Figure skating costumes: Behind the glitter and sequins

Another wardrobe malfunction (or defect): 2008 Worlds; Maxim Trankov and Maria Mukhortova, he apparently didn't try his costume on before their LP or it was washed and it shrank or something.. but they stopped mid-program and he had to have the sleeve cut apart because it was cutting off circulation to his hand:

^^^^Which I have a question - do they not have 'dress rehearsals' in practice or something? I mean they were lucky that the judges let them re-start their program.

First of all people need to stop listening to commentators who don't know what's going on.

It wasn't a costume problem it was his shoulder. It was injured and his arm started to swell, the costume cut off his circulation. They weren't allowed to re-start the program, they picked it up where they left off as per the rules.

No skater ever goes out on competitive ice with out trying a run through with the costume first.

Apologize if this is OT, because this "accident" was not caused by an original costume defect

2009 Cup of China. Nobunari Oda forgot to zip up his pants (he confirmed it was not a costume problem, just a carelessness) and his underpants could be noted (starting from 2:10 more or less, after he did some funny knee movements and then again twice or 3times later).
Later he explained that he was not aware when skating and when he was told, he felt shocked.

Well if the costume was cutting off circulation then it was a costume issue. Especially since after they cut up the sleeve he was able to move his hand around and get circulation back and finish the program. And I should have been more clear when I said they restarted the program, I didn't mean restart from the beginning but restart at all.

I think all of Kaetlyn Osmond's costumes show too much butt. I don't know if its intentional or just poor fitting but they all ride up. I find it distracting and in poor taste. I hope that this year whoever sews her costumes finds bottoms that fit her. It also calls to mind Mishkutunick's ill-fitting bottoms ( I know I have that spelling wrong) I realize that in pair skating sometimes it just happens but her's started out too small and we had to look at her butt the entire program.

Yes, funny i googled pictures of Kaetlyn and google gave me "Kaetlyn Osmond a**" as a suggestion. :bang: And i certainly don't google butts all the time. Never i should say...
Another that has weird cut on her panties is Mirai.

I don't get what was immodest about Yulia's spins. I mean u don't see anything. Yes her crotch is wide open, but that is what happens when u are flexible like that... even if she had black tights it's wide open.

I'm blind.. :bang: i didn't see anything in the video. Also, if it's underpants who cares. Had he not been wearing anything under then.. well..:popcorn::rofl:

It is not that noticeable, honestly I think what you are seeing is his shirt some nice animal print undies would have been more fun. And as far as who cares, well a skater who had something similar might care. To me this is not about doing something wrong, more like pointing out that stuff does happen, and it can happen to anyone. I think it is all in good fun. Every man on the planet has forgotten their fly at least once, this just happens to be on a more public stage. But it is still something people can relate to. It is good to laugh with one another, I don't think anyone is laughing at him here.

It did seem like the camera(s) were not trying to focus on it, so good for them.

Well if the costume was cutting off circulation then it was a costume issue

So would it be a costume issue if his shoulder was fine? Of course not, it would have been fine therefor, it wasn't a costume issue.

I'll try to say it differently since you don't seem to understand.

Trankov was nursing a shoulder injury for weeks, he re-injured it during the skate and his arm swelled up. It would be no different if a skater hurt their knee and needed to cut the pants a the knee to relive pressure. Or if a skater hurt their ankle and needed to take the skate off. Does this mean the pants and skates don't fit? Certainly not, injury caused the problem, not the costume. The only way around it is to skate naked.

The problem is, the Eurosport commentators assumed it was the costume that was too tight in the arm not realizing it was an injury, and without finding our the real issue, people took that info and ran with it. Yet another problem with commentators.

Same thing with Oda, his costume was fine, it was his mind that failed, not the costume. Thank goodness he didn't know about it.

When I see feathered costumes, I always imagine the feathers falling off and sticking to the ice. Does anyone know of any instance where this happened?

It happened to I/K in the team event at the Olympics, didn't it?

Sorry, I don't remember at which event exactly, but yes, a feather once fell off Ilinykh's swan costume, and caused a costume deduction.

Article about men FS's sexy costume: http://www.thewire.com/culture/2014...-history-mens-figure-skating-costumes/357084/

Jason Brown... a sexy pirate???

I am 90% sure that sexy pirate was not what he/Kori/Rohene/his costumer had in mind with Riverdance. But I bet it would make him laugh. Though if you read the article, technically they classed it as the "sexy peasant" variant of the "sexy pirate" category. I have to admit, that v-neck was rather deep!

I just read down the rest of the article and noticed they put Max's Tron costume in the "sexy skeleton" section and described it as "more Tron than Nightmare Before Christmas". Well duh folks, the music WAS Tron, did you not watch the program?

Re Jason and Riverdance:

BTW, I think Jason should have received his EDI award (the "statuette," so to speak) at Champs Camp.

Re Max and Tron:
:agree: I was wondering what the heck the author was thinking.
But I do like the accompanying photo of Max in his Tron costume. http://cdn.theatlantic.com/newsroom/img/posts/2014/01/AP418839098759/059032feb.jpg

Yes, great pic! I loved how literal the costume was. I didn't realise how literal until Tron: Legacy was on TV not that long ago and I stumbled across it one evening. The costume is practically identical to the costume in the movie. I was so into the music that I was extremely disappointed when the main character walked on screen and it was, in fact, not Max.

I've always wondered how the girls keep their foundation and lipstick from coming off during a program. My lipstick is gone in the 30 min between my home and work and my foundation is gone by lunch. All I'm doing is sitting at a desk, yet they can manage to keep it on while spinning and sweating.
