Anna Pogorilaya

Hi. I am not very good at human anatomy, but from what I read here and according to how well I've understood what her back problem is; she does not need an operation, nor does she need to go abroad.
Plus, Russia has some very well prepared doctors and physicians. Therefore, what is the point of going to another country, away from her family, away from her daily activities, away from russian speakers, to do the same treatment which could have been done in Moscow but (maybe) twice as expensive just because the Russian Skating Federation will pay for it?

Operations are usually a last-resort option for back problems, however, even without surgery such injuries are very complicated. I have been dealing with a back problem since I was 15 (I'm 21) and no doctor has been able to resolve my issue fully, in large part because where I live there is a dearth of really good practitioners. External medicine can help alleviate back problems, but it must be done by excellent medical professionals. As the fed itself said it would pay for Anya to go abroad, I can only imagine the best external medicine practitioners for spinal health are not in Russia. And trust me, with a back injury, you want the best you can possibly get.

Sorry to hear about the problems you have been having with your own back. I hope that at some stage somebody will come along and work out exactly what is wrong with it and how to treat it. Because 6 years is a long time to be suffering.

It is awful when your health and wellbeing comes down to a postcode lottery.

But, getting back to our Anna, you make a very good point. If the Fed is offering to pay for treatment abroad, it shows that they believe that you have to go abroad to get the best treatment. Let's face it, they would not be making the offer if they thought Anna could get the treatment she needs within Russia. Because it would be cheaper for them to pay for treatment within Russia, and no organisation wants to pay more than they have to.

So this in itself is encouraging, as it shows that the Fed does care about Anna, and wants her to get back to full fitness.

Just a pity her coach doesn't feel the same...

I worked out with Santey that we could maybe put together a video for Anya stating our support, that her VK group could then send to her. If anyone is interested in this, please PM me. Other forms of support are also welcome, such as art and letters! I'll start working on it once my exams are over next week.

I really admire everybody's efforts to let Anna know that we care about her, and are thinking about her. You can count me in!

I am waiting for the day that Anna emulates the words of the song that she performed her most famous Gala programme to:

Waking in the rubble
Walking over glass
Neighbors say we're trouble
Well that time has passed

Peering from the mirror
No, that isn't me
Stranger getting nearer
Who can this person be

You wouldn't know me at all today from the fading light I fly

Rise like a phoenix
Out of the ashes seeking rather than vengeance
Retribution you were warned
Once I'm transformed
Once I'm reborn
You know I will rise like a phoenix
But you're my flame

Go about your business
Act as if you're free
No one could have witnessed
What you did to me

'Cause you wouldn't know me today
And you have got to see
To believe
From the fading light I fly

Rise like a phoenix
Out of the ashes seeking rather than vengeance
Retributionyou were warned
Once I'm transformed
Once I'm reborn

I rise up to the sky
You threw me down but
I'm gonna fly

And rise like a phoenix
Out of the ashes seeking rather than vengeance
Retribution you were warned
Once I'm transformed
Once I'm reborn
You know I will rise like a phoenix
But you're my flame

Reading the lyrics, they are so appropriate for giving encouragement to somebody in the situation Anna is currently in. So, I hope she does look back at them, and gets inspiration from them.

And that is before we even get to the inspiration she can get from watching the stunning routine she did to that song:

Anna was absolutely amazing during that routine. And we know she can be absolutely amazing again if she gets the proper treatment that she deserves.

The suspense ended...
So sad to see how Anna struggled, fought back, and had to say goodbye to her Olympic dream in such a painful way. Let's wish that the skating god would give us back a healthy Anna in the future! And it would be truly a blessing to see her skate again! Get well soon Anna! Always love you and support you!:ghug:

Thank you everyone for caring and cheering for Anna in this amazing fan fest too! As true fans of Anna, we will also support each other to get through this difficult time:ghug:. At least now we can relax and enjoy the Russian Nationals and the Olympics without being so worried about Anna!

