Elena Ilinykh & Ruslan Zhiganshin

I don't really think it's worth it, better to conserve their energy to beat B/S in Saransk. They'll face W/P at CoR anyway, hopefully with some momentum, and then hopefully again at GPF.

I don't think they will challenge them for a win - although who knows at this stage. It depends how both couples will skate and which program the judges will like most - but I think the most important thing right now is to close the gap. That would be fantastic and a great start considering that is early.
Yes, I see what you mean.

I do wonder though if it's the best strategy for Russia to have both their teams compete so early against each other. As I said, competition is good, but it is early and regardless of which couple will win there it doesn't tell much which one will have the best season, or mid-season, until they do their GP's. Russia is in need to boost their teams, separately, as much as they can. Considering that they have lost one spot.
I agree. It actually surprised me when BS's participation in this event was announced.

Meanwhile, folks at the VK have voted for the best SD at the test skates in Sochi, with the following results:
IZ 61.7%
YM 14.5%
MK 9.3%
BS 5.6%
SB 3.7%
428 people have voted. 5.1% of them have abstained.

This also makes sense. Heck, it must be really hard to be a coach. I don't think they'll go to Finlandia, because it's too close to Saransk (8-11 and 15-18), but whatever they decide to do I wish them all the luck in the world.

I think it's also worth mentioning that to some extent, Kustarova sometimes sacrifices early success for long term benefits. Ruslena's programs are extremely ambitious, even for a team that has been together for more than a year and a half. So it's a testament to their skills that they're still skating those programs pretty well in September. And when March rolls around, they'll look very impressive.

Yes, that makes sense also. However, I do feel it's worth it because a) there is more competition in Finlandia and it's outside Russia. So for me, winning silver there it's more worth it than win Saransk, or get silver in Saransk. b) it's even better closing the gap with W&P precisely because they have to meet them in COR which is more important. Winning Saransk would be very good but what if they don't? Why face W&P and C&L at CoC and CoR as "second"? I agree, it's not an easy decision whatever they choose.

Maybe both B/S and I/Z wanted to skate in Saransk and in order to not being accused of any favoritism, the FED decided to send both.

Another question, what do you guys think of their two step sequences in the FD? It looked like Kustarova changed them quiet a bit compared to last season, which is quiet surprising since most teams keep their step sequences once they found a structure that allows them to get a level 3.

Well, since when Russian Fed cares of what they are accused of? Besides, IZ are RN champions after all.

I think it's a good decision. They are more difficult this season and need to up their game.

I want the Muppets for their gala program! I would totally love this and they have half of the choreo done already.

That hip hop version is soooo cool. Must be hard to transform that on Ice but I would like that very much.

It would be too cool, and funny. I could imagine both of them singing along and laughing at each other's antics :)

I was just coming to post the same thing!

He says they can be the leaders in Russia, even with the return of B/S. They have really become a pair, and you can see their desire to keep developing through all the new things they are trying. The SD is risky, and they will have to see how the judges take to it in the first international competitions. But it can be a vivid and memorable program. It's their idea and it fits them, and he thinks they can challenge the US and Canadian couples.

I really love their SD. Hope the judges will appreciate that program.

Their SD always brings a smile to my face; I love it. Even though the music may be risky, I think it fits perfectly with the waltz and March and has the qualities of those dances. Hopefully, the judges will love it too. It's not like Queen's is too out there and too abstract, well to me it isn't. Maybe the songs will spark good memories for the judges, and they will score Elena and Ruslan like they deserve.

No it's not. I see more risky G&P SD tbh. Yet I would've liked that program very much too if not for the selection of the music - Beatles in the beginning and the end - which I think doesn't really work.

The STL part is a very cute, fun waltz, much waltzier than other modern SDs. The only risk I see, is in the WWRY part, but they should be fine as long as they hit all beates and go out 100% when they perform that part.
