Figure Skating in Australia

The results overall have also been interesting. What has caught your eye in particular

Was expecting Ice Storm to take Gold this year, especially when they showed up with 6 boys. Looked at their results this season and they won Clubs and the short at States?? (Could be wrong). They ended up last by 25 points. Same goes to Majestic Ice who was 2nd in the previous year by 25 points, now won by 8 points. Increase of 33 points compared to the competition in one year? Did IceSkateers Elite skate very badly? Must have.

If someone could link Junior and Senior videos in here that would be good! I missed some.

Days 1 & 2 of the live stream were when the synchro events took place. Sadly, the videos are not cut.

Is there a schedule somewhere? I keep looking at the results but it's an awful lot of results to be checking when I don't know what events are when.

Edit: Wait, never mind. I just found it. Didn't realize the competition had its own website; I was checking Australian fed's main page. Oops!

Wow, what a disaster skate for Holly. I just want to give her a big piece of cheesecake or something and a fluffy kitten. :ghug: Quite honestly I can't believe she eked out a first place... even in the free! But still, she wins by 11 points, so congratulations! :hap85:

Edit: and a big congrats to Jordan Lazarus, Amelia Jackson, and a few other girls that had excellent skates and placed very well. Congrats girls!

Yeah, that was hard to watch. We knows she is so much better than that. Better to have a bad free skate now than at an international event.

Great job from Jordan- She looks like she can progress to some of the triples soon.

Appalling scoring an insult to all the other skaters

The ice dance scoring was under control. Thanks to an international referee and technical controller keeping the levels under control.
And an ice dance seminar to remind the judges about things to look for.

Some thoughts on today.

If you only look at the fall column Holly winning is not a great look, but her base value was absolutely out of this world and totally incomparable to anyone else. She won on base value alone IMO. Jordan, who came second, did not even attempt a triple in the FS and Amelia's were both short on rotation. That said, a shout-out to Amelia, who must be a battered and bruised young lady tonight but one heck of a gutsy fighter. I'd have been down for the count after the first horror fall in the Jr FS; three later and she was still finishing her Senior SP with a smile (albeit a pained one).

Brooklee and Kailani were absolutely magnificent. I do agree with the way they are after the SP. Kailani lost levels but also, Brooklee's overall whole performance had something just a little bit...more. She really felt every nuance of that music and I was overjoyed to see her skate so well. What a battle it will be between these two ladies tomorrow!

Brendan was also magnificent. He looked really relaxed too. The 4S and the 3A were absolute money and he even found a way to make his minor error on the combo look intentional. He was really into the program, it was amazing. Andrew's SP remains stunning, beautiful and moving, and he skated very well - only a stumble on the combo but he really uses that music well. James was also great but I thought he was probably a bit tired, things weren't quite as crisp. Will be interesting to see if he or Andrew finishes higher tomorrow.

All the dancers were outstanding, IMO. The rhythms this year seem to really suit our guys. The programs were all great.

Thank you for your great recap.

well a very interesting observation in the junior ladies except that Amelia Jackson only fell once (not three times) and clearly should have won the LP from what I saw on you tube . There is no possible way based on that performance, Holly and Jordan should have received such high pcs in comparison to Jackson. If they are judging based on base value this should have been reflected in the PCs for Jackson as well who landed two clean 2A and attempted two triples as well as very clean combination jumps in the back end of the program. Jackson's horror fall was no where near as bad as Harris horror skate and some of the calls on her triples were questionable.

It will be ecxiting to watch the senior ladies and I hope Amelia does well. Tough gig to do two levels and good luck to James Min. Im not sure why they were skating both - does anyone know? I think he will come 2nd.

ISA has no interest in placing Amelia Jackson 1st, no matter how anyone skates. How she places will never reflect how she skates.

Scores aside, placings overseas are not the same as placings in Australia as politics and egos will always play a big part in the most pathetic ways. Skaters, officials and judges will admit to that, and they have.

Amelia had one horror fall in her Junior FS, another in the warmup for the Senior SP and another in the Senior SP itself, the last one clearly hurt her and she got up grimacing. I was not surprised to see she had withdrawn today. I hope she will be all right because she did skate very beautifully. But sorry, no, Amelia should not have won the free skate and nor should anyone other than Holly Harris have won the Junior ladies. She was obviously on another level from everyone else there. Amelia and Jordan skated beautifully, but Holly blew everyone away. Yes, she fell four times and had a time deduction. She also rotated a LOT of triples, and harder ones than anyone else was trying. It is the fault of the IJS that her points still racked up, not the judges.

I imagine they are skating both because they are age-eligible for both. The rules permit it.

Nevertheless, what an end to a very busy figure skating week for us Aussie skating fans.
The nationals had overall some great skating, and some of the younger skaters displayed potential.

Something that all the skaters will want to work on is enduring and not giving up in the Free Skate. Struggles from the top skaters in men's ladies and pairs were evident in the free skating.
I don't know how skaters can work on this but it is something that they will need to overcome to reach the next echelon internationally.

Horse manure. Amelia was third in the Juniors and was third after the SP in the Seniors even with her falls and obvious pain. She is rewarded for what she does. Holly won because the automatic base value of the jumps she attempts adds the numbers up much higher than people who aren't rotating triples. Holly also had an otherwise beautiful skate other than the falls and her SP was wonderful too. If you're going to get arsey about it, blame the IJS, not Holly, and not the judges.

The fact is, no-one other than Holly rotated any triples in the Junior Ladies. No-one. Amelia was, IIRC, the only other person than Holly to even rotate double Axels. If you can't look at a base value chart and do basic maths to see how a bunch of rotated triples adds up to more than a rotated 2A, non-rotated triple attempts and a bunch of doubles (even if rather pretty ones!) then I can't help you. Holly lost the massive five points (four falls and the time violation) that the rules demanded. I admire Amelia's skating and think she's got great promise and talent, but at the moment, she just doesn't have the technical difficulty. What you are proposing is that Amelia get Patrick Chan levels of PCS inflation to put her ahead of Holly which is not only beyond ridiculous but would not be a result replicated by an international panel and is absolutely not the direction I would want Australian Nationals to go in.

Last year it was someone else whinging about Charlton and James, this year it's you whinging about Amelia and Holly, and the fact that you cannot seem to grasp that technical content MATTERS is ludicrous.
