Denis Ten

I don't think it's time or the place to talk about past negative comments about his skating........

It's the time to wish him to rest in peace, to remember the beautiful skater and person he was. And enjoying our luck to be alive. I was born the same year than him, i enjoyed a meal with friends like him today but instead of him i'm alive at the end of day. We should enjoy that.

It's too shocking to hear the tragic news of Dennis Tenn, and I still cannot believe it's true. Dennis was a very sincere and loving figure skater. It is so sad that I lost the most passionate and talented skater. Rest in peace.

During 2010 when Yuna had her ATS all-star show in LA with Michelle Kwan at the time, Denis was just a member of the audience, as a young promising budding skater begin to train with Frank Caroll at the time. He had been invited to the show by Stephen Lambiel who is a member of the cast. I remembered him clearly because he and his boybands of trendy good looking youngsters really stand out with their rip jeans, chains and hair highlights at a figure skating show (yup Denis had that phase), and he only sat 2 rows in front of me so it is impossible not to notice. I remember being quite taken by how enthusiastic he was reacting to all the performances like any other member of the star-struck audience in the crowd, standing ovations, enthusiastic applauses, hollering and all. Something immediately stood out, He sure doesn't act like a star, even though he clearly is one, and there's something very warm and genuine about him (totally not a jaded teenager star I'd expect from LA) that I was even lucky to able to briefly chat to him after the show outside in the corridor to let him know I recognise him, that I like his Rachmaninov, and wish him best of luck in his future career. I remember asking him how he likes the show (he said he loved it and thanked Lambiel for the seats), he was clearly inspired, and I remember his sparkly eyes and good manners talking about figure skating and the future in general.

A few years on, he became a member of Yuna's show cast, her gala chaperone at Sochi (OBM), even signed up with her agency (the only international star to have done so I believe) and continues to be an active and supportive member to some of my favourite skaters in the figure skating community. He became a role model to many, a bridge between Europe/Russia, Asia, North America so easily and seamlessly, a responsible citizen of the world that is a wonderful spokesperson for the sport as seen during his country's Olympic bid.

He is a figure skater I will always have fond memories because of how he had lived, aspire to, and continues to struggle. Never forgetting to balance figure skating as both art and sport. Never compromise on the art even if it might not always work, or understood. To have the bravery, courage, intellectual curiosity, vigour, and conviction to not take the easy way out, to go beyond the COP parameter is something I will always treasure, that cannot be measured and simply priceless. Sadly, series of consecutive injuries plagued his later career, but he absolutely put his country on the map, his sport in the headline and himself in the process. It is a terrible tragedy for the sport and the world to lose someone who really put out their heart and soul out there to maximise their every potential. An inspiration to many and will continue to do so in the years to come.

This is horrible.... Some thugs took his life because he tried to stop them... I'm stunned. Condolences to his family and friends.

I know Phil Hersh was really kind of a dick earlier today with a few of his tweets, but this is really a beautiful article that everyone should read: http://www.globetrottingbyphilipher...well-to-denis-ten-iconic-as-the-artist-on-ice

In particular, we get to hear from Frank, and thinking about Frank at 80 years old and finally retired and having to deal with the untimely loss of another of his skaters just makes me want to cry again.

There's a nice little story in there about how Frank and Denis separated after Denis skated his Sochi LP, because they figured he wouldn't win, so they could both just go do their own things and enjoy the rest of the evening's skating - when Frank realized that Denis was within medal range, he had to go to find him. Very cute.

I think I'm gonna wait a few months before actually revisiting Denis's performances.

ETA: If the ISU has any goodness in their hearts they will give a GP event (or JGP event) to Kazakhstan and name it after Denis. Or they can just rename Four Continents after him. Idk man. Something special. He was truly an ambassador for the sport for his entire country and I hope that is sincerely honored somehow by the ISU themselves.

I think my strongest memory of Denis is his Sochi Exhibition. At that time I thought it was an interesting and different ex, and that it was so nice that he paid homage to his country and his culture. In retrospect, that's what I'll always remember him for, sharing with us part of his history, bringing the eyes of the world to the country that he was so proud of.

I’m speechless that Denis has passed away. Denis was so universally loved by everyone, from fans to competitors, not once did we ever hear a single negative thing about him. He was joy and light in the skating world. What a horrible tragedy. I hope and pray his parents find strength but it will be a hard road for them.

I remember seeing him for the first time at 2009 Worlds long program. He lit up Staples Center like a firework and wowed us all. Who is that incredible phenom?!! You knew he was going to go far in life that day.

Over damned car mirrors...plastic and glass. SMH and crying.

His last competition in front of his home crowd
during 2017 universiade. That fantastic SP on a weird techno nutcracker.

This is just unbelievable! What an incredible loss for his family, country and for fans of skating everywhere. Godspeed and thank you, Denis!

I was away from the forum for the past few years as I had a baby after a difficult birth and looking after the little one just took over my life.
But this news was just too sad, too surreal, and too heartbreaking.
I had to come back here to find some kind of comfort in mourning together with fellow figure skating fans.
What a loss. What a tragedy.

From the Phil Hersh article:

I asked Carroll for his fondest memory of Ten. It turned out to be a recent one.

Carroll was not feeling well when Ten did his short program at the 2018 Olympics, and the coach decided to return home as soon as he learned Ten had not qualified for the next day’s free skate. U.S. Olympic officials arranged for a car to pick up Carroll from the athletes village at 3:30 a.m. and take him to the Seoul airport.

A few minutes before that, Ten and his mother met Carroll at his room, carried his bags to the car and said goodbye.

“They got up at that hour, and they weren’t going anywhere,” Carroll said, his voice cracking. “That was Denis. Sweet and kind.”

And an artist. The Artist on ice.

No words.
Rest in peace, Denis. Thank you for all that you have given us.
