To be quite honest, if anything, this makes me love Liza even more: proof that she is human, a woman just like me.

I do not know if skaters can take the pill - I imagine so, I see no reason they couldn't - but even with that and panadol or other painkillers, there are still sometimes days when all you want to do is curl up in a ball with a hot pack. Inconvenient timing for her of course, but with this many comps she's done this season, it's not surprising!

True, true. When I first read that tweet I felt like had it been me I would have been thinking "Oh thanks for telling the whole world my personal business like that!" Hope Mishin got permission first (heh, nice rhyme...)

But I always do wonder about female athletes, although apparently physical activity can lessen cramps? But that's probably mild physical activity rather than competitions. I for one would be more worried about having it show up right in the middle of a program, worst day ever. :jaw:

On topic though, good luck with the 3A for Worlds Liza! :D
 
I am relieved to know Liza's true reason for the withdrawal, but at the same time, I think it is a little embarrassing to discuss publicly something so personal about this young lady.

Well, apparently Mr Mishin wasn't saying at first - I suppose people were just at him and prodded and pushed, and at last he went: All right, fine then, this is the reason!

I was just thinking that - it's quite probable that they thought, we'll just call it abdominal pain and we'll get away with it - right up until the panic of "Is Liza injured?!" started!

Ah, poor Liza, to have her body's business out in public like that - but at least we know she's not hurt.
 
A tennis player openly talked about how dizziness and nausea due to her period affected her loss at the Australian Open. There were a few interesting write-ups about it being a taboo topic in sports and she was praised by media and other female players on talking about it and opening up a discussion on the unique challenges female athletes face. I understand feeling embarrassed about it but maybe we shouldn't have to be given that it is a natural thing to happen and maybe then people can understand how it can affect their performance.
 
I remember Tessa talking to Scott in their TV show about it (something about 4 more cycles to go until Sochi .... he seemed to look at the ceiling). I don't think that taking the pill is a good solution for female athletes, as it can affect performance, body weight and body fat.

Soooo I wonder how females athletes handle the... Eh... When it's those days in competitions???

Us guys aren't good with "women's issues".

I think I preferred it when I thought it was a dicky tummy caused by something she had eaten... :slink:

Why not? We have to put up with bloke problems often enough. See: the mentions of guys' junk in the Four Continents threads. Do we really need to know how you go about making sure all that stays in place? Nope, but it'll get talked about anyway. But ohhhh noooooo we can't talk about ladies' problems that cause genuine physical issues and introduce several nasty complications into the competition factor. (But guys will keep using it as a joke if we're legit peeved about something.)

Ahem, just saw this on What's New and this caught my eye. Well some don't. Just google "Heather Watson Australian Open". Some were critical when she tried to explain the reason of the loss, without people taking into account that not all women have it the same. Sure all ladies athlete probably have it but some seem to have it worse than others.

I think that is the last I'm talking about this here. :laugh:
 
I know plenty of athletes that actually prefer competitions/races during certain days of their periods because pain levels are easier to deal with. One great example is Leontien van Moorsel, who rode the hour world record in cycling while on her period in 2003. The record is still standing. :)
After the first day I myself feel like I can handle so much more physically too. But of course, this won't be the same for everyone.
 
I recently read that sometimes gymnasts don't get their periods until they retire. I was so shocked. I wonder if it makes harder for a gymnast to get pregnant...
