Anna Pogorilaya

No "Rise Like a Phoenix" skate? It's one of the best exhibition skates with the total costume change mid-program. But after that spectacle yesterday, maybe it's for the best she take a little time off and regroup. Who wouldn't be concerned after seeing that?

But she did want to partecipate though. I think the decision whether to go or not should be hers.
Very bad decision this one, to single her out. :disapp:

It makes me cheer for Anna even more to medal at Russian Nationals.

I have a suspicion that even if she medals they won't send her to Euros or Worlds. Tuktamysheva is on a roll and has an influential coach. Elena seems equally strong and is just very consistent. If Sotnikova returns there is no way they'll leave her home, she is the Olympic reigning champion. Julia has the darling-Julia bonus, even if she has a disaster skate like in her GP event or the finals. Even the spanish organizers chose her over Anna, and the Russians do love Julia even more fiercely. I hate that Anna probably has to win Nationals to get to Worlds. And I don't see it happening. :(

Sad for Anna. She may not have the reputation of Julia but she overscored her here. Agree that they could invite Julia too, not replacing Anna. So sad and disappointed for this :disapp:

I hope Anna will work hard and perform two clean skates at Russian Nationals as an answer.

I can't believe they left Anna out of the gala. Her Rise Like a Phoenix is a phenomenal EX, and she is the deserving fourth-place finisher. They should've just let both girls skate.

Well, Adelina was the Olympic champion last year, and was healthy enough and willing to go to Worlds...they still sent Anna instead. I believe she still has a chance if she does decent in Nationals.

They will send Anna to Worlds/Euros if she finishes above Yulia at Nationals. I don't think that is a problem.

The organizers of the Barcelona Gala however, were extremely disrespectful. That was just plain wrong.

My gut is telling me that no matter how Russian Nats shake out we will see Anna and Yulia both battle it out at Euros for a WC spot. If Adelina comes back in time she will get the third spot to Euros and also battle it out for a WC spot. If Adelina doesn't skate then I see Liza going to Euros. In any event Liza and Elena can probably pack their bags for Shanghai.

The Irony is that Yulia and Anna got the third spot that Russia hadn't attained in some time. I really hope one of them get a chance to return. A lot depends on Adelina.

Liza has never won gold at Euros and Elena has never even skated at Euros... these are not opportunities that they'll want to miss. The competition isn't going to be steep this year but the title is still prestigious.

This is a title Yulia has already won(which was her best performance ever IMO)... which is why I think that if things stay about the same after Nationals that Pogorilaya should go to Euros and Yulia should should skate at a 2-3 low pressure B events to see if she can pull it together.

I don't disagree necessarily and that's why I was just saying its a gut feeling. The way I see it....Elena will have many more Euros in her future. She's shown a bit of a chink to her armor but nothing major and she is still riding high. A bad skate might actually hurt her there so why not let her train instead? Especially if she has a good showing at Nats.

I also think the fed doesn't care about anything more than having three viable chances to sweep the WC podium. There are already news stories in Russia about it being a shame GPF wasn't a sweep. So to me, getting Yulia or Anna ready to be a real threat will be more important than individual medals at this point.

It's just my gut. It's one of many possibilities.

Thank god Yulia and Anma secured that 3rd spot.

She posted a lot of photos on Instagram from the party last night for the skaters, and she is smiling in them, so that's good. :)

I agree that it was the most convincing one in terms of costume change. And IMO, it was the best exhibition of this year. But she said she had a new exhibition (I wonder, why?) and that she was excited to show it at gala. That was really rude to select Yuliya over her, when Anna placed higher. For me, Yuliya's exhibitions are never fun to watch, because she is too introverted.

There was such a long interval break. They could have had both girls skate. I don't know what the organizers were thinking.

Anyway, maybe this is the motivation she needs to bounce back.

I hope Anna does well at Nationals! The step sequence is my favorite element, and I think she has the best step sequences of all the senior ladies at Russian Nationals. I do not understand why people are criticizing her basic skating. Maybe the knee action is not so smooth, but the edge quality is very good :).

And she has the best speed among them, according to people who have seen her live. I hope she will do well.
