Can't believe I'm actually delurking on here, this place scares me, but I've come for some Boyang love
Anyway, witnessing the free skate in the arena was scary and I knew it was gonna be bad the moment he started preparing for the Lutz. But wow, -9 deduction, you don't see that every day... Well I'm not too bummed about it anymore, I'm confident he's gonna show everyone what he's capable of next season. The thing I'm still most salty about is the SP score, how dare they, and without even ashamed of being so obvious, because they know no one's gonna do anything about it... Fighting, Amajin Boyangman, get some awesome programs for next season!!!
About scores, Boyang needs to be more clean, more consistent than all the others, because the judges won't give him reputation points easily. That's the harsh reality. He must deliver. Can't believe I'm actually delurking on here, this place scares me, but I've come for some Boyang love

Welcome, MajaHled! There is a small group of Boyang loving fans here. Were you in the arena watching the skate 'live'?
I am starting to wonder whether there are other 'things' affecting these skaters, putting pressure on them. I was also shocked to see the 2 Russian ladies - Alina/Stanislav with 4 point deductions, especially Alina (she is consistent as). Boyang too, is a consistent skater. Boyang's FS marks tells me that he skates worse than the 3rd tier skaters, which is absolute BS. I just sense there is something else at 'play' here and it is not a reflection of the skater's true skating abilities. Sorry, this is just my deduction.
Hi guys something's bothering me this World Championship so I want to ask here to see if I'm imagining things.
I've never seen him in person, but to me he seems thinner by a considerable amount during the WC, in comparison to how he looked a month ago at Pyeongchang. Does anybody else feels this way?

I think regaining perfect control of his jumps and getting them away from those blasted boards should be high priority for him in the off season. Not only is it scary (and dangerous), he can also forget about hitting most GOE bullets with that. That said, I don't think it's going to be easy, since he's been jumping that close to the boards for a long time and it's probably built into him muscle memory at this point. I don't really know how bad the fall on the first Lutz was, since I couldn't see it over the boards and I don't have the guts to rewatch it, but he took a while to get up, so I'm gonna assume it was pretty bad. If there's one lesson I think he should really take away from that skate, it's "boards are not your friends so don't hug them".
I'm trying to remember which video it was, but Yuzuru did say that working on his skating skills actually made his jumps uncontrollable at the start-he had to readjust his jump technique, since the speed pick up was too much initially.
Now other than a potential growth spurt, lack of full run-throughs, I do wonder if his skating skills have changed to the degree they are affecting his jumps-specifically his entry speed. I don't think he went that much closer to the boards compared to previous year, but his jumps are bigger this season.

he fell on that 4Lz and his fall was so bad he slid and bounced off the boards (at least that's what it looked like in the broadcast)
it must've hurt like hell because he was visibly stunned for a couple of seconds before climbing back up, and then he just continued falling through the whole skate
the bloody cctv commentator even had to gall to say boyang gave up on his skate - yeah, why don't they try falling hard and bouncing against the boards like that and then keep falling on hard ice consecutively 5 times? see if they can still get their asses up to continue the rest of the program!
anyway, his problem with jumping too close to the boards has been there for a long time and he really, really needs to fix it. not only for goe/points, but for his own safety. it's gone from something like a cute quirk to something actually dangerous now. unfortunately, it's gonna be hard and will take time and lots of effort.
he also needs to improve on skating skills and TRANSITIONS!!! in general. again, lots of hard work needed
he's losing a lot of goe points because his jump have long intervals and lack of transitions. yes, those bloody isu judges are biased af but boyang himself also has shortcomings that the judges are preying on, using every opportunity they have to take points away from him
And yes, Boyang's lack of transitions is another area he has a lot of room for improvement. But it's his willingness, even eagerness to improve in all areas that makes me love him. I think that sets him apart from some others *cough cough*Nathan*cough cough*. And, unfair as it may be, I think the judging might actually help him stay motivated to do that. He really has to work for every single point he gets and that doesn't leave him much room for imperfections.
Plus the rule change about cutting the free skate by 30 sec (is that confirmed?) will also work against him since he takes a long time to prepare for his jumps. So yes, a lot of work is needed indeed, but I believe he can do it.
I haven't watched Boyang's LP yet, I'm debating if I want to watch it after reading comments.
Boyang is definitely working on his PCS areas-if anything this WC pounded into his brain that sadly, he will never get the cushion that bigger feds do. He'll have to go squeaky clean and then some to wrestle points out of judges hands. And even then we may debate about whether or not he's underscored.
As for the free skate being cut by 30 seconds...I might be too optimistic, but I think the guys who could get through this change okay, and not lose too much quality, are Yuzu, Shoma and Boyang. I think Boyang will work hard on improving overall, and I still have a bit of faith in our spidey. He is so far away from the TES and PCS cap, the only way to go is up.
Oh my god, now I'm really glad I didn't see it, poor Boyang. And commentators like that really get my blood boiling, that's like kicking someone who's already down. Which only makes me appreciate the commentators on Czech national TV even more (when they broadcast FS, which is basically just Olympics).
Speaking about them, they had pretty interesting commentary for Boyang at PC. One of them (Tomas Verner I think it was?) said that he was there at Boyang's choreo sessions with Lori and that they actually did try to get him to jump further from the boards, but he couldn't do it. I'm not sure how much effort he put into it at the time, but it worries me quite a bit. And he also said that another problem of Boyang's is that he has trouble focusing for a long period of time.

About his jumping habits, I remember seeing a news clip of him after 2012 JGPF and he was saying needed more steps to get the speed needed for a jump (I'm guessing due to his rough skating skills and his small built at the time? - He did look quite small compared to boys his age when he was younger.) That might have been a part of jumping routine for an extended period of time. Now that he's bigger and skating faster than before, this could place him much close to the boards.thanks for the notes about tomas commentary - yeah, i heard that boyang has always jumped like that since young so it's gonna be very, very hard to break this habit. he may even need to "relearn" his jumps, which will take lots of time and effort, but in the end it needs to be done.
