Carolina Kostner

The new FP is beautiful!

I'm on a budget and I was only going to attend Finlandia Trophy on Saturday, but between Caro's Faun FP and PapCiz's yet-to-be-unveiled FD, I think I just HAVE TO purchase the Sunday ticket, too. (Here's hoping neither of them withdraw...)

I hope as the season progresses, Carolina will add some sort of a piano ending to her SP. It just seem like a soft, yet an abrupt end to any program. Yet to see her LP, but I really felt the SP just fizzles at the end. :ohwell:

PS: Surprised Caro has such low number of pages in her thread. Which leaves the question- Why? Even Zagitova seems to have a higher page already. :slink:

Please someone tell me it is a case of Hanyu where the thread got overloaded that it had to be rebooted. :scratch2:

Mmmm. Never noticed that before. It does look bad when you think of it like that.

I just did a search and, although there have been story threads about Carolina, this is the only Fan Fest thread she has had.

Mind you, although she has been competing at Senior level for 15 years, this thread was only started 5 years ago. And, well, we know that she was out of competitive action for a couple of those years.

I suppose that us fans of Carolina are just quieter and not as outspoken as the fans of the Russian skaters are. Which is quite fitting, since Carolina is like that herself.

And that is just one of the many things that endears her to us! :)

What Carolina is doing is incredible. She always had an incommensurable talent for many reasons never fully exploited, but what she is doing right now goes beyond medals and victories. She is skating for the love of the sport, and it shows. I've never seen her so free and while obviously she can't be as powerful as before, the quality of what she does is still all here. She is a blessing to this field of ladies who I hope can really be inspired by her.

Still mesmerized by her free. I love the short but the free keeps me coming back because of its subtlety and the nuances of the music. I think it's a great exercise comparing her program to the ballet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D8ES9LJ8rkU Different art forms and limitations. The ballet captures the scene perfectly. Carolina can't do that of course, but she's able to use her skating to match the movement and dreaminess of the music.

I also love how Lori was able to translate some of the poses and hand movements from the ballet without totally copying it or being constrained by it. The music is also not very kind to a figure skater in that it doesn't develop in the satisfying way we're used to. Janet Lynn had other music cuts in her program after all. This was so ballsy. You get the feeling that Lori wouldn't have given it to anyone else. I don't see any other current skater pulling off this kind of masterpiece.

I really like the sheer tranquillity of her FS, how it really exudes confidence and serenity: it was not an exciting performance or a goosebumps-giving one, it was a triumph of harmony and composure.
The step sequence at the end can be improved a lot (given her usual standards), but considering the way she skated in Finlandia this is a huge improvement, and the main goal was to bring those solid jumps out there in both programs. Well done, Caro! :agree:

Nice article by Beverly Smith with lots and lots of quotes from Lori N.

Thank you so much for this! Watching that program you knew that it came from a special place. You don't pull out such complex music just for anyone and trust that they'll be able to sell it in an understated way. I'm so grateful Carolina is still skating! I do not speak as someone who was a fan her entire career, but as someone who has been won over by her commitment to both the art and sport of figure skating.

I also got a Nathan bonus in there. Two fabulous pieces of Lori choreography this season.

Congrats to Caro for the silver medal at Rostelecom! :hb::hb:

I keep watching her heavenly Free again and again, never get tired of it. :luv17:
Whenever Caro steps on ice and starts her skating, the ice itself suddenly looks completely different from the one others skated before her to my eyes, as if she's skating on something else than just ice. We don't see many of such skaters these days...sigh... We are so lucky as fans of the sport, should be grateful for the fact that Caro will be at the Olympic Games one more time, for the 4th time. Wish her a great and iinjury-free season. You go girl! :hap10:

Here are some photos I took of Carolina at Lombardia Trophy in September (from opposite the judges)

I saw her at Finlandia too (from the judges' side :-D) and I will upload photos from there too, "real soon now"...

Very interesting article about Carolina Kostner & Lori Nichol. For Lori ... Caro is like an angel, goddess even

https://bevsmithwrites.wordpress.com/2017/10/23/queen-carolina-nuff-said/

Those details are my favourite:

I did not know that her relation with Lori is so close  Do I understand it correctly ... but Carolina was working with Chinese skaters under her choreographer absence and pulled it off? :agree:

Nichol knows no one else like her, unless you’re talking about her parents and her brothers and her family. They’re just the same. “She’s divine on the ice and off the ice in a way that blows my mind on a constant basis,” Nichol said.

About two years ago, Nichol had an appointment for surgery on the day her son was to compete at a provincial championship that day. Of course, she could not go. Kostner had been in town, working with Nichol to polish up a routine.

Kostner stepped in, without hesitation. She took Nichol’s son to his tournament. She watched the tournament on her own, because she didn’t know anyone, aside from the team. And she celebrated with Nichol’s son as they won. And brought him home.
Later, Nichol was facing another surgery during choreography season, and wasn’t allowed back on ice yet. Still, she had to work with the entire Chinese team. Kostner flew from Italy on her own dime “to be my body,” Nichol said.
“She knows my teaching. She knows my mind. She knows what I want and I could say things and she would create them as I wanted, and then teach the skaters.”
