Elena Radionova

Russian figure skating fed have a series of skating events throughout the season which are different stage of Russian Cup. The final stage is in Feb. Sometimes the top skaters will do the earlier stages of Russian Cup to tune up for the session, but usually you won't see top skaters at the final stage of Russian Cup unless a World spot is up for grabs like now. It was a final stage of Russian Cup right after the Sochi Olympics were Tuktamysheva was injured before her great season last year. She was going for the spot on the World team that opened after Sotnikova decided not to go. I read somewhere that Skating Federation asked that both Yulia and Luza T go to the final stage so they can be considered for the World team.
I am sure I over,y simplified it, but that is basically it.

Thank you so much :thank:

Wow many of you will watch World's Live! :hap93:

I'd love to know what she was texting from the KnC. :dev3:

Maybe she's updating her mom ~~

Yes if she'd add red underneath instead it would fit the program a lot better!

whoever thought white would suit as an undercolor for black should be fired
Lenas new dress is so lovely, it was just missing something as it looked too " dry "

It's funny; while I would have had Elena first after both programs, a silver medal at Worlds would still be such a tremendous success that it's hard to be completely outraged. Given how Lipnitskaya and others have struggled in their "sophomore" seasons, it's so impressive to me that Elena's managed to maintain her level despite quite literally outgrowing her costumes. I'm so pumped to see her in Boston, no matter what the score ends up being, hopefully it'll be a fantastic performance.

this is her 3rd season ;)
but her breakout season was last years

Elena was a fighter today. I love watching her skate with such fierce determination. It's really amazing.

I'd love to know what she was texting from the KnC.

Liza, Yulia and Adelina, of course!

I'm a bit late to the party, but here are some thoughts from me, in no particular order.

1) I watched live at work today, and I managed not to jinx Lena again (well, ok, she had some rough landings, but no major mistakes), so HOORAY!!! Now I feel better about watching her live at Worlds! :agree:

2) I LOOOOOVE LENA'S NEW DRESS!! I WANT LENA'S NEW DRESS!!! Seriously, I was drooling. That dress doesn't even looking like a skating costume; she could totally wear it to the banquet and it would not look out of place (except maybe for the illusion fabric in the back). I do agree that it might look even better with a red under-dress instead of a white one though.

3) Yes, Lena had several rough landings on her jumps. However, I actually thought they looked better on the whole. She seemed to be jumping with more attack than I saw earlier in the season, and she seems to have that nice "snap" feeling back (see TEB 2014). That 3Lo-1Lo-3S was one of the best ones she's done in awhile, I think. I also thought that she seemed more free in the step sequence--yes, I could see the (reckless) abandonment. This gives me a lot of hope that she really is starting to settle into her new, bigger body.

4) Sadly, I am not too surprised that she lost. The base value of her jumps is higher I think (I haven't double-checked this, so don't quote me on it), but it is ALL ABOUT THE GOEs, and she lost a lot of points with the sloppy landings. Also, I give more weight to the live reports, so if people are saying she looked clumsy on her elements compared to Zhenya, I believe it.

5) Sigh, I think the "Titanic" program is doing her no favors whatsoever. I adore "Je T'aime" and I personally think her SP should beat Zhenya's, but she is really losing in the LP. Honestly, I kind of think that even Inna Goncharenko didn't expect Lena to be doing so well this season, so I feel like she thought, "let's let Lena skate to something she'll really enjoy because it's a lost season anyway." And now that Lena is actually in gold medal contention, you can see that Lena's program doesn't compare, no matter how much she sells it.

6) What really made me sad was to see how everyone started hating on Lena because she had an honest reaction in the secondary K&C. :sad21: *I* can totally understand why Lena was upset. Lena thought she had won, Zhenya CLEARLY thought she had lost, and then the opposite happened. People in the LP thread were noting that Lena doesn't seem to like Zhenya, whereas she was fine with Liza beating her, but I think it's something slightly different here. At Russian Nationals and Euros, Lena lost to someone younger than her for probably the first time in her career. (I'm not counting GPF because Lena made mistakes there.) Up until then, in probably every competition, she's beaten Zhenya, and every other skater younger than her. And then at Rostelecom, she beat Zhenya again AND she got higher PCS. Now, all of a sudden Zhenya has a huge PCS advantage on her. Of course she's bewildered, and thus upset.

It's different with Liza, because I think Lena always felt that Liza was older and more mature as a skater, so it made sense to her that Liza could, and maybe should, win.

If I were Lena, I would've done exactly what she did--I wouldn't want to cry tears of frustration in front of the cameras so I'd try to distract myself with my phone too.

I guess some people are surprised the Lena's not endlessly sweet and bubbly, but I guess I've been quite aware for some time that she's an iron soldier beneath that angel face.

And thankfully, I think Lena is going to put some of that righteous anger to good use--I think it WILL push her to work even harder.

7) It was really interesting to me that Averbukh was saying that either Elena or Zhenya would win Euros, instead of calling Zhenya the clear front-runner. I am probably reading too much into things, but it made me think that perhaps he is trying to be nice because he really wants to work with Lena again, and that would probably be great for Lena. I've loved all of his programs for her. But maybe there are other choreographers she should try...?

8) Not to be pessimistic, but I think the rink size is going to be a major issue for Lena at Worlds. She was already almost crashing into the boards here; the TD Garden rink will be even narrower. I think they should seriously consider modifying the width of her practice rink at CSKA so that she can adjust ahead of time.

9) I did think it was heartwarming to see Lena give/get really nice long hugs from the other girls during the medal ceremony. To me, it seemed like Zhenya and Anna both understood why she was upset and were trying to make her feel better (Anna even patted her head). There didn't seem to be any hard feelings. :agree:

10) Overall, I would agree with ovafanboy1; it's kind of amazing that Elena has had a pretty great season. I certainly was expecting the worst. Though in another way, it IS kind of a lost season, because it doesn't seem like she can beat Zhenya this year. However, if Anna and Polina Edmunds are any example, I think next year we should hopefully see some major improvements in Lena's gracefulness; once she gets more comfortable being big!

this is her 3rd season ;)
but her breakout season was last years

Even though it is her third season at some Senior events it is only her second season that she is really fully Senior eligible so I think this still considered to be Sophmore season for her. That first season she was not old enough for the big events like Worlds or the Olympics

I love Radionova's new FS dress too XD Like Batsuchan mentioned, it doesn't look like a skating costume, and wouldn't look out of place in any gathering that needs one to wear a gorgeous dress! I'm not too bothered by the white underdress - my only nitpicky part is that the hem of the white underdress could be either laced up or not too.. 'square' so it won't be too obvious that it's a flat, plain underdress underneath a gorgeous black lace dress... if that makes sense XD

I love both girls. I don't think Lena was robbed. Zhenya's Lp was better, despite the fall. But I agree Lena should have won the SP. I love her honest reaction in K&C.:luv17:

Her behavior at the waiting room was understandable. Back to their Junior days, I noticed that Lena was somewhat out of place even though she was winning against Zhenya/Sima~~ maybe it all starts there~~~~ XD

I guess I've been quite aware for some time that she's an iron soldier beneath that angel face.
Yes! She is! :)

I'm one of the people who think Elena was robbed of the gold medal. While Evgenia's programs are better, Elena skated out there like a star and she had two nearly clean performances. Even if it's not by a big margin, she should have won. So I find her reactions okay. :)

But anyways, Euros is over now. I'm excited for Worlds. The US rinks are small, but she was able to manage in SA last season. However, her jumps (especially the 3Lz-3T) have gotten so much more closer to the boards. Hopefully she can control it at Worlds.

Yes, I agree. I think Elena and Adelina have always been friendly b/c they both skate at CSKA, and they also seem friendly with Yulia and Liza, along with some of the older girls (Ksenia, Elena I, etc.) I think Evgenia and the younger girls (Sima, Polina, etc.) are closer. I think Anna P gets along with everyone but isn't necessarily closer with anyone either. It's natural among girls that age- or any age, really- to form groups like that, probably much more so than guys. I don't think there is any bad blood between any of the girls though. And I don't think Lena's behavior was anything other than a very honest, disappointed reaction in K&C. I'm happy she didn't feel the need to be smiley or happy, when she was probably very broken and bitterly disappointed inside. I know Yulia has been criticized in the past for seeming cold or pissed off after poor skates, and I don't think Yulia should have been criticized either. These girls have worked so hard, and are under a tremendous amount of pressure, both from themselves and from their countries, so to have people judge or criticize them for their post-competition reactions is pretty ridiculous.

And yes to the iron soldier comment! I think most of the Russian girls are like that- they have to be to survive the system. And Lena has been pretty clear in her interviews: she wants to win everything!

Thanks, Batsuchan for your thoughtful commentary! I mostly agree with everything you said. I'm kind of disappointed at Inna for choosing the Titanic program though, and from the interviews, it does sound like she chose the music, and Elena just happened to love it as well. I mean, even if it is going to be a rough year for Elena, she should know better than to choose such a cheesy piece of music, esp with those awful voice-overs. I just wonder if maybe Titanic is better received in other countries so she didn't realize it was an awful choice?
I'm also surprised Averbukh didn't just come right out and say Medvedeva would be winner. TBH, after he trashed Yulia when she didn't go with his programs for her, I figured he would trash Radionova too when she went with Morozov. I have no idea what the politics are in Russian figure skating, and frankly, don't really care for them. I do like Averbukh's programs for Evgenia though- they are quite beautiful. He also did a good job with Elena in 2013-2014.

Finally, LOL at Anna patting her head. I haven't been able to watch the medal ceremony and probably won't- just hate seeing Lena so disappointed!

I neither hate nor love Elena or Evegenia's LP. I honestly just hate how Medvedeva's programs are structured, but more than anything that arm above her head on pretty much every jump is past the stage of getting old. It makes her skating not enjoyable to me. I have watched her live and on tv and just don't like it. It's effective for her because it gets points on that GOE, but it's not good to me. I hope the ISU places limitations on both the backloading of jumps and even more so the use of the tanos before this becomes figure skating. Her tano jumps could be a good drinking game. Take a shot of your favorite drink whenever she does a jump with the arm over the head.

Elena did seem to keep in real in the K&C and the secondary place they have the top three sitting while competitors skate. Who come up with the idea to make them sit there like that? That should go! if someone had a disappointing moment, they should be able to do it in peace without the expectation that they put on a show or face criticism from people that they are somehow poor sports.

just a question out of nowhere :p does anybody know if Lena has a ask profile and if yes does anybody can share this link ?
