The Cypriot Championships were held in Zakaki at the weekend.
Name: Cyprus National Skating Championships 2018

Venue: My Mall, Zakaki, Limassol

I don’t know if it was because Nationals were held later this season, and hence were encroaching on school exams, but there were quite a few familiar names missing this season.
Senior Ladies
Polina Ustinova is now too old for Juniors, which means that Cyprus is now represented in the Senior ranks for the first time.

Junior Ladies
This was a bit of a surprise. Having been Champion at whatever level she was competing in every year since 2013 (when she was 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] in Cubs), Chryso Georgiou continued her run by winning her very first Junior level competition. (Admittedly, she did not have any opposition for the past 2 years in Advance Novice, but she did in the years before that).
The Junior Champion for the past 2 years, Daniella Ipsarides, won the SP, being the only skater not to have a fall. However, Georgiou was only half a point behind her. And a dominant display in the FS, where she won by nearly 9 points, sealed the title for the class rookie.
Incidentally, Georgiou was the only skater not to get any deductions in the FS (Ipsarides got a time deduction, Kalogirou had 2 falls and Sechi had 1 fall).
Last year’s bronze medallist, Danai Hadjimitsi, was not entered this year. Eliana Kalogirou and Giorgia Isabella Sechi finished in the same order as last year.
Kalogirou won the bronze medal, with Sechi finishing 4[SUP]th[/SUP].

Advanced Novice Ladies
Like last season, there was only one entry this year. This time, it was the half-Russian Limassol girl Christiana Afxentiou, who had won the Basic Novice A title for the past 2 seasons:

Basic Novice A Ladies
I don’t like the way that Basic Novice A was done this year. Like last season, Spanish skater Janire Idiakez was taking part in the Cypriot Championships as a guest skater. HOWEVER, rather than having all the Basic Novice A girls skating in a competition together like last season, the organisers had all the local girls skating in a competition together on Saturday, while Idiakez skated in a competition on her own on Sunday.
Like, how is that supposed to help Janire get more competition experience?!
Anyway, reigning Cubs champion Andrea Loizides won, while Laura Farran retained her Silver medal. Reigning Beginners (Group A) Champion Varvara Chiplieva won the Bronze medal.

I won’t go through the younger age levels, except to say that it is encouraging to see so many entries.
It was especially encouraging to see three boys competitions. Although there was only 1 entrant in each of them, it is still a good sign.
And speaking of boys, the only male skater to represent Cyprus internationally, Nikita Vitryanyuk, was down to make his return… but as an Ice Dancer! His partner is a 12 year old from Moscow, Maria Miliykova. But, given that the Ice Dance page still has the starting order up, I take it they did not appear.
CONGRATULATIONS EVERYBODY!!!
