Lindsey Vonn for downhill olympic gold?

:dbana:

The speed queen is back! Not only she won, but that was a pretty big margin! Congratulations, Lindsey!

NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Lindsey's crashed!

OK, enough of the replays. It was bad enough hearing her screaming with pain while the medical team was with her, without seeing the crash again up close from multiple angles.

There was always the possibility that this would happen. I know she's a big girl, but these athletes need to be protected from themselves.

The commentator keeps saying, "That's tough to see," but then they keep showing different angles of the crashes.

They were showing so many replays of the second big crash, by Cande MORENO (AND), that it got to the stage that Ed Drake and Charlie Guest on the TNT Sports / Eurosport commentary were protesting that we didn't need to see it.

Have a bit of decency, TV director!

Everone waiting for reports on Lindsey's condition. I'm also wondering how Moreno is doing. It's awkward if noone cares about your accident because you aren't a super star. Or maybe she's just happy to not being in focus. Would be nice though to get info on how she is :)

She’s released a statement that her arm got caught and it had nothing to do with previous injuries.

That's not what I was getting at, though. I wasn't talking about the causes of an accident, I was talking about the potential effects.

What I was saying is that the medical people need to have the authority to over-rule these highly focussed and highly ambitious athletes and stop them from doing something that could potentially make matters worse.

In this case, they weren't able to stop her, she crashed, and she now has more serious injuries on top of what she already had.

Of course, I realise that Lindsey's comeback was all about these Olympics. That she has a great record at Cortina, and because these Olympics were being held there, she wanted to have another go. And after everything she has done in the past few years to prepare for it, she didn't want to give up when she got injured just a week beforehand.

But, you have to put your health and wellbeing first.

I just read the statement you linked to in your subsequent post and, frankly, I find it very irresponsible the way Lindsey is encouraging people to take risks. Instead, she should admit that she was wrong to do what she did, and encourage people to listen to the doctors.

Nevertheless, I still like her, and I wish her all the best in her recovery.

"I hope if you take away anything from my journey it’s that you all have the courage to dare greatly. Life is too short not to take chances on yourself. Because the only failure in life is not trying."

- L. Vonn

I wouldn't want it any other way.

Admittedly, I didn't watch Monday's Men's Team Downhill Combined, but I was very disappointed that the commentators on TNT Sports / Eurosport (Ed Drake and Charlie Guest) didn't give us an update about Cande MORENO (AND) during yesterday's Women's Team Downhill Combined. All the talk was about Lindsey.

However, Cande has posted an update on her Instagram:

Not just one, but two ligaments have been torn in her left knee. And another in her right thumb too.

Knee injuries in general are horrible. So, I really feel for her.

I wish her all the best in her recovery.

You know, it's funny. You are praising the very sentence that I was saying was irresponsible.

I was going to say that it must be the trans-Altantic differences in culture that has led to us seeing the same statement very differently. But then I saw that 9-times motorcycle grand prix world champion Marc Márquez (ESP) had replied to Lindsey's post, and said pretty much exactly the same thing as her!

That said, Marc is probably not a good example of how people this side of the pond think, as he is well known for his risk taking. He frequently does things on track that nobody else would risk doing. And on more than one occasion he has come back from injury too early, and then crashed and made matters an awful lot worse.

Doing that very nearly ended Marc's career a few years ago. But, he fought back, and became World Champion again last season. Although I'm not sure that Lindsey would want to make another comeback to competition, I am sure she will fight back to full fitness too.

Personally, if it was me, I would be inclined to wait until I was fully recovered before attempting to make a comeback.

Maybe I am just too cautious.

I watched today's Women's Super-G LIVE and, without giving away the result, I was delighted with who emerged as the winner. I have liked her for a long time.

Disappointed that another of my favourites was amongst the many non-finishers. Especially after she was not able to take part in the Downhill on Sunday due to not doing a Training Run. (Training Run 1 was cancelled due to bad weather; she opted not to do Training Run 2; and Training Run 3 was abandoned due to fog before they got as far as her).

But, I want to give a shout-out to the oldest competitor, 46 year old Sarah Schleper (MEX). They showed her warming up at one stage in between skiers doing their runs, and as she was working away, she was singing "In the Air Tonight" by Phil Collins! Specifically this line:

"I've been waiting for this moment all my life. Oh Lord".

Whereas Donovan Carillo was Mexico's flagbearer in Milan during the Opening Ceremony, Sarah was Mexico's flagbearer in Cortina. Here is what I wrote in the thread when they showed her carrying the flag:

Wow! Everybody is talking about Lindsey Vonn (USA) skiing here at the age of 41, but Sarah Schleper (MEX) is also skiing at the age of 46. (Turns 47 before the Games end).

Catherine says at her last World Cup race, Sarah skied in a swimsuit carrying her son.

She's game!

I take it the Olympics is her swansong then.

What I hadn't realised at the time but was explained in the commentary today was that the incident Catherine was talking about wasn't recent. It was from Sarah's initial retirement back in 2011. And that her son is now 18, and is actually competing in these Olympics! Lasse Gaxiola (MEX) will be making his Olympic debut in the Men's Slalom on Monday.

They will be the first mother and son to compete at the same Winter Olympics.

  :points:

That will be an amazing achievement for both of them.

:cheer: ALL THE BEST!!! :cheer:
