Comments on ESPN coverage

It's all about the known football players; the rumored baseball players, the known pugilists, the Tennis players (both men and women). Haven't heard anything about those guys and gals who shush that big disc on the ice as an answer to shuffle board. No word on their sex lives. The media is not with it.
It's excellent copy for the media hounds. Americans love dirt. It sells.

You know I should just never say anything, because someone will come along and say it perfectly anyway! - I think it took me 12 posts and got some attacks trying to say practically the same thing.
take a note from Johnny's book, be short, blunt, and to the point... no need for a lengthy analysis when a quick sentence will do
if there's one thing I've learned from Johnny... ok not really I was like that before he was a big name in skating

I am wondering if people are getting too sensitive because there is Johnny. Good lord, Johnny welcomes these attentions. I am happy for him that he made the stir and stir constantly. I couldn't help but laugh at this for I am a Johnny Weir's skating fan. But I could care less about his off ice activities, and I think his photo in high-heels was disgusting. By all means, Johnny invited the controversy by doing these. He's prepared for facing the judgment from all directions, and he is proud of what he did.
The USFSA/ABC/ESPN wanted to do everything to raise the sport and they think to have a heterosexual champion might at least partly do the trick. And I think it is probably so to the general public which has heterosexual as the main stream. But not to me (And I think it's not to many die hard skating fans). I love whoever skaters could grab my heart by his/her skating, nothing else. So I don't care Johnny's sexual orientation, or any skater's. As long as I like their skating, I like them. But to the general public, it might be a part of the reason. Who knows. I do agree, though, that they went out of their way to portrait a hero. Give them some credit. They worked so hard to try to make this sport popular again.

First: from those I know who know Evan, they're sort of surprised (the person who trains with Tanith thought they were just friends, and he sees her everyday *shrug*) (If [anything comes of it] he and Tanith can have exceeding pretty uberchildren. But I'm like that.)
In any case--my one major beef was during Ladies' short and it's probably because I know the people involved, but...was it really, really necessary to use Kylie Gleason's presence as an excuse to humiliate Suna Murray (her mother) with thirty-year-old TV footage? You could tell Dick Button was embarrassed to be showing it and wasn't really amused, especially since he's going to be here in Boston in a month to do the MLW exhibition as emcee, and will almost certainly see her. That was just low. She was on an Olympic team, for heaven's sake, was it necesssary to show a crash that humiliating?

I don't see anything humiliating about crashing into the boards. Who hasn't? I bet the lady herself looks back on that now with a chuckle.

I would say "supper kids" too wow could you imagine?... But I wouldn't put to much faith in a rumor or an rink buddy's thoughts unless it was mine
Sounds like the "training buddy" has loose lips. But there are good friends who do things without commitment - as well as calling "something" they are doing "something different" then what the rest of the world might call it. Ah blessed relativity

They go to movies and dinners holding hands and Arm around, etc..., and yet he gets upset when anyone asks "how is your girlfriend." He will say, "She is NOT my girlfriend, stop calling her that." Yah "issues IMO.:yes:

Just want to mention the best moment of the entire ESPN broadcast: Close-up of Danielle Kahle's shaky hand before her free program. The cameraman really captures the feel of the competition.

That is what bugged me the most about ESPN's coverage. At first I thought it was because the Men's short program was a splatfest, but afterwards I checked the protocols and that apparently was not the case. For whatever reason, ESPN preferred to rehash old fluff (the "Chicklets" piece) and show the girls falling down instead of the boys doing well. It seems like coverage of the pairs has always been bad, but this year I felt particularly cheated.

Heh, Sean, this is skating. Everyone talks about everyone else, and everyone knows everyone else. If I had decided to move to Chicago, I could have had a meeting with a coach before I had a place to live, because my coworker's daughter used to train there and she offered to hook me up. Ever hear of "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon"? In skating, try playing "Six Degrees of...", say, Scott Hamilton or Dick Button, and most of us in US skating who've stuck with it for any length of time at all can do it in two or three degrees at most, even sticking with coaches or training partners.
Mathman: Suna was not happy. If you know her, you could tell looking at her. It's just not flattering at all, and really irrelevant to her daughter's first trip to senior Nationals.
And I was MAD about the lack of short programs. I'm used to dance getting screwed out of air time, but MEN'S?

IMO anyone who wears high heels and doesn't absolutley have to is just crazy................whatever their gender or sexual orientation. The mental picture I got here was of the guy in drag in "Some Like it Hot" and that was hilarious.
Lol! Johnny said something along those lines about it--that he doesn't know how women wear those things. Coming from a guy who spends half his life in skates, that's saying something. At least he didn't have to walk in them.
To me, that pic didn't look like a man in drag, or comical or anything. Johnny is fairly androgynous looking, so it wasn't that jarring, imo. I thought it was pretty
