Hm, possibly. 3,000 feet is higher than normal.

ETA: The jetlag and early practice probably played a bigger part though as someone else said... that's what I get for responding before I've read all the posts. :)

Just realized that Liza is the first reigning World Champ to skate so strongly -- let alone medal -- at the next year's Grand Prix since Yuna in 2009. Mao is the last to skate a Grand Prix season after winning Worlds the season before in 2010 and didn't medal at either of her assignments. Miki, Carolina, Yuna, and Mao again (2014) all skipped the Grand Prix (two of them skipping the season entirely).

After the way she skated last season, it's easy to assume Liza would just keep up that same kind of momentum, but with those stats in mind, it's just as easy to marvel at just how fast she's had to turn it around and how -- three competitions in -- she's starting to show signs of her WC-winning self.

That is interesting. I never followed ladies much before the last year or two, so I didn't realize that. Definitely a testament to Liza's strength.

That is interesting trivia.. If we trace further back two years, in 2008 and 2009, the reigning world champions, who also happen to be first-time world champions like Liza (namely, Mao and Yuna!) both won the GPF. Let's see what happens this year :2thumbs:

Looking ahead to Bompard, it'll be a showdown between Liza and Gracie, who had very similar first Grand Prix outings (SP errors, winning the FS). Yulia and Kanako will likely fight for the bronze (perhaps Daleman if she can land her jumps). With two weeks between SC and EB, don't know whether it'd be wise to do a competition in between. Hoping Canada shook off most of the doubts and doubles. ;)

Mao was also a world champion in 2008 and won 2nd place in TEB the following season, 1st place in NHK and won the GPF (08-09). But oh my, incredible comeback for Liza. She's skating almost perfectly, just needs to improve that 3A a bit and she's ready for anything. So impressive. By the way, is she planning on bringing back her 3lo? Her BV will be even higher with it.

I am thrilled with Liza's LP comeback and her tenacity. I think this is the moment she needed to confirm she's in no danger of slipping into the 'headcase' category. I hope she now focuses on working on her spins, and above all, staying healthy till TEB. She'll need to be clean and well-performing when she faces Gracie. Fingers crossed, Liza!

Btw. it was the first time Liza did all the jumps in LP WITH 3a! Before she made it at WTT with fantastic 3a but there she did not do all the rest jump layot afterwards. Of course, this 3a did not have a good landing, but it indeed was a lot overrotated :) (which shows that for Liza quad is very realistic). And it is only at the beginning of the season. Congratulations, Liza! :cheer:

Liza's fans were waiting for her FP with medicines in one hand and a bottle of alcohol in anoter. So stressful. I can't imagine what kind of nerves this girl has.

This exhibition was originally supposed to be her SP choreographed by Lambiel. Probably good that she and Mishin changed it - it could have been a one too many competitive program to 'I put a spell on you' this season. But as an exhibition it is quite good for Liza.

Oh really? That explains a lot. I'm really glad there's not another SP to that song, honestly. Not my favorite song. But this explains why people have been talking about how her SP doesn't look like it's been choreographed by Lambiel... because it wasn't!
 
Pretty impressive comeback win for Liza at Skate Canada, after a disappointing short. Heart of a champion, right there! :luv17:
