[Article] Hughes juggles school and skating

Really? She seems very charming in interviews to me - full of pep and humor, and very comfortable being interviewed.

Hmm, I dunno...just her body language...girls I knew who were stuck up had the same type of or similar body language (and therefore gave off the same vibe) as she does in interviews and now some of the sound bytes from newspapers. Not to say that she is or isn't "snobbish", but just that I'm beginning to get hints of it...and the demeanor she carries is beginning to get to me a little (again, likely because of the association I mentioned above). But it's not only me- apparently some folks saw her exhibiting "diva behavior" during practices (don't know how credible they are though).

Meanwhile, Emily is E-mailing her high school work back to teachers at Great Neck North. She is taking three Advanced Placement courses in economics, English and calculus.

Economics is her favorite class. But after watching reporters chase her around Turin last winter, she thought that might be fun, too, and is leaning early toward journalism as a major.

From an article before Nats in the NY Daily News (paragon of journalism ;) ). Don't think we need to worry about Em at Harvard.

Emilie replaced Kwan and that brought about fluff for weeks and it hasn't stopped. You didn't notice? The camera catches her father at Nationals as well.

I've never met Emily, so I don't have any idea what her non-skating life personality is like. I do know, however, that all the Hughes children seem to have an abundance of self-esteem and confidence. Sometimes I think that can come across as being conceited or snobbish.
I didn't appreciate though, that comment she made about being different than the other skaters regarding education. She may be a wonderful student, but she has also had the benefit of being from a very financially secure family, and hasn't had the worries that many kids have trying to afford a college education.
And she also has had the good fortune of timing. There isn't the depth right now in U.S. ladies skating, and she has taken good advantage of that. Plus ... her last name is Hughes ... and that helps!

I can't say anything about diva behavior, but it's disappointing that she has followed in Sarah's footsteps in the snobbishness factor. I've seen plenty of unremarkable Ivy League grads to know that the school doesn't make the person.

Other than that I still think Emily is a great skater.

Value judgments like whether someone is "snobbish" are often tainted by our own perceptions of what it means to be a "snob" which in turn can be coloured by our own upbringing and current social factors. I would seriously mistrust anyone's opinion on something like this where the person making the statement doesn't know the person they're commenting on personally, or without knowing personally the person making the statement.

Soory, ant, but when Emily made a point in an interview that she is 'different' from other skaters because she combines education and figure skating, that struck a nerve. Emily is a high school student just like Kimmie Meissner, who still attends school daily despite being US and World Champion. Alissa Czisny is in college, takes a full course load, and is on the Dean's list.

Somehow, I don't think Emily's words endeared her to her peers at US National.

Well, I saw the same TV interview and Emily's reference to balancing her own education with skating didn't come across to me as being snobbish or condescending toward her peers. Point taken, antmanb. :)

I think she's a typical kid albeit a well off kid. Nothing wrong about that.

I don't see where one would think Harvard will go overboard to accept her. Nor any of the other Ivy League Universities mentioned. Her best bet would be a non-Ivy League school like NYU, which is very expensive, but closer to home.

What irked me was she made a point of saying she was DIFFERENT from other skaters with respect to education and figure skating. If I had been one of the 'other skaters' I would have been pi**ed.

I hope she determines what she really wants to do unlike her sister who spent alot of the last 5 years with her foot in all these different doors, limiting her success in any one. There is nothing wrong with value in your life, but hopefuly she determines if she really wants to try and do both college and skating like Kwan did, commit to just college, or if the time comes commit to just pro skating and touring.

Hughes juggles school and skating

The thing that irks me are posters who think they know these skaters personally. Suddenly Emily Hughes has become a "snob" as a result of something she may or may have not said in an interview (depending entirely upon whether she was accurately quoted).

How sad is this?

i don't see what she means by "i'm not like other skaters, i balance skating and eductaion." Alissa Cziny is a straight A full time college student, Rachel Flatt is alos a high school freshman straight A student. There are lot sof girls at my rink who flee at 7:30 to get to school by 8. Shizuka arakawa already has her college degree and michelle kwan went straight to college after skating. I think a lot of skaters take eduation seriously.

It was a filmed interview that was shown during US Nationals this year. They showed it before the SP and again before the FS. Emily said "I am different from other skaters. I balance education and figure skating". She went on to talk about the value of a college education and her future.

At the time, I was shocked and totally taken aback by what she said, because it came across that she was better in some way than other skaters because she so valued education. Considering that several other skaters are already in college (Alissa, BeBe, Davis and White) or are planning to go to college (Meissner, Evan Bates) that was a singularly insensitive thing to say.

When Sarah Hughes was just a Junior in high school, she was talking about studying to get a perfect score on the College Borads. She never said whether she actually accomplished it (although I doubt it, because if she had I'm sure we would have heard about it). So it seems the Hughes girls can never be accused of hiding their lights under a bushel.

Matt Savoie graduated magna cum laude from college and went on to get a Masters degree in urban planning, but you never heard him talk about it in interviews. He didn't boast about his acceptance to Cornell Law School, either. We found out about Matt's accomplishments from the TV commentators, not from Matt. Alissa has a 4.0 GPA but you don't hear her talking about it. Again, we heard it from the commentators.

It's not just one thing she said or one mention in an article. It's an accumulation of what seems to be "that type" of behavior/vibe coming from her. Again, I'm not saying she IS or IS NOT a "snob". Just that some of the things she's said/done have been a little "iffy" imo.

Oh let it go already... I seem to remember a poll about the pros & cons of a combo of school & skating and many posters indicated that there are a lot of home schooled skaters... maybe those were the skaters Emily was referring - hmmm??? Give the girl a break.

Some posters sound like those kids in high school who'd sit in the back of the cafeteria and wish the plague on those kids they deemed unworthy to breath because they were smart, rich, popular, good looking, whatever was your high school's version of poison and justified it by giving the label of "snobs." It was stupid. And you know what, its still stupid. When will people learn that? Oh well...

Good luck to Emily. I'm sure whatever school she attends will be lucky to have her...
