Jeffrey Chen Suspended By Safesport

It doesn’t seem like it’s certain Jeffrey was suspended for sexual misconduct—one rumor suggested verbal abuse of an ex-partner, which is also a serious allegation. Regardless, this is part of a concerning pattern of behavior and I hope all his former partners have support systems and that no further harassment occurs. I also hope that there continues to be accountability for abusive and unethical behavior in the sport.
It is doubtful it is for a non sexual issue as SafeSport is the primary agent for that.

According to SafeSport's website, the Center's toolkit identifies five categories of abuse and misconduct: Emotional misconduct, Physical misconduct, Bullying, Harassment, and Hazing. While most highly publicized figure skating SafeSport cases have been sexual abuse, there have also been suspensions for physical and verbal abuse. Suspensions for physical and emotional abuse seem more common in gymnastics. Coach Maggie Haney was suspended for verbal abuse and dangerous training practices. Peter Oppegard, figure skating coach, was suspended for physical abuse. Safesport deals with all kinds of child abuse.

I don't think SafeSport is limited to child abuse, either? My understanding was that the abuse/misconduct could be directed at adults and still fall under the remit of SafeSport? (but I'm not in the US, and might have misunderstood).

No, you are right. I do think it less likely for Safesport to investigate non-sexual abuse in cases where the victim is not a minor. But, there have been such cases. Dalilah Sappenfield was noted to have been verbally abusive to adult athletes and this is one of the reasons she received a lifetime ban. I just focused on child abuse in my post because that is the focus of SafeSport's website.

I get that they would investigate a coach or a person in a position of authority on suspicion of bullying or harrassment. When the accused is a skater, chances are high that it's related to sexual harrassment in my opinion. We'll see.

The rumour is he was verbally abusive to his previous partner. So I’ll wait until official finding are presented before jumping down that rabbit hole.
