Boyang Jin

TSL said that, according to their sources, he's not going any more, but they also think it's a power play of some kind. Other than that, there's only a bunch of rumors from Chinese Baidu bars as to what's happening. All we know is Boyang is currently in China, where he'll be staying through this month.

Maybe there wouldn't be an 'official' confirmation that Boyang isn't going to TCC because after all, there wasn't even an 'official' confirmation that he was going in the first place. At least in the Chinese side of things....

It was first mentioned by China's head coach Zhao Hongbo in a TV interview a few months ago after WC (that they will send young skaters to train overseas and Jin to Brian Orser), guess that count as official. Later, Brian Orser confirmed, thus now as Jin still in China, not arriving Toronto sparkled rumours in the China discussion forums.

What Hongbo mentioned back then, if I'm not mistaken, was that they were considering the possiblity to have Boyang train in Canada with Lori and Brian - which back then to me sounded like they were going to send him to summer camps (like several other skaters have done there too). What Hongbo said didn't really say if anything was final, and it also didn't really say what that anything was. So IMO, no, there really never was anything official from the Chinese federation that they'd need to withdraw now.
Confrimation before only came from Brian, but then I wouldn't expect Brian to jump to a newspaper to spill it as soon as something fell through or changed. So I guess we'll be stuck with guessing games for a while longer.

Zhao did not specifically state the length of time, but he sounded dead serious in sending skaters overseas to improve.....short term training is common, Jin always had choreography done overseas, it does sound like long term arrangement. Brian Orser said it is long term arrangement with Jin quite some time later around when Medvedeva says she will join TCC, Brian won’t be that stupid to say so if the deal is not in place with the Chinese. So what happened between then and now is mystery, and now that rumours are flying around, no one in Chinese Fed is saying anything.

I believe the first Zhao interview mentioned Boyang's coaches would go with him to Toronto, maybe that is where there ended up being a conflict? Because obviously Brian has his own team and wouldn't want outside interference. But yeah, it's strange that Brian seemed to think everything was squared away in June and now there's issues.

His coaches did go with him to Lori for choreography and when he had blade work classes with Robertson. Perhaps that's what Zhao was referencing in that interview and everyone just assumed it was Orser. 😮😮
(I can't remember what was exactly said in that interview though)

That I thought was a bit strange, but then Brian confirmed a lot later that he is coming, so I thought they must have worked out the details. That is why the Chinese forum now rumours that the problem lies in the other 2 parties involved, which is Jin himself and his coaches. If he really gave up this opportunity, then I am really disappointed with him, though I am not a hard core fan of him, I do think he can go much further.

There're a lot of "thought"s there, don't you think?

Anyway, it is unlikely we'll ever know why he won't go if he doesn't... So I don't know what I can say about your or other people's (possible!) disappointment with him.

Knowing a bit how the Chinese media tends to work....rumours have been all over the place for days in forums without being deleted and no official statement, it's likely there are some truth in it. Although still need to wait for the formal statement (which might not be the whole story).

Yes, I have been keeping up with the stories and the rumours. The rumour he might not be going might be true. There are far too many rumours about motives, all of which could be equally valid, or invalid. Not all of them tie-in with each other. None of them have been deleted. Which ones are you believing? Or did they all happen simultaneously?

I think it seems likely he is not going.....I can't imagine as a serious athlete, he does not want to go....so I don't know.....

It is fine, it is his choice and his life. It is very possible for him to improve his skating with summer camp with Lori and staying at his home. Having said that, we shall see how this goes. It is just one season anyway. There are 4 seasons before Olympic. They might think next season is not ready yet but who knows what will come after 3 seasons.

I agree, it won't be the end of his career or anything if he doesn't go. It will be great if he does, but really, he hasn't reached the roof of his potential yet. It's his choice, and he can look for whatever resources he wants even if he's staying in China because he likes it better.

And even for Orser if not this season, maybe next season.

This.

While I, too, have been looking forward to Boyang's development with Orser, it's important to remember how much progress he's made with his current coaches over the past couple of years. He's a two-time world bronze medalist and 4th at the Olympics. Not too shabby.

Boyang could do a lot worse than staying with his coaches in China.
