Dmitri Aliev

I wouldn't put his situation into the same as Samarin's. At the last (or the last two) season, Samarin only had 4lz as his ultra-C's and the 4lz wasn't very stable either. Dima still has three types of quads in his arsenal. Among them, 4t and 4s are reliable, and the success rate of 4lz was decent. At the end of last season, he almost pulled out a 4 quad fs program in the RUSGPF. Considering he picked up 4s after 22 olympic season and regained 4lz only last season, it seems that his technical capabilities are still there or not peaked yet. In the past a few seasons, he always got to shape gradually and tended to do better in the second half of the season. This season, the knee injury prevented him from training at full capacity. Another factor is that adding the 4-th quad into his fs program seemed to me interfered his performance. Only he and his coaching staff can decide which makes better sense, 3 quads or 4 quads.

Obviously Dima got quite upset by the nationals results. But most likely it was more a spontaneous reaction as he is a sensitive and emotional person. It's not like nobody else wasn't struggling. Even the "younger" guys can't deliver consistently. It's pretty common among guys.

Also, Dima is a component skater and has a full package. He is the one who truly deserves the 2nd mark in the mountain of mushrooms. Whether it is fully awarded is another story.
He is such gem to watch

Unexpected and very cute.

Russian men played Secret Santa and here's a letter Zhenya S wrote for Dima:

Dima, about a year ago we had a very heartfelt conversation on the balcony after another event. And then you opened up to me not only as an athlete but also as a good person. I won't mention everything that was said then, but I want to tell you that you made the right choice by continuing your career. I am glad I saw your free skate this season. The Onegin program is a masterpiece. Keep on pleasing all the viewers. Best wishes for the New Year.

Not good Nats for Dima. I'm a bit afraid he will follow in Samarin's footsteps now and let young guys take over...
I think he's intented to stay for at least for some time. He's injured. He could miss the season or even retire. But he's competing because he wants to. He even took part in the RGP even though he didn't have to as he would get a bye to nationals.

I miss him! I think my favorite program of his was "Masquerade". His height and speed on the ice always gave him such an elegant look.

This is mine.... 2018 Euros. It's a shame the video doesn't show the kiss & cry reactions. So emotional...

From a new interview:
- Are you retiring, Dima?
- What for?
- Just "yes" or "no".
- Surely no. Why? I am planning to skate some more. I have a knee injury. I have already said in this season's interviews that I had accepted the fact that I will be skating this season with the injury. But even with the injury I have the desire and mood to go to the ice and skate. I used to say "to please the crowd", now I finally want to please myself primarily. To go and skate two clean programs. To show decent "Onegin" because this is a cool program and I want to show it clean.

I was curious about the term chemo for Aliev's treatment which is usually reserved for cancer. I learned that it's a completely different usage of the term and since TB was one of the first illnesses treated with chemicals, it is often still used. It does consiste in a 6 month treatment of different antibiotics and not what we nowadays think of when the word chemo is used. This being said, it's still a very difficult process and I wish Aliev all the best for his recovery. I miss his skating.

Comforting to know about that treatment but TB is tough. Hope he has good medical treatment and returns to good health.
