It just accured to me, after reading a post on the junior worlds thread, that Caroline and Marai will not be elebigle for senior worlds until 2009. Luckily, they dn't miss any olympic games, but i think that they are both great talents and that they c oud easily medal or win senior worlds this year. I remeber when i similar issue came up with mao asada, who could not go to torino. I think that caroline and marai's story is worse, because they have to wait TWO years just to go to worlds. Is this fair? I think that these age limit things have to stop. if you are that good when you are thet young, you shoudl be able to compete. Who knows what will happen in two years? injury, burnout etc....

thoughts??

At least they have a shot at 2010 when the time comes, and CAN go to the pre-oly worlds unlike Kimmie and Emily before 2006.

no I agree with the age limits... I do think that it at least helps the body develop a little more...

this will also help them get enough senior events under their belt anyway... like RD said at least they have a worlds shot - if they make the team, that's not even a given yet - prior to possibly going to the olympics

i still don't understand holding these girls back for health reasons. They are still practasing triple lutzes and triple axels. they are still competing on the grand prix circut etc. the only thing diffrent is that thier work can not be rewrded by a world or olympic title. i think that these rules wer put into play by the "older" skaters who could not stand the youngesters who kept beating them, and then dropped out of skating. The girls in the gympastics competions are very young....

I say if you are good enough, good for you. age should have nothing to do with when you are elegible for the worlds. Thye might as well say no skaters over thirty... there is too much of a injury risk!

The rules were put in place by the ISU. Skaters, old or young, had nothing to do with the rules.

just because another sport allows it, and just because the girls still train the jumps does not make it right...

Exactly what I was going to say.

And for pete's sake, neither of these girls has even been introduced to PUBERTY yet. They are junior skaters. They are fun to watch. Let's wait a while before "Anointing" either of them as being able to win Sr. Worlds THIS year. Or, did Mao, Kimmie, Miki, Yu-Na, and every other current senior ladies skater just drop off the face of the earth??

I think there should be an upper age limit on competitive skating. 18 and out. What we now call the junior world championship should be renamed as just the World Championship. After that, you start working on your artistic expression as a professional entertainer -- or get on with your life in other directions.

Same with other sports. It just seems weird to see grown men bouncing a basketball up and down a court, for instance. JMO. :)

The age limit rule is in place, so that some countries (like China, North Korea..) disregardful of human rights not to abuse youngsters for nationalistic purposes.

How about Little Mao when she did those 3+3+3 at age of 10 or 11? Is that considered abuse in your eyes?

Most girls go through puberty by the time they are 16. If a girl has a great deal of success before puberty is no guarantee of continued success post puberty. No breasts and no hips = easier to rotate. Some athletes can adjust for the changes, but some cannot. Psychologically, it'll be easier on the ladies to achieve senior level success after their bodies have matured and they are also more likely to be emotionally mature.

Tara Lipinski blew out her hip at the age of 15, endlessly practicing her 3L3L combination. There are very good reasons for age rules.

Incidentally, the age rules were voted on by the federations before their adoption, and not arbitrarily put in place by the ISU.

I think Caroline has gone through puberty this past year. She grew several inches this year.

I have to agree with you just because of Todd & Mike. I'm not sure 18 is the right age though. Maybe 24?

I think most girls have gone through puberty at 13 or 14. 16 is kinda late.

Don't you mean the tripple fluts-tripple flutz? I don't think she EVER actually did a clean lutz.
