Czisny Looks to Rebound at Grand Prix Final

RD, In Alissa's events, Skate America and Skate Canada, she had point totals of 158.30 and 168.32, respectively. In Kimmie's events, Trophee Eric Bombard and NHK Trophy, she had point totals of 155.72 and 152.18, respectively. Alissa's Skate Canada total would have placed her fourth at Trophee Eric Bombard, behind Mao, Sasha, and Shizuka, but ahead of Rochette. Kimmie's point total at TEB would have placed her third at Skate Canada, after Czisny and Rochette, but ahead of Nakano, Suguri, and Kostner. Alissa's Skate America total would have placed her third at NHK but only tenths of a point away from first. Kimmie's NHK total would have placed her third at Skate America, behind Sokolova and Czisny, but ahead of Onda.

So if they had skated each other's events, neither would have made the final, but Kimmie would have had more Grand Prix points, despite having the lower point total. What events you skate in is going to become one of the most important variables in the coming skating seasons.

Excellent analysis, which to me calls it a close contest at Nats. IMO, it will boil down to jumps first, and non-jumps second. There is a red flag out there regarding full rotation on Kimmie's jumps. There is a red flag out there regarding consistency on Alissa's jumps. I think if they both do fairly equally well in the jump department, I might give Alissa an edge in the non-jump department. But of course this fails to take into consideration the "live" factor that I have yet to see...so I qualify all opinions with that, LOL!! I hope they both skate well so we can have a nail biter, and lots of GOOD stuff to debate.

Can't wait to see Nats!!

Hi Joe. Sorry it took me so long to acknowledge your post. You are a big part of the reason I am looking forward to the bolded part above. I was totally new to sharing info, thoughts, opinions, etc. about this sport via the internet in the months leading up to Dortmund. I specifically recall your posts (although they were not the only ones - I guess I must have seen one of yours first) reminding everyone that TV does not = Live. So when my hubby bitches about the cost of me going to Nats, I can honestly say you are partly to blame. (just kidding of course - but I can't wait to experience first hand what the differences are). And believe me, the Tivo will be well set before I leave!!!

Thanks for reminding us all that there is a big difference between Live and Memorex.

One of the important things you will see is so many more events and skaters you have never seen and some like Rohene you've only read about. 99 per cent of them will not make the TV, some, of course, you will remember for future competitions. The American ladies and men are a good field to watch. With Michelle in the slump, can anyone beat Sasha? Bebe? Emile? Alissa? Kimmie? or some new whippersnapper? The men with Johnny the far out favorite but who knows? Michael, Tim, Evan, maybe Rohene?

Your husband should go with you. Lots of married couples will be there. But make sure he tapes the events so you can see the difference between live and video.

Based on reports from people who HAVE seen people like Rohene, I have watched him (and others) via the internet. Still, that is not the same as seeing them live, and I can't wait for the ones I know???? and the ones I may not have seen - "new whippersnappers!!" And LOL, Mr. Doggy doesn't like to watch FS much at all, so a week of THAT would be torture for him. But I love him to pieces, because he has no problem with ME going. :)

Back to topic - I can't wait to see them all live!!

Three of these four scores are in the 150s, and I think that this represents the typical performance for both of these skaters.

I have a sinking feeling that Alissa's 168 was one of those extraordinary times when a skater gets in a zone and skates beyond her ability. To repeat these marks at nationals, Alissa will have to master all of her jump elements securely.

Kimmie, on the other hand -- I think she does need the triple Axel to separate herself from the pack.

JMO.

The next question is what score do you think it will take to make the team?

Kimmie had a bad SP at TEB and then a bad LP at NHK.
Put her best SP and LP together and you get a 166.90

I agree that the best Alissa can do is the 168 she got at SC.

You can see how much your points can change with mistakes. Look at Alissa at GPF. I think one of them will screw up at nats under the pressure.

It all depends on how everybody skates but I'll say at least a 160 to make it on the team.

Very good point. However, one must take into account that Kimmie skated in MUCH tougher fields than Alissa did. How about point totals from both events? (What would that be?) Or maybe they'll just say, Alissa was the only American to make it to the GPF, therefore we give her the spot if it comes to a close decision.

The trouble is that the guidance doesn't give them a discretion to look at the toughness of the field, it just says placement which would suggest not even the score matters its just tje placement at the various competitions.

Actually the scores at Nationals will probably be ridiculously inflated, that you have to consider surreal numbers in what it would take to make the team. For women I would say it would take a 190 to make the team(probably equivalent to a 158 total of two performances by Oly judging standards). For men it would take a 250(probably equivalent to a 200 total of two performances by Oly judging standards). The scores at Nationals are sure to be funny.

Why do you think the scoring at nationals will be inflated? On the GOE you can still only mark within a certain range so people aren't going to get huge scores there. Both Kwan and Cohen have received marks in the high 7s on the PCS on the international circuit so even if they were given marks in the 9s for the PCS its hardly doing to make the difference of 40 marks.

Incredible that everyone is using the comparative scores in getting an idea of a skater's power. I remember after the first comps, I mentioned that scores may be compared from different competitions. My argument was that the base scores are there and there would be little variations in the competitions except for GOEs. Everyone jumped on me saying that there are different judges for each competition and the scores will have no value after that competion. Well..........

I don't think they'll be that inflated either. It would do Kwan and Cohen no good at all as they need to get a somewhat fair assessment of their programs for the olympics. Giving them 9's would make them think they didn't have to work on things. I think they would be more abt to mark the other skaters lowerin the PCS if they want to do some placement changes.
