They most likely severed the femoral artery. Which is not something that is easy to survive because you lose a lot of blood very quickly. People after watching too many movies believe only a wound somewhere in the heart area can be fatal, certainly not in an extremity. I wonder if the thieves were stupid enough to think they'd simply prevent him from running after them with a thigh wound but otherwise he'd be fine.
