Campbell's Cup - on TV TODAY!

Just wanted to agree with those who were surprised, in a good way by Ando. She looked better here than she looked all of last season. Maybe she's decided she really wants to skate and is getting it together. I got the impression at comps I saw her in last year that she really didn't want to be skating.

Did I or did I not say (indirectly) to watch out for Miki this season. of course, that said, nothing here can predict what will happen later on in the season.

Wilson choreographed the program, and it was hot! - it was like they couldn't keep their hands off each other and I was afraid my tv was going to melt. It looks very polished for this early in the season and just needs some more speed. The costumes were beautiful, but a little too much like Somewhere in Time and I expect they will change them as the season progresses. I'd like to see some colour, or maybe just black and white with MF in a sparkly black sleeveless dress - she's got great arms. Patrice could wear boxers and a t-shirt (there's a thought!) and still look better than all the other men on the ice.

My only hope is that someone puts it on YouTube sometime soon....

IMO the PROGRAM is too much like Somewhere in Time. Not a good idea to repeat a program with similar costumes. The judges will get the impression that they aren't versatile or creative.

Well it will be intersting to see how Dubreuil/Lauzon's program is received on the GP circuit. Either way I certainly dont put anything into the scores of a cheesefest. Like chuckm I think it is a mistake for them to go with such a duplicate look and composition of their free dance as last year. Then again that might be the look they feel by far works best for them, as is not worth going to something else.

You said you were afraid of "jinxs." I am surprised to see you write her name.

Did anyone notice they spelled her name "Mike." And I liked the "Quad Queen" comment:agree: been using that for a while.

Although I said;
"Ando - come back, get over it and stop worrying about the quad, uchi kowasu yoma!!!!!" - 05-04
But after Peggy's comments during the Olys I was getting worried. I am so glad that she stuck it out 'cause she looks great. Thank goodness she didn't do what I was fearing, but Peggy had me worried back then. But she apparently beat the Demon!

My favorite comment of this was the one from Johnny about Evan "....to the bloody death of his program...." What the heck? I also thought it was funny to come out with a more masculine "look" (which I thought he was cool as a more feminine touch too, either way he's "cool") but chess to state yourself as being more masculine? I get it - the song / prog - but I thought it was a not so masculine of a "change." Nice outfit, he looked good.

Did anyone else notice the camera change right during Emily's Jump - well the out come was not good but you couldn't see what happened. What a ridiculous time for the director to call for a close up. They should NEVER have a close in shot like that during the routine. SHOW THE WHOLE SKATER!

hehe...evil you. Now I know who to blame if Miki has yet another bad season. You'd have "jinxed" her since you were the one to remind us of it in the first place... Shh, The skate gods should have forgotten by now!!

for those people who have trouble realizing things, it's a joke...an inside one, may I add.

Maybe the japanese ladies have one good season followed by bad, followed by good? Arakawa did, now maybe Ando will too!

Let me get something cleared up- when you say the "hook" does that mean when a skater sort of "turns" out of the jump rather than going straight out of it?

yes and either way it's not great. and by the way I was not a Tonya fan although it's starting to sound like it.

I didn't notice the one you're speaking of but I think they did closeups of Johnny while he was skating. I forget the director's name but didn't he win an award or something?? I was very upset when they did that to Johnny, I dumped my chess game on the floor.

 Don't you know chess is the ultimate chick magnet? Back in high school they used to swoon when I played my pawn to queen bishop 4!
  Math, you're just too much.

I think you're a chick magnet just being you!!!!

Until "Somewhere in Time," they were penalized by their lack of speed. I think doing a similarly floaty program is their only shot at a title, because Wilson disguised their weakest aspect.

I agree that speed is their weak spot. Personally, when it comes to mature skaters, I enjoy seeing programs that are "doable" enough that they are performed expertly. It's when it comes to younger skaters, that I want to see some stepping out of comfort zone (are we ever going to see that from Belbin and Agosto?!).

I have no idea, and I am sure he/she was a little distraught with the timing of said change as well - mistakes happen. I think the real issue is less "artsy fartsy" during the skate. Plenty of time for that in between. Who was the one who quoted Fred Astare's "show the whole dancer when dancing." If the whole skater was in either camera then the skates and what happened in contact to thew ice would not have been missed. They did rerun a separate camera after showing what happened. But IMO, it should have not been "necessary" to to viewer to see all of what happened.

:agree: The ones of Johnny got me a little anoyed but the timing of Emily's was during the "messed"
ETA, I was WRONG!!!!!!!! No shocker. It was during her Step sequence ( which is just as perturbing because that is a KEY time to be looking at blades.

Anyhoo,
There is a time and place to make attempts to be Ang Lee. That is like having close ups of Jake the Snake's face when he hits R Smith long. You know he threw the ball but didn't ever see the ball.

I was very upset when they did that to Johnny, I dumped my chess game on the floor.

BTW , That is a pretty impressive move!

Campbell's

MZHeng,

You are absolutely right about Caroline Zhang. She is a spectacular skater. Right now at her young age she is showing such amazing potential. I believe she is a more graceful skater with better presentation skills than Michelle Kwan showed at that age. If Caroline can stay injury free, I believe she has amazing potential in the years to come.

In my opinion, she out performs Kimmie by a landslide.

I think they could get away with that trick just once. The judges aren't going to be fooled a second time.

Actually Euterpe, it would kind of be a third time. Their "breakout" season in
2000, where they finally went from 4th at Canadians to 1st, and landed in 10th at their first Worlds, had a similarly themed program. (It was skated to music from the film Life is Beautiful). Prior to last year's FD, it was probably the season where their program had the best buzz. They do romantic so well, and some of their more versatile programs weren't well received at all by judges or fans. They are probably better off doing what they are doing.

I think they might benefit from the simpler looking program since so many of the dances are crammed with too much crap since CoP started. It sets them apart from many of the other teams. They are also lucky they can do complex lifts. She's never pulled a skate to her head or done an upside-down split to earn points.
