Well it might be a way for her to get her nerves under controll. going out there knowing she has to skate perfect to move all the way up might make her even more nervous.

Hey, wait a minute. I just realized I made a mistake in my 6.0 calculations. Joe is right. Under ordinal scoring Alissa wins!
Alissa: 5th + 1st = factored placement 3.5
Emily: 3rd + 2nd = factored placement 3.5
Kimmie: 1st + 3rd = factored placement 3.5
A three-way tie. Tie breaker is LP placement. Alissa wins gold!!!!!

The idea that Emily should have won this thing is hogwash. She and Kimmie/Alissa are not at the same level. Emily is so laboured, and all her elemetns are work-in-process, nothing polished about her. Her spins are slow, spiral position is absolutely ugly.
She is monstrously overmarked. With 5 triples, i doubt she should have beaten Kimmie.

That girl that finished in eight place I though she and Alissa looked alike. I thought Alissa was skating when I first saw her.

Alissa's skating style and ability is top rate - if she gets her jumps consistently I can see her easily blowing away the competition. That girl has CLASS!!

Alissa is the only Senior US lady who currently impresses me. Kimmie is rather blah and the jazz hands are distracting. Emily will be on the bubble because if the two Junior ladies move up they can't skate in seniors for several years. I am still rooting for Bebe to pull off a clean lp.

Right on, iloveaxel. Really, the point I was trying to make is this: Suppose 3 weeks from now there is a team competition featuring the top 6 at these Nationals against the top 6 from Japanese Nationals; You are our coach; the final day of this 3-day competition has arrived, with the Americans having a slight lead; Each coach gets to choose ONE of his 6 ladies to skate the final number. The Japanese skater skates a great performance, and the American team needs a similar or greater performance to win the event. Who is your choice to skate that one final number to nail down the win?
Actually, it's not so obvious. But I would pick Kimmie because I feel that she's the only one with the technial content to match the Japanese and the nerves/fight in her to do a good job. But if one were a real risk-taker and just wanted all or nothing- how about Alyssa
But never mind opinions- it's there in the numbers. Hughes was about a point away from winning, so if she hadn't fallen on that jump, she would be national champ whether you like her or not. Nationally, she's one of the best but I agree, internationally I would say she's second-tier. But that doesn't mean she sucks.

Emily is not a second tier skater. This nationals she looked very in shape and she looks as if she will peak at Worlds. I think that Emily's career is on a trajectory where she could win the National and World titles that her sister had not been able to achieve in her career. It remains to be seen whether Emily could pull off an Olympic win however I think that Emily has many achievements ahead of her.

Sorry, can't agree with you. I've studied French (7 years), Spanish (5 years), Italian (4 years) and Portuguese (2 years). Of the four, Spanish was the easiest, French and Portuguese the most difficult.

I could be wrong about Emily. But I think she has a long way to go to be in contention to winning Worlds or Olympics.
I think a national title is very well within Hughes' reach. However, a world medal (let alone a world championship)...I just don't think she's at that level right now. At this point I think top 6 would be an excellent accomplishment for her.

I actually believe that Alissa is the fan favorite for Worlds. I don't know how many international judges watched US Nats so I have no idea of their opinion of her.
Emily, for me, is limited to this heavy style of skating. Everything is for the elements. I don't know if the TV showed the looks on her face when she goes after a triple jump. It had that summer Olympic look for high jump.
Her music,Sylvia gives her that strong woman like style and it works well. I don't see her doing a Rachmaninoff.

Joe, Dick commented (I think it was Dick anyway) on Emily's preparation into her jumps... I hadn't noticed, but after he said something it was really prominent lol

Toni - Unfortunately, one doesn't hear the Dick/Peggy/Terry comments while attending competitions. (or is it fortunately?
)I'm glad he agrees. I guess you noticed now. She steps out of character and puts full focus on the preparations for her jumps. She actually does this in the Exhibitions, too. Staying in character with the music and performing elements is not easy and only natural skaters can do it. But for competitive purposes, one gets more points for jumps than for performance.

well I think she really wanted the title... like I said I hadn't noticed it before.
and personally - not counting Kurt and Terry - I'd say it's fortunately we don't hear the commentary when we're sitting there (but where Heather and I almost always sat last year and in Portland we got to see the TV monitors lol so we made up things we thought they were [or should] saying)