:(

thank YOU, jiawen2016 for supporting Anna and being for her at Skate Canada earlier this year:ghug:, I think it is important now for her to feel the love and warmth of people around, that this is not a situation she should be blamed about.

I personally have no expectations - I think that expectations and too forceful approach to them applied by Anna to herself and people around her adding too much pressure on her were part of the situation we are now facing. My only hope is to see Anna healthy and happy in what she'd pursue in life. It would be of course magnificent to see her again on ice in competition, but it has to be take out of her will and desire, not from others' push. Get well Anna and Your happiness will make us happy! Thank You all Anna's fans here too!:)

Not at all surprised by the news, but sad. She wouldn‘t have been sent to the Olympics, so I hope she can heal.

Wishing her well and hope so much it is not the end of her competitive career and that we'll see a magnificent comeback next year...
What a cursed season it has been so far!

Anna is young and I believe her back will heal. She will return next season
stronger and healthy and we can enjoy her lovely skating again. My best to Anna and to her recovery.

Adian's back didn't heal and he is young. :( Of course, I don't know the nature of Anna's injury and I certainly hope things will turn out better for her.

If she does come back, I pray it will be with a different coach.

I'm absolutely gutted for her, this injury, especially in Olympic season. I'm so glad that she's facing this positively, and isn't just fast forwarding to retirement. She could be a champion one day. I hope she heals well and comes back fighting. #1 Russian in my heart without a doubt.

Extremely sad to hear about Anna's season being over :( I hope that she will recover fully and come back stronger than ever!

Mine, too. It's so heartbreaking. Since 2013/2014 Season she's been such a shining star. She wasn't able to go to Sochi. (which she could've won, to be honest) And now she won't be able to go to PC. She'll be 23 at the next Olympics. And looking at Russia's depth in the Ladies... it's so frustrating to have that happen to my favourite Ladies skater. One year ago I thought she might be able to win Gold. I'm still sad and shocked. :(

Given what back injuries are like, I think we all knew that Anna would not be competing again this season. But, it is still sad to hear it being confirmed.

I wish her all the best for her recovery.

Don't forget that Anna has a trump card that the other Russian girls don't have:

Ukrainian parents

If competing at the Olympics is something she had her heart set on, there is plenty of time for Anna to explore that route between now and 2022.

But, now is not the time to worry about that. The most important thing right now is for Anna to get fully recovered.

Oh yes she does have another option. I forgot about her background.

At least she can do a surgery if needed without worrying of missing competition anymore. I'll miss her but sometimes it's better to take a break and heal completely. I'd hate to see her hurt all the time.

Like everyone here I'm sorry she won't be competing again this season - somehow I was hoping against hope that she would get better. However, I'm even more relieved that this shows that they are at last taking her injury seriously. The "Nothing's wrong, nothing to see here, moving along"-approach that seemed to come through after Skate Canada genuinely worried me. I hope she will get the treatment she needs now, and whether she will be able to return or no - I do hope she will - at least her problem is no longer being ignored. I will miss her, though.

Wishing Anna health & happiness.

I will miss Anna at Olys. Wish her well and speedy recovery.

Also, as i am very selfiss and i want to see her in future a lot at international competitions, i hope that she will take the Ukrainian citizenship.

That's the problem with a big depth in a country. The skaters haven't time to grow up, to try to change their style, to have a bad year. They have to deliver, deliver, deliver. I think what would have come of Lambiel or Koster if they wouldn't had the time to develop themselves through their ups and downs in the awesome skaters they are now.

In this case she will have to leave Russia and change coach for someone working outside it (in North America for ex) which is much more expensive.

I'm heartbroken for Anna that this happened at all, let alone this season. She is my absolute favorite skater in Ladies. When I saw her live at Boston 2016, it instantly became my wish for her to medal in Pyeongchang. I wish her all the best for a complete recovery and to come back better than ever.
