Dumb Laws listed by State

Most of those are just laws that are out of date. Take for instance Massachusetts' "It is illegal to frighten a pigeon". This goes back to the time when pigeons were hunted for food. People would shoot them in the parks. The law was designed against kids who would scare the pigeons thereby preventing others from shooting them.

West Virginia

It is legal for a male to have sex with an animal as long as it does not exceed 40 lbs.
Road Kill may be taken home for supper.

Talk about your strange dinner date:rofl: . And we wonder why more people don't settle here? I am happy to say I have never broken or taken advantage of either of these laws.

I don't even need to look at the list. I lived in Utah for 11 years. I KNOW I did many, many, MANY illigal things--and I'm dang proud of every one of them.

Great link all the same!

You can't shoot any game other than whales from a moving automobile.

 ......makes me oh so proud to be a native Tennessean! I have yet to come across any whales in this state (certianly while driving), but I will now be armed and ready if I do.

It is legal to gather and consume road kill

I actually remember when they passed this law. I can't believe they wasted time on such an issue in our state government, but I suppose I shouldn't be all that surprised. At least now I can continue to gather all those possum carcasses without fear of Johnny Law.....;)

OTOH, it used to be illegal to gather roadkill in VT. Considering you just wrecked your car hitting a deer, it seems a little harsh to then get fined for taking the meat.

Thanks for the listing.

I wonder how this works in the State of Washington?

When two trains come to a crossing, neither shall go until the other has passed.

I can't imagine a state government actually spending time debating over those laws, they're dumb, but funny. Look at some of Kentucky's laws.

*It's illegal to fish with a bow and arrow in Kentucky.
*It's illegal to fish in the Ohio River in Kentucky without an Indiana Fishing License.
*All bees entering Kentucky shall be accompanied by certificates of health, stating that the apiary from which the bees came was free from contagious or infectious disease.
*By law, anyone who has been drinking is considered "sober" until he or she "cannot hold onto the ground".

The second doesn't make sense considering that, coming from Kentucky, you don't cross state lines with Indiana until after you get off the bridge. ;)

Illinois laws

  • You may be convicted of a Class 4 felony offense, punishable by up to three years in state prison, for the crime of "eavesdropping" on your own conversation.
  • Law forbids eating in a place that is on fire.
  • It is illegal to give a dog whiskey.

"You may not pump your own gas in the state of Oregon." 'Tis true, but when it's only 30 degrees outside, it's a law I can surely live with.

Kentucky's funny laws actually make more sense than most!

In Alaska, it is legal to hunt (or would it be fish?) for pike and burbot with a bow and arrow .Tanana Basin fishing regulations (bow fishing on page 2).

The law about bees makes perfect sense. You control the spread of disease by being sure that you don't import sick animals or birds or insects into your state. Bees get sick, just like everything else does. Chart of Bee Diseases

And finally, about where the state line is-Boundary between Indiana and KentuckySo no matter where they put the sign, the boundary is at the low water mark. Generally, the river is somewhere between high and low, so if you're fishing in the river, you should have a license for both sides.

Now the law about not being drunk until you pass out--that's plain crazy.
