Bay Area fitter - Avanta or ProSwizzles?

Hi! I got some great advice from this forum when asking about boot fit issues. I’ve decided to try going to a different fitter in my area to consider specifically Risport and Edeas.

If you are in Northern California / Bay Area and have and first or second hand stories to share about Avanta or ProSwizzles, I’d love to hear.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Avanta, but overall positive. I’ve heard very little about ProSwizzles but know they specialize in Risport and Edea.

If it must be one of those two: ProSwizzles. Stay far away from Avanta.

Avanta does have some positive reviews but it also has some horror stories. But does it have to be one of those two? We could recommend a very reputable fitter near the Bay Area if you’re willing to switch.

I don't know many California skaters who've moved on to or visited my Canadian club. I only know one who told us he went to Avanta and had a poor fitting experience there. He tried two others who were better, but I only remember ProSwizzles because it was a name that stuck in the mind. He ended up buying from a third shop, though, but I can't recall the name, sorry. I'd suggest you let other American skaters here recommend shops and visit any within travelling distance of wherever you live.

Risport and Edea are common enough brands that most shops will carry them. Personally, I'd avoid places that specialize in just one or two brands. They're more likely to push you into a boot that isn't the best for your feet.

I'd happily take another recommendation if you have one! I got my last skates from A&G and while they were pleasant to work with, I ended up having a lot of fit issues, and I'd like to try somewhere else to see if it's better.

First off, Edea wasn't a suggestion for your foot, Risport RF line and Graf were b/c they would be better fits for your foot shape and needs. I don't want to see you wasting your time on boots that probably aren't right for you again.

Just stumbled upon this post and thought I'd give my two cents!

ProSwizzles is imo one of the best shops in the area. I've purchased three pairs of boots from them (3 pairs of Edeas and actually 1 pair of Risports, so I guess that's 4 pairs ) and only go there for sharpenings/equipment needs. Before that I went down to LA

Would recommend at least giving them a try!

I don't know what you wound up doing @bagelonice , but my experience is that going to Avanta to get fitted for a non-Avanta boot did not work out for me at all.

I just spent four hours at Proswizzles the other day - they were very busy but while juggling the swarm of clients, they made adjustments on my new boots until they were completely comfortable and did not let me leave until then. They still skate and try out all their boots so they understand how everything feels!
The shop manager at the Yerba Buena rink can also order custom skates and is very thorough and knowledgeable as she is also still skating.

I'm popping back in almost a year later to say that I ultimately purchasing through Avanta and have only had positive experiences with them so far. I know their reviews on this forum specifically are quite mixed, but wanted to add a positive note based on my personal experiences. Many of the adult skaters at Yerba Buena also trust and prefer Avanta. Take it or leave it for future visitors of this thread!

Just curious. Did you end up purchasing an Avanta boot or one of the non-Avanta boots that you were initially considering?
