From the article: "Ascending the top step of the podium at the World Championships was something Brian Joubert had dreamed about since he was a young boy. But like so many other notable champions in sporting history, Joubert learned at an early age that the road to the top was not always paved with gold...."

Here is the link to IFS's excellent article (includes great photos!):

I was hoping the article would mention his new programs. Does anyone know already what he will be skating?

Nice article with cute photos

...thinking about trying that leap he does off the rock on my porch.....:p

Good luck with that! Unless you're a World Champion and are sure to be able to land correctly... :P

Other than that, really interesting article, and great photos. I must say that the one with Brian in mid-air is pretty cool :)

Simond said this plan was the most logical one. “The new judging system is mainly rewarding cleanliness but not risk,” he said.

Wow, that's exactly the opposite of the truth? Joubert's coach does not understand CoP enough. Underrotated jumps get hammered but, for any other mistake, you're far better off in the new judging system than 6.0.

Oh, and also...

However, one post-Worlds event occurred that did not make the champion very happy. Joubert expected to be the leader in the men’s category for the International Skating Union (ISU) World Standings Bonus, but when the results were announced, he found himself in second place behind Takahashi. Joubert admitted he was puzzled and confused.

Hahaha! Karma served Takahashi with some justice after unfairly losing the Gold Medal at Worlds.

Joubert should be so, so thankful for that Gold. Nobody (post-figures anyway) has ever placed 3rd in the Long Program and still won the World Title. That LP of his only deserved 4th place too (Tomas Verner deserved 3rd). Joubert is quite lucky.

It's funny. Has anyone felt as I did, because I've always felt that Joubert gets severely undermarked by the judges. After all, if the article is correct, he completed one quad and 7 triples, which I don't think is quite how much Lambiel did for instance, so why should he have been placed third and get ciritized for a supposedly terrible perforamce? I felt the same about this olympic perforamces as well becuase I don't think he fell once either in his long or his short. He just had a few stumbles that he checked so he didn't fall on his butt, so what is going on here? I'm not a huge fan of him by any means, and I much prefer Lambiel's artistry to Brian's masculinity, but I honestly don't think Brian's that bad a skater...No one takes time to praise him unless he's perfect and produces three quads in one program.....

Last November Joubert made history at Cup of Russia, becoming the first skater to execute three clean quadruple jumps in a long program.

Was this absolutely necessary?

Didn't Timothy Goebel once land 3 quads in a single program, thus not making Joubert the history-maker? Perhaps that's the "lie".

Ps By the way, I believe Brian fell on a triple Axel in his Olympic program, Cassieandcheetah...

I think Tim Goebel landed 3 quads in one program more than once -- including the SLC Olympics.

I think Brian is at his peak now. His jumps are super, his spins improved so much (praise to the Swiss spinner, forget her name) and I believe Kurt will give him the most needed rhythym which he has long needed. Hopefully, he doesn't wear a dumb costume. He's a good looking straight guy that does not need any costumes to match his music. Black sweater over blue genes would do.

He's definitely up there with Daisuke and Stephane for the Worlds podium unless I see something strong in the upcoming GPs.

Perhaps Lucinda Ruh? I've heard her spins were magnificent, but never got to see them. I do love Stéphane Lambiel's spins... maybe Swiss have something in their genes which makes then great spinniers??

It dies seem like, In the new judging system, it's quad or bust. Lambiel did three quads and a triple Axel. Takahashi did 1 quad and two triple Axels.

Joubert did one quad and 1 triple Axel, but he gave away 5 points by turning his planned 4T+3T into a 3T+3T.

Even Verner did 2 quads and 1 triple Axel and beat Joubert on the tech part.

Nothing else seems to matter. Joubert, with a lack-luster LP after a great SP, still trailed a brilliant Takahashi by only twenty hundredths of a point in PCSs, and Lambiel by only two points.

I am puzzled and confused, too.

Joubert got 1200 points for winning worlds, to Takahashi's 1150.

Joubert got 800 points fore winning the Grand Prix Final, to Takahashi's 775.

Joubert won both of his GP events, while takahashi got a first and a second.

Did Daisuke get some extra points inthe "Other International Competitions" category?

Anyway, Dice got $45,000 and Joubert $27,000 bonus -- giving them each $72,000 for Worlds and the bonus together.

...sort of. The ISU document says, "The ISU will not be responsible for any taxes" and specifies that the money be "paid to the skaters through their respective Member Federations." Why do I have a feeling that the athletes will be pocketing less than the full bonus? :ohwell:

A little bit OT, but here are the top ten in the USU point challenge for 2007.

Takahashi $45,000
Joubert $27.000
Oda $18,000 (his suspension in the motor bike incident will cut into his wallet in 2007-08).
Verner
Lysacek
Preubert
Weir
Carriere
Lambiel (sat out some competitions)
Davydov

And number eleven? Brandon Mroz
