This is just so insanely surreal and bizarre. Read this on FB first thing in the morning at work and thought it was some strange joke. Absolutely horrifying.

Having a terrible week already and this just felt like a punch to the gut. I'm trying my best not to cry in the office. I think what hits me the most more than the loss of skating is that he was so young and seemed to have so many huge plans for his future! And now they're gone. Ugh.

I hope his family and friends can recover from this senseless tragedy quickly.
 
With such tragic news, there can be usually still found something positive. And that for me is the fact that the whole figure skating community is coming together to celebrate Denis's accomplishments and personality and to unite to mourn together. This community almost never comes together and it's very divided, which is natural for such a sport, but it makes me happy to see so many skaters coming together to offer their condolences and to remember Denis. I think there should be some kind of a special show to remember him and to perhaps donate to some charity. I bet Denis would have loved that.

Came back from work to read this. I'm stunned, speechless and shaking, and my eyes are moist. I'm used to accidents and freak injuries in FS, but this is something new and terrible. I hope they catch whoever did it... And to think things were looking so promising for Kazakhstan's skating with his show being a success and attracting top names... and I was curious to see him on the GP circuit as he didn't give up eventhough he was going through a difficult period tech-wise. :cry: May Denis' family and friends find lots of comfort. I'm in shock.

just got the news from my mother, when I woke me up from my nap. so shocked and devasted right now. RIP and many condolences to his family. He did so much for the sport in his country and has paved the way for other Kazakh skaters to succeed. he will be missed. :(
 
This is horrifying. I don't have anything else to say. It is incomprehensible.

My thoughts are with all the people who loved him.
 
Deeply saddened by this terrible news. We will miss you, Denis. Condolences to the family. Such a tragedy :(
 
aside from his wonderful abilities on the ice (which many had already spoken), what I remember most about Denis is what a cosmopolitan man he was (I can't get used to writing about him in past tense, this is just too much). It's like he was always eager to know more of the people around him, and the places he was at.

In snippets of ice-shows behind the scenes, or vlogs of other skaters, you get the sense of how he genuinely love to seek people out and make friends no matter where he was, and who they are - there's a real sincerity in him that is just so appealing and beautiful, and I think its a testament to that wonderful quality in him that so many skaters and fans are genuinely mourning his passing.
He was a wonderful ambassador for his country as well - I've never known how beautiful Kazakhstan is if it wasn't for Denis.

I am tearing up as I am typing this - it suddenly hit me that despite having lived a relatively short live, he had done so much good things, not just for himself but for others around him AND his country that he left such a positive legacy for all who had known him. What a man.
Kinda makes you think that life is short and you really have to make something meaningful with the time you have, and he really did, he really really did.
 
I still can’t believe it, or don’t want to believe it.......this world has gone crazy, all values and morals out of the window, I worry for the future,

An incredible person like Dennis just for car mirrors, oh come on......
 
In shock! No words...my heart skipped a beat when i first read it on twitter! I was in a meeting and suddenly everthing was in slow mo and in black and white. The people in my meeting and the background were muted! I just connected with Denis so much that I was jolted and suddenly enveloped by grief. I adore and is moved by his skating so much! He is one of my biggest favorites and definitely one of the most artistic skaters ever to grace the ice. Rest in peace my idol! Thank you for making this world a more beautiful place! You are permanently etched in our hearts and minds. Oh the sadness! To think Denis is the only high profile skater ever to notice my appreciation tweet! He faved my tweet! 😔😭😭😭😭

Such a shocking tragedy and a haunting feeling that it could happen to anybody, since he is such a beloved athlete by so many, especially in Kazakhstan. Thanks for the wonderful performances rising up on special occasions when the odds were stacked against you as at Sochi and Worlds 2013. It took a lot of heart, guts and spirit. This hits close to home for me because I once lived in Almaty (it was my favorite place to live), and other cities in Kazakhstan and still visit the country regularly. I have met such wonderful and hospitable people from there. some of the closest people I have ever known and shared time and conversations with, but I was once confronted by two thieves in Almaty on the street. It makes me realize how fragile life is because if I had resisted, this could have easily been me. May Dennis rest in peace and be blessed in the next world after giving so much to so many in this one.
 
Sad to believe his final instagram story was not long before his death. He was just enjoying a meal with his friend and then all of a sudden he was killed in such a cold blooded way. I hope the police finds justice for Denis and his family and put these murderers behind bars forever
 
I'm in shock... I can't believe this. I hope those men rot knowing they murdered their own national treasure. What a skater, and what an awful, awful way to go.

I had just started re-watching skating seriously around that time and it was thrilling to see a then 15-year-old Denis give what was the performance of a lifetime! He moved up from 17th to finish 8th and earn two spots for his country, the first time that's happened. I teared up a bit cause it was a time where it there was so much life ahead of him.

This is my fondest memory of Denis too. Kissing the ice and all… so young and promising :cry:

agree with everyone... him being gone is just too hard to take in... lucky the skaters who were invited to his glorious shows
