Anna Shcherbakova

She has accomplished so much, under extremely difficult circumstances, yet always held her head up and never caused public drama or trouble for others - only the contrary.
Never, not in the four years that I've been following Russian ladies' skating, and she has done this at a rink that has been a complete soap opera the entire time. I am amazed at how well she stays out of the drama; she is an absolute class act 100% of the time. I'm a grown man, and I don't watch what I say as closely as she does at 18, which leads me to...

Happy Birthday, Anna! I hope you have a wonderful year! :hb:

Anna's long play yesterday was a bit simplified compared to what she showed at the Olympics. But even such a program would be enough to win the World Figure Skating Championships.

I don't know what will happen next season. While I hope to see her "live" in the ice show in April. And even if this season was the last, and we will no longer see her new programs in September, I am eternally grateful to her. Anna would forever go down in the history of figure skating even if she left the sport immediately after winning the 2021 Russian Championships. But she did much more, and it's not about medals and titles.

I hope Anna will have a happy life and, having matured, she herself will remain as beautiful inside and outside as she is today, when any shortest video with her immediately makes me smile.

Wow it's only just now hitting me that our beloved Anya is 18. How time flies.
Doesn't it.. it seems just yesterday when we were worrying if she's going to get a JGP spot.. well she did and she won.. how she did many times since then... and as Alex said, even if this season was the last, which I certainly hope it wasn't, I think she's already way passed everyone's expectations about what she can possibly achieve in her carrier... especially considering what kind of skaters she has to compete against.. :thank:

It’s no surprise that the leadership in her camp don’t need to go to the press to air any grievances. If they did, it’s probably to complain that she‘s too good to be true. Haha

I said this a billion times: Anna is my prototype of a sportsperson. Drama free, hard working, quietly confident, a fighter, one who never quits, one who leaves everything out there, always fit and in shape to compete, classy, poised, (and since this is results based business after all), super clutch, the consummate winner, a champion, a legend, and a GOAT contender.

Sports would be a million times better if there were just male and female versions of Anna in them. I truly believe this.

Wait, why are people saying this season might be her last? Am I missing something? Even if she preforms only domestically next season, it doesn't mean she should retire. And my hope is that even if the GP events are lost to her, there's still a chance to return for worlds?

Huh 50? I know you have disdain for the coaching team at Sambo 70 but a "complete soap opera the entire time"? Tallk about an exaggeration. I guarantee you Anna does not feel that way.

Anna and all the great skaters at TT who have done nothing but win with class the last 10 years and actually carry struggling Russian sports in the process. Ladies figure skating has carried Russian sports. :) They don't seek fame they aren't seeking the spotlight all they do is work. The coaches too. They are not perfect as a team by any means but I guarantee you they work the hardest.

Yes happy birthday to Anya. I hope she has a wonderful year too with chances to compete in a full season. I hope she competes for several more years if that's what she wants. It's possible she's just hitting her peak. :)

It's perplexing that people are saying that. It is possible Anna will only compete domestically next season. Important issues are still up in the air but maybe next season won't be decided until like August. There is time for the ISU to figure things out. Hopefully things will get better that would help a lot.

I think Anna will skate competitively into her twenties. Hopefully she will prove without a shadow of a doubt that she is one of the all time great ladies figure skaters. She has everything it takes physically and mentally to do that now she just needs more opportunities at world championships European championships add another Olympics hopefully.

All of this, but she is also the ultimate professional in defeat. Maybe sad or mad at herself, not at others.

At the Channel 1 Cup she gave a non-committal answer about continuing but (if Google Translate is correct) did allude that the 'mess' of ISU situation with the ban on Russian athletes.... Its not just a matter of will they skate next year but if they are allowed what does this past season mean, technically by the rules Russia would only be able to send 1 athlete in each discipline to Worlds next year based on the non-participation of Worlds this year unless the ISU makes an exception (which unfortunately I think is slim).

Olympic champion, world champion in figure skating Anna Shcherbakova answered the question about continuing her sports career.

“At the moment I want to rest, until not only I have a general feeling of confusion. It is not clear what awaits us, I will look at the situation.

For now, I want to take a break from the season, even though it was with bright moments, and then I will look at the next season, ”said Shcherbakova.

“This will directly affect my decision,” the skater added, answering the question of what she would do if the “mess” continued.

Earlier, the International Skating Union (ISU) suspended Russian skaters from international competitions.
