Extraordinary and unconventional programs

Every season I see some very innovative programs, so it’ll make for an extremely long list if I start with the 1980s.

Exactly! However the rules have changed, a lot of skaters in all disciplines have had success being innovative

Exciting, nice but not original :) We will see it more and more on shows!

Maybe you're right. That performances themselves or fluorescent costume are not original, but still deserve to enter into the extraordinary and unconventional category in my opinion. :) I'm also not a big fan of ice shows or exhibition programs except that my all-time *and* retired favorites featured shows, so I may be much less exposed to ice shows than you. You can introduce such original and innovative programs to us.

Ok, Ok ;)

As far as this previous season goes, both the SD and FD from Gilles/Poirier are unique. I know the FD has already been mentioned

I thought Mikhail Kolyada's SP and LP were unique this season as well.

Also, Savchenko/Massot LP was unique with the song choice and choreo.

I loved Piper and Paul's free dance this year despite a lot of fans saying they were trying too hard to be original and quirky. Especially the second piece of music, that was my favourite part. My opinion is that there was some wuzzrobbing happening at worlds, I thought they should've been higher than 8th. :( Maybe backlash for not being "traditional" in ice dance terms...

I'm hoping this doesn't discourage them from staying original with their programs. I know Carol Lane, their coach, has talked about how important it is for them to stick to what they want to do.

I totally agree with all of the examples. I also think many of Savchenko/Szolkowy's programs were very unique and unconventional.

Definitely agree with you. Pink Panther specifically comes to mind. That might either be because of the costumes, or the fact that that was their last program.

Javier Fernández in 2010-1 season, "been there, did that": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pvRVfmnoVo

The concept and choreo was pretty much the same - Javi used rumba instead of tango in combination with the Russian cartoon music (almost exactly the same cut for that section). The clothes with outrageous colours, too... True originality is so hard to achieve these days ;)

Wow you're so right :slink: Hadn't seen his programs from that long ago. Now I'm not sure if his LP has been done before, but I quite enjoyed the Nightmare Before Christmas theme and his playfulness with it.

I think that unique image attributes largely to the costumes and choreography. The music was loved as an exhibition number, and they recycled the program with a shorter cut. At first, I was shocked at the daring color usages when they revealed the program during the 2010-11 season, but became to think that the costumes fit the concept well. Aliona's stealthy movements like a stray cat in the opening was cute and unforgettable.

Sammyott - Kolyada did better with the FS, I think. I liked him, though hopefully they will be able to incorporate the major elements better into the choreo in the future - now the choreo stops well before almost every jump...

Agreed.

I'm sure the news that part of last year's SD will be made into a compulsory dance is a good sign and motivator to keep on doing what they're doing.

I also hope the return of Tessa and Scott will be motivation for Piper and Paul to continue with their originality - standing out in the immense talent we see in the top of Canadian ice dance is vital in their path to 2018.

Couldn't agree with you more. I'm really excited to see what they do this year. Especially what music they decide to use. This year's SD is a perfect example of the importance of their music selection. Everything fell into place when they got rid of the classical music.

It did! Not to mention it justified the Sargent Pepper costumes. People seemed to back off on the costume critique after the switch. ;)

Haha you're so right! I also think it helped that they debuted the better (more cohesive) program at worlds. It added that wow factor. I was just mad that I had to watch it a few days later because NBC didn't have their stuff together and there were technical difficulties during their SD! :angry2:

I'm still seriously bummed out that they placed 5th in the SD but then 8th overall after the FD.

:ddevil: wuzzrobbed!
