Campbell's Cup - on TV TODAY!

Just wanted to agree with those who were surprised, in a good way by Ando. She looked better here than she looked all of last season. Maybe she's decided she really wants to skate and is getting it together. I got the impression at comps I saw her in last year that she really didn't want to be skating.

MM ... I have to say I disagree totally about Emily. She skates like a bull in a china shop! I don't get what people see in her, sorry.

I think the skater that surprised me the most was Mai Asada. I've watched a few performances by her since at least 2002, and every time she looked like a skater who has taken some ballet lessons, and was just always TRYING so hard to be graceful and expressive, but all that just made her appear extra frentic, without much understanding of the music. But watching her at Campbells I thought she has really learned to control her movement and pace herself, while appreciating what she was listening to on the ice. Perhaps it's always just been a matter of getting the right choreography (or choreography at all, since the programs I've seen have all been pretty lackluster). I'm very impressed. This time she wasn't trying to be elegant and musical--she really WAS.

I liked all of the ladies' programs, and I must be the only one who thought this program could take Mao Asada a long way. IMO the Hungarian/gypsy music really brings out the sense of freedom that makes Mao's skating special. I really enjoyed both Nichol programs a lot even though Meissner and Asada both have their work cut out before they make the choreography convincing.

What I found amusing was the criticism of the various ladies' spirals, that they allowed their shoulders and back to drop to make the extended leg look higher. Emily Hughes does the same thing, yet her spiral was praised!

I do not particularly like Emily's skating. She ALWAYS has to save the 3Z in order to make her 3Z combination. She has done that in every SP and FS, and she rarely manages to land a clean 2nd 3Z--she either doubles it or pops it, as she did at Campbell's.

Trying to outjump Kimmie is a poor strategy. Emily doesn't even have a loop (she finally cut it out of her FS after falling on it all last season). I find it hard to believe Emily is planning 3Z3L and 3F3T, because her first jump is never secure enough to allow adding another triple jump.

That's what bothered me when I heard Peggy's talking. lol

I totally agree with you re: Mao's program. I thought it was a real step up for her in terms of sophistication. Last year's Sugar Plum Fairy really highlighted how VERY young she looked compared to the other ladies. This makes her look a lot less like a little girl.

Agreed that both Meissner and Asada have a ways to go before they really sell their programs, but at least now they have programs with the potential to be sold.

What a bother that the commentators feel the need to speak so much during performances!!! It will be a real treat to be able to watch the programmes without that constant blabbering at Worlds broadcast, LOL.

True, when you see a program without the comments it's all another thing. I can't enjoy a program 100% with all that blabbering.

I only saw the last 30 seconds of D&L, due to Buffalo's pre-empting. Did they say who choreographed their program this year? (Was it Wilson again?) I think D&L deserve kudos for being a dance team that can choose outfits that don't make me want to cringe.

Besides Mai, Miki was a real standout for me. There's just something I like about her, and she seems a lot happier now than she did last season. I really hope she does well. I'm getting excited about SA now ... Mai, Mao, Miki, Kimmie will all be there.

And regarding Emily, I was surprised to hear Peggy say she was planning two 3/3's ... I don't believe I've ever seen her even attempt one. I'm not convinced about her ... she's got enthusiasm, that much I'll give her ... but not much else.

For the most part enjoyed the skating. Was also disappointed the Evan is skating to same LP
Emily's skating didn't seem a stiff and jerky, Kimmie little more mature, longer lines.
Missed few of the skaters and like others would have like to seen the Pairs.
Since I DVD'd it have to go back and rewatch.
The seasons been long time comming and it here

I didn't get to see the dance portion of the event (which makes me want to cry in a corner as two of my favs are D&L and B&A) but D&L almost without fail have some of the most beautiful and elegant costumes. In dance particularly costumes can be hideous, or even downright offensive, but D&L's are always very chic and sophisticated, but not garish.

Wilson choreographed the program, and it was hot! - it was like they couldn't keep their hands off each other and I was afraid my tv was going to melt. It looks very polished for this early in the season and just needs some more speed. The costumes were beautiful, but a little too much like Somewhere in Time and I expect they will change them as the season progresses. I'd like to see some colour, or maybe just black and white with MF in a sparkly black sleeveless dress - she's got great arms. Patrice could wear boxers and a t-shirt (there's a thought!) and still look better than all the other men on the ice.

Did the fans demanding High Tech Jumps not notice the lovely Mai skating? the complete reversal of style by Weir? the maturing Oda?

Speaking of fans, did you notice how empty the stands were? What a shame. Were they just charging to much or is Cincinnati not a skating town.

tonya

I think it was televised, too.
Kimmie's wasn't a GREAT 3axle if compare to Tonya's. That hook on the landing proves that she is not actually completeing the revolution. Tonya had a straight edge flow out of her 3axle.

Count me on the list of those who remain unimpressed with Emily Hughes. She simply has no grace at all and I do not enjoy watching her skate in the least.
Not to mention her horrible spirals! But I must say that her presentaton has improved over last season. At least she didn't celebrate after every completed jump.
Also disapointed that the arena was nearly deserted. I'm afraid it speaks volumes about the state of our beloved sport.
This is why Spokane got the 2007 Nationals. They can fill an arena with locals.

The 'hook' on a jump landing can also mean an overrotation. It's very difficult to land a jump that overrotates without hooking it.

Let me get something cleared up- when you say the "hook" does that mean when a skater sort of "turns" out of the jump rather than going straight out of it?
