There is something I don't understand and can't figure out from this thread regarding 'skater quotas', and it is this: whatever happened to the former business of 'five full flights' for every figure skating discipline? I can find only 29 each for Men's and Women's instead of 30 each, 23 Ice Dance couples instead of 25, and 19 Pairs couples instead of 20. Have all skaters actually been named who will be in individual events but not the team event? I'm tired of trying to read through this thread and figure it out!

Don't even get me started on how foolish and unfair I feel are the ways in which so-called 'teams' are scored. Let's just say I disagree with said scoring methods and don't consider the 'team' event of much importance for the skaters.
For that matter, it's a shame that figure skating in 'The Olympics!' is granted such a place of prominence when the World Championships is a far better testing and performance ground for the finest figure skating. I wonder if anyone else here prefers it, as I do?
I think the cut to one spot less than full flights might have to do with the (remote) possibility that the host country won't qualify an entry in the usual way, and will be granted a spot for free. By cutting the usual spots by one, a "free" spot for the host wouldn't push them into an additional flight. This year the International Olympic Committee cut Men and Women from 30 to 29.
Ice Dance and Pairs were already cut to 23 and 19 for 2022 Olympics.
They are IOC decisions to make room for new sports or disciplines without increasing the number of entries.
The Team Event skaters must be drawn from the individual events entries for countries with individual events entries. There are up to 5 additional quotas for Team Event to complete uncompleted teams (this year used as follows: 2 for Japan Ice Dancers, 1 for British Man, 2 for Polish Ice Dancers). These 5 athletes (Utana Yoshida/Masaya Morita, Edward Appleby, Sofia Dovhal/Wiktor Kulesza) will only compete in the Team Event because they are not qualified for individual event.
South Korea won't have a pair in the Team Event either.
I am pretty sure that this is what it is all aboutI think the cut to one spot less than full flights might have to do with the (remote) possibility that the host country won't qualify an entry in the usual way, and will be granted a spot for free. don't get me startedThis doesn't explain why dance is shorted by 2 entries. What does the IOC or ISU have against dance? It's a mystery to me.
your memory is probably more to be trusted than mine in general especially with 2018 which was a very traumatic experience for me and still the best everBy the way, something odd did happen with the pairs entries for the Olympics in Korea. As I recall, North Korean qualified a pair, but didn't confirm, so were replaced, but then wanted/expected to come, were considered as Korea's host team, and were allowed to come in the end. I believe the cutting down of spots started after that incident.
You're right. The North Korean athletes weren't considered host spots but were described on Wikipedia as "wild-card" spots. They were extra athletes negotiated between the hosts and the IOC.our memory is probably more to be trusted than mine in general especially with 2018 which was a very traumatic experience for me and still the best everbut I think you got this one wrong because Korea did have a pairs team in 2018, with the lovely Alex Kam
so Petya was arrested because he was carrying too much weed...Daniel smoked it though
There is no number 3 team however, Kelly Ann and Loucas would only be able to participate in the team event if Deanna and Max pull out of pairs as well and are flown in early enough. Right now, Canada cannot send Kelly Ann and Loucas to the games as only the skaters from individual events can participate in the team event. I doubt that Deanna and Max will withdraw early enough for that to happen, the way things have been shared so far, with daily monitoring of the injury.Just read that Deanna and Max Canadian pairs have withdrawn from the Team Event due to injury sustained while training in Quebec. Trent and Lea will be placed on the team event with the #3 team being ready in case of need for the FS. Such a shame for them and Team Canada.

My version : Lea and Trennt are doing both parts of the team event (if Canada gets that far). Kelly Ann and Loucas will replace Deanna and Max in the individual event if Deanna and Max are unable to skate then and withdraw early enough. There is no number 3 team however, Kelly Ann and Loucas would only be able to participate in the team event if Deanna and Max pull out of pairs as well and are flown in early enough. I guess I meant the team that came in 3rd in Canada and that they are the substitutes for the pairs. There are several days before the individual event so here's hoping Deanna is able to skate. I'm sure the skaters are ready in the event they're called upon. Fingers crossed. There is no number 3 team however, Kelly Ann and Loucas would only be able to participate in the team event if Deanna and Max pull out of pairs as well and are flown in early enough.
