Dancing with the Stars -- Vote for Kristi!

I know at least one Elvis fan who isn't even 18 yet.
Another one who's 16 and loves Marilyn Monroe.
Go figure.
I think Priscilla Presley is doing a great job, the waltz wasn't her best, seems like she's better at the 'sultry' or 'rhythm' stuff.
As much as I hated to see Julianne go, that radio guy was useless, not just as a dancer.
I'm guessing they partnered her with someone like that because they knew she was going to be plenty busy promoting her album anyway......
Kristi is still, naturally, the favorite, but in my opinion, Shannon Elizabeth is definitely a threat.
She's more natural, Kristi is sometimes a little mechanical and theatrical, more like a windup doll than a real life girl.
The waltz she did with Derek Hough was, just like Len Goodman said, the best dance of the night: Light, airy, romantic.
Young love in a flowery spring garden, that's what a waltz (a real waltz....) is supposed to be.
With Champagne, of course.....

Btw, the height reference wasn't just directed at dancing......very much applies in all facets of life.

The BIG question: How well would Yamaguchi be doing with out her skating fan base?

Joe

you make it sound as if she doesn't belong! she's consistently getting the highest scores by the judges...

and is a favorite on many non skating boards...

so chances are she'd do just fine either way.

...Kristi is sometimes a little mechanical and theatrical, more like a windup doll than a real life girl.
Plus, Kristi is so petite (speaking of size) that it allows her partner to "overlead' (if that's a word) -- like moving a puppet around the stage.

Julianne Hough had the opposite probelm -- she had somehow to lug her partner around the floor while creating some semblance of an illusion that he was leading.

Kristi is still the greatest, though!

What about the football player's comment about horse racing? It's still a one-horse race, with Kristi way out in front. But this week, as they rounded the first turn, at least he was able to keep her butt in sight!

I caught the butt comment and thought it was funny, I loved Kristi's reaction too

How well would Jason Taylor be doing without his football fan base?

Marie Osmond made it to the finals last year because of her fan base.

Kristi Yamaguchi dances really well. I would bet some people are voting for her simply because of that. Add her pre-existing fans to that.

What's the point of your question?

Season 1 champion Kelly Monaco won because the soap fans. She was not very good at the beginning and it was bemoaned that her fans were keeping her in. However, something clicked and she began to excel in Latin.

Marie should not have been in the top 3 of last season. Those 100's of Osmonds kept her in to the end.

At least with Kristi, you can't question that she should still be in the competition.

The point is the people vote not the judges vote. Indeed, Osmund is another one I believe remained to the end because of her fan base. I'm not picking on Kristi who dances quite well. Sasha Cohen also made the semi-finals in that other dumb peoples vote with a blah performance over a talented tap dancer. Fans of celebs vote en masse'

As to Jason Taylor and the football crowd, you have to understand that men do not vote in these girly contests. Would you be interested in the Heisman Trophy?

Joe

FYI, men are not the only football fans. Have you seen Tim Tebow? Just in case you don't know who that is because you don't watch football, he won the Heisman Trophy.

Based on their performances so far Kristi should be in first place and Jason Taylor in second. If it comes down to these two I think that Kristi's fan base might be a deciding factor. Jason is very attractive and a smooth dancer and I can see why he would garner a lot of votes and not necessarily from football fans.

here we go with stereotypes... I guess my father's not a man because he's the one who picks up the phone and dials for these 'girly shows'

my mom must wear the pants because she loves football and cheers on the football players for these 'girly shows'

maybe the majority of men and women do as you say, but when Jerry Rice was on the show he made it very far because of his fan base... which was basically men because he is still considered one of the greatest players who ever played the game.

The point is the people vote not the judges vote.
Joe, on this show the judges' vote counts for half of the score and the peoples' vote for the other half.

A couple of seasons ago, rapper "Master P" was a contestant. He did it only as a favor to some younger friend (nephew?) of his who was originally scheduled, but then had to withdraw. Every week, Master P did everything he could to get kicked off -- just lumbering about making no attempt at dancing at all. But the rap fans (or maybe mischief-makers who wanted to throw a money wrench into the game) kept voting for him to stay.

Finally, the only way the judges could get rid of him was to give him a score of "3" (out of 10). This was so bad that even his fans couldn't save him.

Master P stepped in for his son, Romeo, who supposedly badly sprained his ankle playing basketball. Some cynics feel Romeo, who is now going to USC on a basketball scholarship, stepped aside and let his father do the show because Master P was promoting a new album. P didn't exactly take the show very seriously, and he even reduced his partner to tears more than once. He still managed to last four weeks, one week longer than newswoman Giselle Fernandez, whose father was a professional dancer and who obviously had dance training in her background.

Thanks for the info, Pixie Cut.

One thing to keep in mind is that obviously this show is not intended to be a serious dance contest. The reason this is obvious is -- the contestants are not dancers! ;)

So it's entertainment. Many contestants have received higher judges' scores than they deserved just because they were entertaining. Likewise, if "the people" want to keep bringing someone back, well, he who pays the piper calls the tune.

It is the viewing public that decides whether to watch the show or not, that determines the show's popularity, and ultimately that signs Cary-Ann's, Len's and Bruno's paychecks.

I definitely agree. If Kristi wins, will she not be the first lady to do so. All those non stereo typed guys never got enough power to let a lady win.

Oh well, not the end of the world. If Kristi wins, will she get the media hype that Marie has found outside the contest?

Joe

Oh bleep. I just tried to respond to Heyang's post above and I accidently hit the wrong button and deleted it instead. :o

I am so sorry, Heyang. Please post again. (It was a good one, about past winners.)

Edited to add: I mean "accidentally." (This is not my day. :o )

You expect me to remember what I typed at 1AM after a long day with the niece and nephew !? (I love them to death, but teaching a 6 yr old and 8 yr old how to play with a Wii and dealing with temper tantrums when they lose to each other is not the best way to spend a Saturday afternoon and evening.) I'll try. ;)

Kelly Monaco has been the only female champion of DWTS - she won season 1. I think there were only 6 or 8 celebrities. She definitely was lucky to have the support of soap fans.

With regards to success after the show, it's really up to the celebrity. So far, Drew Lachey is the only winner who has parlayed his win into post DWTS opportunities. He has gone on to perform hosting duties on several other shows and these are jobs he would not have gotten otherwise. While Kelly Monaco is also in the entertainment field, I have not seen evidence that she has taken advantage of her increased exposure (although there was talk of a pilot and a role on Desperate Housewives. The former could have happened even wtihout DTWS and the latter was a result of DWTS - however, neither came to fruition.) Winners Emmett Smith, Apolo Ono and Helio Casteneves have not used their wins to greatly enhance their celebrity. For me, Helio is the only winner that I had not heard of before the show - he was probably only known to Nascar fans; I'm not sure if he's gotten more sponsorships since winning DTWS.

Did I forget anything Mathman?

I should probably add that some of the runner's up have used the show for the gain more. Lisa Rinna has hosted for Entertainment Tonight (? one of those nightly entertainment news shows) whereas she was really mostly noted for Days of Our Lives, Melrose Place and hosting SoapTalk. Mario Lopez, Ian Ziering and Joey Fatone have also gotten hosting gigs - America's Best Dance Crew, Your Mama Don't Dance and The Singing Bee, respectively, as well as others.

Stacy Keibler was featured in promotions for her new role on What About Brian. This was the show taking advantage of her celebrity because the role was not that significant, even though she was on several episodes.

I consider the Osmonds in a whole different category. Their careers have risen and fallen at various times, but they have always maintained a huge fan base. They would have gotten attention regardless because of the family was celebrating 50 years of being in show business. They are on a world tour. Donny get the gig hosting the DWTS segment for ET because Marie was on the show.

Great post, Heyang!

Anyway,...

About Emmitt Smith, IIRC he admitted after the show was over that the only reason he went on it was to generate generate publicity for a business venture (I think it was in real estate?) that he was starting up.

If you have some spare dollars to spend, you can go to Smith's we site

http://www.emmittsmith.com/

and click on "Purchase Emmitt's Dancing with the Stars Merchandise." (I just sent off for a Cherlyl-Emmitt T-shirt for $19.99. )

What is interesting to me is that Kristi also said something along the lines that she had "put her career on hold" while she started her family, but now wants to get back in the game, in some capacity. I wonder what her future plans might be. (Go Kristi! )
