Ekaterina Bobrova & Dmitri Soloviev

Thanks for the report Snow! Will you have video of the FD for us?!
Unfortunately, no. But there were a lot of people who filmed the dance. I'm sure someone will upload the video soon.

Thanks for sharing that with us!! How is Dima coping with everything? Is he fine? I've read that he still feel pain in his leg.
I'm just a little bit worried about that.

Yes, he said he still SOMETIMES feel the pain, but it's not sharp and he can easily skate with it.
But during both SD and FD it was absolutely not visible. He looked perfectly healthy. Maybe it's getting better with each day passing.

It's as if everyone else withdrew from the competition on purpose, to see what points Bobrova and Soloviev would receive :rolleye:

It is also Bobrova & Soloviev did not compete last year, so they needed to do 3 things:
1. Make sure their elements got the levels they planned (rules have changed significantly since Sochi)
2. Secure a place at Russian Nationals, since they did not compete last year and are not automatically included.
3. Perhaps try the changes to lifts that were suggested at the recent test skate.

The other teams did not have to compete; they did.

But yes, there may have been some strategic thinking on the part of the teams that withdrew. They may have not felt ready to compete with Katia and Dima just yet, based on what coaches saw at the test skate.

"Maybe we missed judges"

Gold medalists team tournament 2014 Olympic Games Yekaterina Bobrova and Dmitry Solovyov, missing half of the year because of injury partner, spoke at his first start, which was the stage of the Cup of Russia in Samara. After the competition Solovyov told columnist Sovsport. Ru Andrew Simonenko about feelings after his return, shared his version of how he and his partner managed to hire in any correspondence ahead of reigning world champion, as well as shared, why go with a beaver in Saransk.
- Dmitry, the first question is obvious - how was the long-awaited first start, which already had everything seriously - the judge, the assessment?
- Well, after all our first start, we believe Control rentals in Sochi, because there we went to the ice with a five-minute warm-up and acted on the draw. The only grade was not that we lacked. Here we feel much more confident and remember the old feelings, which came out once to the competition. And, of course, for us, the start was very important. Still, having passed such a long period, we had to feel the competitive nerve.
- Even though the fact that the opponents of the category of masters you have had only one pair of far inferior to you in class?
- Of course. Initially, we know that we will be judged strictly. Give us some concessions and put us some sky-high valuation was no sense because it would have just relaxed. We know that everything will be sue at the highest level, European and world championships. What would quibble in order that we may know something to still work and that even better. So a big plus for us that we have arrived in Samaria, and again felt the athletes.
- So, judging by estimates for the free dance, you have it straight skated very well, just got more points than the French Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron on victory for their FIFA World Cup 2015 in Shanghai?
- For ourselves, we drove really well, feels rental was a quiet, emotional. Perhaps the judges really liked our program, and they missed us, it is hard to say. Evaluation is really high. However, we know, is something we still have to work, we know that we are in this program change.
- And what does your "Anna Karenina" will change?
- The second half of the second support will be doing the combination. The first half will leave, and the second transition will do another. After supporting the rotation to pick up little steps. And after the "diagonal" we will find the steps may try other music. We want the ending turned out such acceleration. To cling to.
- I can not ask - how are you feeling as the operated leg?
- In general, normal. As I said, I can train and compete. And thank God. Those little pain that I have absolutely not interfere with riding.
- What other conclusion to make from Samara start?
- Probably, there will be changes in the costume of a long program. Trousers try to make dark, and the top will leave bright. In general, bring to mind the suits.
- What's on Further the start?
- It will be a "Challenger" in Saransk October 15-18. Right on the eve of Grand Prix in Canada. Use start in Saransk to slightly raise the rating at the same time it is necessary once again to test themselves for resistance. And then quietly go overseas.

Mostly clear, but what on earth is this about???

Why go with a beaver in Saransk.

Bobrova's last name can be translated in English as 'Beaver's'. That's actually her nickname, and their nickname in Russian community is Beavers.

I'm so glad so many people here like their FD. I actually thought I'll be the only one lol

They want to change Dima's costume for FD, the bottom will be dark colored.
They also will change something in their FD, add more tempo in the ending after diagonal step sequence, maybe even try different music cut, and they'll change transition for their second lift, between the two parts.
I'm against costume changing, and looking forward to other changes, I think they will make it even better!

I've watched their FD at Samara 5 times already. And each time I was equally moved. The ending pose is just so haunting.

Both Bobrova/Soloviev and Ilinykh/Zhiganshin has been assigned to the Mordovian Ornament. That will be very interesting competition.

Since it is a Challengers Series event, I assume the judging will be at least partially international, rather than just Russian judges?

Most likely yes. I hope tech panel will be international at least.

A couple more words from Dima: http://www.team-russia2014.ru/article/22461.html

He says they feel very nervous and 'stiff' when skating in front of public, while relaxed and free on trainings. He was worried before test skates at Sochi like never in his entire life. They're getting better, but they need more competitions to feel more relaxed and confident.
And he said that Zhuline is 'glad that SOMETIMES they skate clean on practices' And again he says about some little corrections in their dances, nothing concrete though.

Ok, well I have to admit I found the FD a bit on the tapioca pudding side when I first watched (a little safe, a little bland). But I've rewatched it several times and it is definitely growing on me. If you're going to go for a classic--dare I say classic Russian?--style skate, this is as good an example as one is likely to find. I do find the music a bit of a snoozefest (AK is all about the inability to control the passions and how easily they can be manipulated--and the music just lacks that passionate grandeur and sweep, but that's certainly not their fault). I would encourage them to add more tempo at the ending--it needs to build. This is precisely the story where you can pour the Dramuh! on thick! I love the circularity of the opening and closing poses (passion does make one blind). It does look like their posture has improved (I would still tie a wooden stick to their backs for at least some of their practice time if I was coaching them, but at least they've stopped the incessanthunching over they were prone to).

Ok, I'll say it here because if I say it in a main thread I'm likely to be set upon.

[Sotto voice] I like it so much more than I/K's FD (which I found to be SO! disappointing).

It's going to be a VERY interesting battle for positions 1 & 2 between B/S and I/K. I don't see any other team really challenging them for the top two spots (though Y/M is going to give both of them a run for their money--or should, if we could only keep political maneuvering out of it).
