Elizaveta Tuktamysheva

It might be my computer, or just the nature of Dailymotion, but I found the clip rather 'jumpy'. So I downloaded it through http://convert2mp3.net , in case anyone here can find that link helpful, and the result was, shall we say, "smooth skating". Liza is so talented at the sultry numbers!
It's not your computer, it's Dailymotion. Yeah, Liza's great with this type of music. :)

Please don't use this word here.

Whilst I do share your sentiments, just remember that English isn't the first language for everybody on this forum.

Sugarpova's first language is Russian, so she probably didn't realise that that word might offend some people.

They are so damn pretty though...how is that offensive in any way?

I would suspect they were reading it as the literal interpretation of religious condemnation, rather than the more widely (informal) use that has little to do with that.

You know, it took me a long while to work out where the religion came into it! Just shows you how much interest I pay to all things religious!

Nah, I when I said I shared Sweet Dream's sentiments, I was just talking more in general about pointing out words that some people may find offensive. Because, as we all know, this is an international forum. And whereas in some cultures a particular thing may be acceptable, in other cultures it may not.

Personally, I don't have a problem with people using that particular word. (For goodness sake, after hearing the song mentioned on a quiz show a few days ago, I haven't been able to get "Unpretty" by TLC out of my head! And that word features in it!) But, I know that some people do. So, it's better to be on the cautious side.

We are a community on here, so it's nicer when we all live in harmony. :agree:

My 1st language is Russian, but even I've read/heard this damn thing a lot of times so that I can make an assumption that it is more a figure of speech, quite a slang one but still:confused:

hmm & 'For God's sake' may be offensive too?

(btw recently I was informed that 'gypsy' apparently is a bad word also....really that was a bizarre! thing to me b/c here its widely used like in 'gypsy music' 'gypsy clothes' etc etc Nothing condescending about it)

It was just an episode of tea-time quiz show "The Chase". During the multiple choice round, one of the questions was:

Which of these songs was a 2008 hit for Girls Aloud?

A. "Ugly"
B. "Unpretty"
C. "Untouchable"

And although I like all 3 of those songs, for some reason "Unpretty" by TLC was the one that got stuck in my head!

I know, it's amazing how things that are innocent enough in some countries/cultures are seen as offensive in others.

But, that is what I like about this forum. It is a way of getting to know people from different countries and cultures, and getting to know more about those countries and cultures.

By the way, this is WAY off topic, but given what I just wrote, I thought you might enjoy reading this page that I came across yesterday (OK, so Estonian Pairs skater Maria Sergejeva shared it on Facebook!):

You would be surprised...a few years ago Tourism Australia made a rather ill-advised ad. The television commercial enumerated the best qualities of Australia, the beautiful scenery etc, and at the end, a beautiful girl in a bikini on a pristine white-sanded beach looked down the camera and said - "So where the bloody hell are ya?"

The ad was exported - and in England, of all places, it was considered to contain foul language and could only be played after nine o'clock at night alongside all the sex ads and so forth! Most Australians hated the line in the ad just for its cringeworthiness (nearly as bad as "I'll put a shrimp on the barbie"), but man oh man, did we ever go to town mocking the English for considering the word "bloody" to be foul language - especially since they'd invented it (we'd just hijacked it!).

We had to put $1 in my mother's curse piggy bank if we said"damn" when I was a little girl.

When I was in my twenties, living in northern Vermont, it was not uncommon to hear some person who had done something like hitting his finger with a hammer, say something like,

"Goldarn it, Jesum Crow, this ******* piece of **** hammer is a real *******.

The verbal habits of Puritans lasted a long time after their religion became less universal in New England.

Sex words, body part words, and other words commonly considered as bleep-worthy swearing on US TV were OK. Taking the Lord's name in vain was forbidden in the 10 Commandments, and was not OK.
