Very interesting conversation. My thing is just be polite and thoughtful to everyone with compliments or criticisms. You can under the right circumstsnces compliment a woman for her appearance in a polite way but it also has got many a man into trouble when it goes past that intentionally or not.

As far as coaching goes did a TT girl edge PA phenom Titova in controversial conrtoversially in Saransk?

Maybe "wokeness" will not do so well in Europe than it seems to be doing in North America, because Europe has learned from history. At least one ought to hope so.

Even mentioning a term such as "microaggression", sends shivers down my spine.

Defnitely not in eastern Europe so far, at least on this matter, though first swallows are appearing here as the previous experience is fading away. What I truly don't like on this all "wokeness" is pretty obvious censorship and auto-censorship I see in the west as people are often afraid to express their true opinion, which is very awkwardly reminding what we were experiencing for forty years here. As there were so called culturally-political requirements here on art during the totalitarian era, now we see once again something similar from the other side. More and more characters proclaiming only the officially allowed attitude, what once was an overturning of cliché became the most annoying cliché itself and such opinions like "if you are a woman and receive a compliment, you should be actually angry because that only strenghtens your inferior position in a society, if you wanna be the true strong independent woman you should take every smile directed on you as a rape attempt" are definitely not rare. What's more sad, I don't think majority of people think like that, but they just are afraid to say otherwise, because someone could call them "XY-ist", they can lose job, become a target of public denouncement etc. (when they didn't commit any thinkable crime).

I don't think there was anything controversial on Alisa's victory and I've expressed my opinion in RLT already.

That particular claim was wrong. She suggested the judges forgot to add the 10% to base value in Sofia's combo, but turns out it took place before the half way mark, so the judges were correct

Then Sofias mother ended up with egg on her face and needs to be reprimanded by the Russian federation. Can't have public complaining and criticism of the judges and then be wrong. Dang. Lol.

Has EG ever complained about a score or anything against one of her skaters? I didn't think so.

Two things I would like to add in the defence of Sofia's mother

1) She apologised in a later post.
2) Plushenko's post today suggests that his influence to Sofia's mother's reaction was probably big. And not in a good way

Interestingly, a similar sentiment exists among some people from other ex-communist countries (Latin America etc.) or emigrants from communist countries (e.g. the Chinese diaspora). That's partly why in America there is a substantial portion of Asian and Latino voters who sway Republican, which baffles people who hold the simplified worldview of immigrant/minority = left. People's values are a reflection of/reaction to the environment they grew up in. Discerning people who experienced repression or paid attention to history should know that it can come from both the right (e.g. Nazi) or left (e.g. Stalin). But a lot of people don't realise, which is why history repeats itself in reactionary cycles...

Back to the topic, politics are a spectrum (despite the best efforts of both ends to paint it as binary) and I'm pretty sure most socially liberal young people like me are fine with calling skaters 'cute' or admitting to minor crushes on them (age-appropriate ones of course).

It's good that Sofia's mother apologized. But she should not have made such a mistake.

But what a close great competition that was with those 3 girls.

I would just add that Alisa won both SP and FS, she only fell behind a little in the elements that took place before the programs, so her placements in segments was 5, 1, 1. Sofia's placement in segments was 3, 2, 3:

Hehe, I can see that Eastern Europe gets triggered so fast. And I say this in the best of ways, with me having a third of eastern europe ancestry as well.

Anyways, good discussion. l do think there's a difference in saying:
1) "You like nice tonight" or "You're so cute/you look so hot!" to your friend or known party and in accordance to the context of the event (including FS competitions)

Than saying:
2) "She's nice to look at" to your male coworkers, while looking 'thirsty' looking at her butt and in the context of objectifying a person being reduced to a 'trophy wife' title.

I was referring to the later. "She is nice to look at" is not the same a saying "she looks nice". Depending on the context, there could be an implied despective tone to the first phrase which is to what I was referring.

Going back to the skating, Elena always looks nice. But, to me, she is not reduced to being only a pretty object that decorates AoP rinks. She is pretty and has a great a talent for dancing.

It's a joke of course, but that's just an example how nonsensical it is to feel offended by things that are not offensive or telling people they should be offended by things that are not offensive by their standards (and IMO by any reasonable standards). You simply has to accept there are people, women for instance, who are not offended by adequate compliments even from strangers (while they consider some things perfectly adequate even if those things are not adequate by your personal standards).

It goes both ways, because my chances of getting offended by the constant generalization of "North America" and "the West" are at this point close to zero lol, especially since people just love to bring that up in the threads ever so often.. (It's a forum after all!)

Alina won all important titles. I don't believe her coaches would go to the press and say she got robbed or any nonsense like that even if she did. Mishin doesn't do it either. Nor Davudov, Buyanova, Rukavicin or snow leopards.

Speaking of the Elena it would be nice if she had been there for Russian cup final for Aliona. She could of used a female confidant from PA to speak to. Or Yulia. It seems like Ilinykh has been gone from AoP long before the Cup final, and Lipnitskaia appears to work only with the younger kids, so she probably had no interaction with Kostornaia.

I agree! This is why I have lost any and ALL faith in "Safe Sport" This is clear evidence of coaching abuse and this "Woman" should be banned for life. She is lucky that child didn't split her chin on that ice. I have to wonder if the parents will press charges, I know I would.

the link posted in this thread is from Irina Slutskaya so I would imagine this clip was filmed in Russia where Safe Sport has no jurisdiction.

I see. Does Russia have anything like Safesport to protect these young skaters? How can any authority watch that clip and not at least isuue a warning of some kind.
