American Idol 4/24-4/25 -- and beyond??

But the thing is, this isn't a singing contest, it's a "teen idol" contest. They are looking for the next Britney Spears or Justin Timberlake, not the next Caruso.

Melinda was the best singer, but she was too old (in singing style as well as age).

Blake making funny, squeeking noises with his mouth -- hey, there you go! :)

Hit the nail right on the head. Couldn't have taken a better shot IMHO

One of my favorites, Reuban, is singing with Jordin. I love his singing. Tony Bennet, what a class act. Gladys Knight can still belt out a good song.

They just announced the winner.

Worst season of Idol EVER. Geh. That describes it best.

EDIT: They need more singing by the actual contestants of the season in the finale next year...

And The Winner Is.....

Big surprise - Jordin Sparks!!! It took them two hours to announce what everyone - including the judges already knew? What a snooze fest the whole production was - except for a few seasoned veterans - like Gladys Knight and Tony Bennett the rest could pretty much have gone home. The rest of the Idol gang murdered those Beatles tunes. And while I am on my "soap box" what is the big deal about Carrie Underwood? I just don't "dig" her voice.

I still think the wrong candidate won - it should have been Melinda (got her name right this time!). She sounded great with Gladys. At least she and Lakisha sang on key with Gladys and sang with conviction.

Oh well now I can watch Canadian Idol. It's not all glitz and glamour like it's American counterpart, but it's great singing as well as entertaining.

ITA. But now I know better than to assume that the best singer will win American Idol. It doesn't happen that way. The best singer gets very far (assuming no meltdowns in Hollywood), but never wins. Rather, the person with the most fans, with a decent voice, seems to be the one who ends up winning. Anyway, Jordin IS very good and a worthy AI. Not the right one IMO but there you have it.

Lad, I really enjoyed most of the entertainment on the show. Of course I went into it know that the last few minutes would be the announcement and I don't think it was a snooze fest at all.

I agree Melinda and Lakisha did an excellent job with Gladys.

Poor Bette Midler, not quite sure what happened to her song. Can you image Randy saying..........Yo Yo Dawg, check it out.......that just didn't work for me tonight!!!

I'm glad Jordin won......would've liked Melinda to win. I couldn't believe that Blake couldn't do a simple harmony with Jordin at the beginning of the show.

It was a bit more low key than past finales... but far from a snooze

*hopefully* Canadian Idol won't be as disappointing for you Lad.

Oh, my gosh, I felt so badly for her! When I was teaching voice in college, I used to use her as my prime example of a person with a very limited vocal range but great performance abilities, which was why she was so successful. But last night, she had NO vocal range whatsoever and terrible performance abilities. I was shocked. Didn't they say something about her taking over for Celine Dion in Las Vegas soon? Yikes! That performance would NOT induce me to buy a ticket to that show.

I missed the first hour but what I saw was far from a snoozathon, I really enjoyed it (poor Bette aside). I loved Taylor Hicks. Oh, yeah, but that whole Beatles thing was awful. They picked the worst songs, and no one could stay on key (especially Carrie Underwood).

Ah, well, there is always next year!

I'm interested in seeing that American Idol Band show. I wonder when that will air.

Aw yeah, Taylor looked good. He sounded a little like Ray Charles, when he sang "The News". He's lost a lot of weight this year. rawr lol

Sorry for weighing in late (in this case WAY WAY WAY late) again, let's just say that for me **** has hit about 15 fans in the last couple of weeks and I've been spending most of my time putting out (not literal) fires and running interference and doing damage controls.

ANYHOO --

A few random observations:

I really think that what did Melinda in was TOO MANY COMPLIMENTS. She never got one critique from ANY of the judges that was anything negative; a few nit-picky things from Simon and occasionally Randy now and then, but nothing along the line of some of the comments Jordin and Blake got on occasion, on their off nights. On a certain subliminal level, I think it led a lot of people to believe that she was home safe; I think she had a few off nights leading to comments along the line of "That sounded like a group of Siamese cats caterwauling on a fence" or "Simply ghastly" would have maybe woken more people up to keep her in because hey, maybe she's not safe after all. (Which she obviously was not). Tho I will agree that Melinda, like LaToya London in Season Three, may have been a bit too "adult contemporary" for the average AI voter.

re. Blake: I do think he really kicked his game up a notch on the final night, but there was just no way he was going to be able to carry off that winning ballad. (Which, I must say, was a DEFINITE improvement over the usual sappy crap that they usually write for the winner; those guys have a future.) I even enjoyed "You Give Love A Bad Name" much more this time around, because I just approached it from a different angle. And his beatboxing can certainly lead to lower costs in getting his album produced -- after all, it usually takes a couple of guys in a sound booth to make THOSE kind of noises, Blake can do it all by himself....

I could not BELIVE Ryan on the last night when he introduced those two guys who won the songwriting contest. Here it is, these two have a brief moment in the spotlight (and a well deserved one, because they wrote a pretty good song for a couple of non-professionals) and RYAN TELLS THE ONE GUY TO SIT BACK DOWN OUT OF CAMERA RANGE BECAUSE HE WAS TOO TALL AND MADE RYAN FEEL SHORT??????? What a jackass!! This, on top of some of the interplay between him and Simon this season that took the focus off the contestants after their song (and for some reason, poor Melinda usually seemed to be the one to attract this type of thing more than the rest), is just too much.

Next season, I hope they look into having more about the CONTESTANTS during the results show if they're gonna make it an hour long. I am sick to death of them using the hour to plug various other Fox projects; make it more about the contestants, people!! Crap, the "commercials" take so much time the one going home barely has a chance to get their final song in!! However, they can keep the Ford commercials; those are always cute.

Last, CONGRATS TO JORDIN!!:clap::clap::clap: I really think she's terrific and has a great future; I had a feeling early on in the competition that she was going to be the one that got better and better every week and was going to end up being the Final 3 Surprise, but I never would have projected her the winner, at least not until Melinda went out. Good job!!
