Another pair splits, Valérie Marcoux retires

She, along with other Japanese skaters will not be able to carry duel citizenship. Japan wont allow it. That Russian team will not make the Olys even if they win Worlds.

Joe

Olys is not everything, they can still compete at worlds etc. I'm sure if they really have a realistic shot at Olys medal and if they really want it badly, Ota and Craig can work things out.

They were at times, my pic for gold, but unfortunately, the judges get caught up in the glitter of the flavor of the month. I will miss them.

This makes Katy Taylor in more demand than ever. But I don't think she'll risk it.

Joe

Aside from Katy's size, why would she switch? Does she have an interest in pairs? I'm not a fan of Katy...she reminds me way to much of Lipinski. When she puts together a good program, its nice but she rarely can put it together. I think she's a flash in the pan. Perhaps this is why people think she might be good at pairs? thoughts, comments ect?

NO. Contrary to the common belief, a tiny and compact body is not suitable for pairs skating. Katy does not have the body line for pairs skating. Pairs skating is more difficult than most people tend to give credit to. That's why you only see a handful of teams hovering around at international scenes for ages in contrast to change of hands every year in singles.

I don't remember any pair has ever medaled at world championships as retired single skaters. I&B were close, but there's a big gap between them and the top three pairs in the world at any time.

Here is an article that gives more insight into why Craig and Val split. I think they've handled themselves well.

They're both in their mid-twenties, and they have different goals. Val is ready to move on with her life, and Craig still wants to continue skating. If they were still together off the ice, things may be different. I hope that Val finds happiness coaching in Ohio, and that Craig finds a partner who is suitable match. I wish them both all the best.

That's exactly why I think she should switch to Pairs and skate with Craig. She's not going to get a better partner.

Petrova didn't have any long stems in the line department but she was compact and a good skater, even won a Worlds.

It is, imo, the most difficult discipline in figure skating. The requirements are much more demanding than Singles.

Why will Craig take on a hopeless partner who's only interested in pink hummer? It's not like she is in great demand.

Maxim Marinin is a former singles skater. I am sure there are more of them out there.

I am not surprised about this breakup. As others stated, you could tell they are on the road to splitsville at the Worlds.

Best of luck to Craig, and Val.

Hope he finds another partner. And soon. It would be a shame not to see his pretty mug on the ice next season.

Yes, Yukina is her name. She is just magnificent but will go nowhere in singles.
I predict she'll become an instant hit if finding a good partner in Canada or U.S.
Craig, time for you to pick up the phone!! Can somebody let Yukina know a hottie is available in Canada???

Ahmad Billings??? No, please. No current Canadian female skater matches Craig's talent. He is fairly young as a male partner. The German pair is a great example how things can change overnight with a perfect fit.

Uh..have you seen Amanda skate?? IMO she's a tremendously talented skater who has everything but the jumps. Beautiful lines and posture, GREAT musicality and such wonderful use of arms. And besies she just looks lovely on the ice. Definitely one of my very favourite skaters. Though I won't mind seeing Yukina team up with Craig. Something needs to be done for these sublimely talented skaters who just cannot jump!

They really looked crestfallen after their long program at this year's Worlds so no big surprise here. I think they did their best. It is always hard for pairs and ice dancers to maintain relationships on and off ice. Perhaps this is what did them in as skating partners. I wish Val the best as a coach and hope that Craig will find another partner to continue.

Whom should Craig be parterning with?

How about Anabelle LANGLOIS ? They have the potential to become an instant hit on the international scene.

Or finding him a Japanese singles skater. How about that former Jr. worlds champion , Yuko(?? sorry for my bad memory). She's a lovely skater, but will go nowhere in singles as i'm doubtful her difficult jumps will ever come back due to injuries.

You are thinking of Jean-Sébastien Fecteau and Utako Wakamatsu. Although Utako is a very flexible skater and a very good skater; she does not want to become a Canadian citizen so therefore could not represent Canada in the upcoming 2010 Olympics. I am sure Craig would want to aim for the Olympics.

Anabelle Langlois is already successfully partnered with Cody Hay. I am sure Skate Canada will find a new partner for Craig.

I really hope Craig can find a good partner. I've always thought he was a great skater. He has a nice, clean line to his skating and a classy look on the ice (reminiscent of Sergei Grinkov). I think he has more musicality and artistic ability than a lot of male pairs skaters.

I don't know if I really see him with Anabelle Langlois. She has a lot of charisma on the ice, but has a different kind of style than Craig. Plus, she's so inconsistent with her jumps. And after skating with Valerie, who was pretty strong with jumps, that could be frustrating for him.

I'd rather see Craig paired with someone a little more elegant and classical in style. Yukina Ota would be great if she were available and interested!

I have only seen Anabelle's performances over the past two years, and found she and Cody are relatively consistent, especially for the last two competitions - Nationals and Worlds. Anabelle's triple jumps have good height and spring, and the unison with Cody is pretty amazing. Judged by those performances, I would say they are more consistent than M&B and D&D who have not done any back-to-back clean programs for a long time.

Yukina Ota is a great choice. She has consistent 3T, 3S which should be more than enough for pairs skater, but not singles.

I think that Craig Buntin should pair up with Anabelle Lenglois (SP?) as well, but yeah I doubt that she'll just dump cody on the sidewalk like that. Despite Anabelle's great skating she's never been the Canadian Champion and I think that if she pairs up with Craig Buntin she could be the Canadian Champion.
