Free Dance

Some of what passes for dance now is not dance because it is simply ugly and lacks flow. They were ugly in my opinion. It was about gymnastics and contortions and their program was not beautiful to me in any sense. I hate to compare them to gymnastics because REAL gymnastics is beautiful. For example, when does art become porn? Like most people I know it when I see it and no, I didn't like the music at all.Too bad you don't like my opinion.

I agree -- up to a point. I'm a huge fan of Khoklova & Novitski and like them much better than I do Domnina & Shabalin, but I really do feel they were overscored in the FD. It's been one of my favorite FD's of the season, but on this occasion they were stiff (if one can EVER refer to Ms. Khoklova as "stiff"), on the slow side, and Sergei almost hit the wall. I think it was definitely their weakest performance of the season, and they've gotten lower scores in the past for skating MUCH better. I too think that they were bumped up a bit score-wise to compensate for the absence of D & S. Who, by the way, I did not miss AT ALL.

Well, I'm not a huge fan of K/N, but I do prefer them usually to D/S who I find simply both dull and frantic at the same time. But K/N's FD was.....not good. And they deserved to not do well with it.

I LOVED their lifts — well, most of them. I didn't like the running in the air one. But the others were outstanding due to her flexibility and the innovative positions they can hit because of it. If you've got it, flaunt it. I also liked a couple of their intertwined spiral-type positions, I thought they made nice highlights. The actually DANCE part of it, however, notably the footwork sections, were not top-flight material. These were sloppy and very, very slow compared to the other top teams. They need to work on the dance side of things, or I fear they will not surpass their favoured countrymen. And they did deserve to be placed as far down as they were in the FD.

That's what really bothers me about them (I couldn't care less what country they're from personally). To me this is a great team that's putting way way too much focus on the "tricks" and not enough on "substance" (as in dance elements like the footwork). I will say they had their best performance of the season at Euros- sensational!- but even then I was annoyed by the dance part of the program; it's lacking. And that's why people will cry "conspiracy."

If they do work on that then well then, they will be one of the most well rounded teams in the world. I already much prefer them to D/S.

This judging panel helps me see how Khoklova & Novitski shot up the rankings so quickly.

I googled the Russian judge and her name came up in an article entitled, "The dirt on ice dancing".

This is all I need to know! You can use any judging system you want, but unfortunately, the judging panel seems to be just as important as the actual skating. It makes me sad.

I find it interesting that earlier this season when I started a thread complimenting Khoklova & Novitski, the replies to it were basically pretty negative -- Now, after they did probably their worst FD of the season, all the fans are coming out of the woodwork. Go figure....

I do agree that even at their best, at this point, their basic footwork is pretty sloppy and ragged, but they are fabulous performers and have outstanding highlights -- which is pretty much what most people said about Bestemianova & Bukin in their heyday.

On another note -- was I the only one who thought the whole thing with the Zaretskys was funny?? I am referring to Alexandra and Roman informing the ISU that the proper spelling of their name was ZaretSKY and not ZaretSKI, only to be informed by the ISU that "No, that's not how you spell it, we're gonna spell it with an I". Leave it to the ISU, under their current highly arrogant leadership, to try and tell people how their own names should be spelled.....:sheesh::sheesh:

This was the first time that I ever watched so many dances. I enjoyed almost every one of them starting from the team from AZE(?), beautiful.

Congratulations to all the medalists!

Did the bronze medalist "steal"Z/Z's music and moves (just kidding:) Never know that this piece of music could be skated with so much fun. I usually don't like ice dance with overly dramatic and arificial facial expression, and that was why I didn't watch ice dance that often. But boy, this girl just made it so enjoyable and interesting.

B/A was never my cup of tea but their FD looks nice this time to me.

What!?!

Unless I missed that, I don't think (as I didn't hear anything about this before now) that was mentioned on any of the Canadian coverage this week. Sigh...Just when you think it can't sink any lower, the ISU does just that..

One thing I haven't seen mentioned here yet....

Did you guys catch as V/M were leaving the K&C, Scott call out "Go Tanith and Ben!!"?

Yes, I know they're clubmates and are friends, but we've seen clubmates skate after each other before and nothing like that happen. I thought that was a great thing for Scott to do and very classy as well. :)

The Canadian coverage may not have mentioned it; this was on ESPN on this side of the border. As they were coming out, their name was spelled ZARETSKY and Terry Gannon mentioned why it was now being spelled that way and told the story.

LOL and with that panel they still managed to rank 5TH in the FD even behind the Italians.:rolleye: I bet they even put something on the Ice so Tanith could fall and paidTessa some money to screw her twizzle :rolleye: Ohh the conspiracy!:rolleye:

Well, congratulations you finally found an excuse so you can believe there actually was some evil cheating:agree:

What makes me sad is people who start throwing around conspiracy theories in figure skating politics based on very little understanding of the real politics. I guess you are not aware of the cold relations between the Baltic States (Especially Estonia) and Russia?

 I find it so funny that people can still suggest that there is judging which is pro-Russian when the judges were trying to push up B/A's FD score so that they might be able to medal. In fact, I don't think the judges tried to help K/N at all in the competition..

I don't get how Khokhlova / Novitski ever got on the podium, their free dance was clownish.

Then again, there are a lot of podiums I did not understand in recent years:

Winkler / Lohse? (Really?)
Chait / Sakhnovski (WTH??)
Lobacheva / Averbukh and Fusar-Poli / Margaglio WORLD CHAMPIONS???? (RUKM?)
These last 2 were just SO overrated, it was disgusting.

I do believe that Belbin / Agosto were robbed big time.

It´s so disgusting to read here the stupid conspiracy theories. How could you be so unsporty? Relax and enjoy all good performances without nationalism.

That is true! The relations between Baltic States and Georgia on one side and Russia on the other are very cold. They are far more USA friendly, than Russia friendly.

I did not talk about conspiracy theories, you brought it up. I just said that in ly opinion, Belbin/Agosto were robbed this year, I prefered their OD and their FD over the Russians, especially the FD.

I do not think that conspiracies are theories when the whole judging system has been revamped because of conspiracies. When something has been proven, it is no longer a theory.

I just said I did not understand how Winkler / Lohse and Chait / Sakhnovski ever got on the podium. I mean I really did not see anything special or enjoyable enough about their skating to see them on a World podium.

As far as Lobacheva / Averbukh and Fusar-Poli / Margaglio... Well L/A deserved to be on the podium, but WC, I don't think so.

FP/M? Really, you are defending these guys? Margaglio is the poorest male dancer ever as far as skills are concerned. FP/M should never even have been on the podium at all.

The year they were WC is the lowest point in the history of Ice Dancing.

Can we agree to disagree on this one?

finally got the patience to watch all programs on ESPN.
N/B - good nothing wow-material
Z/Z - i like the music :)
C/L - my new favourites! i love the opening and closing. that illegal hold on a lift...stupid rule. they physically look like V/M-ish right? i'll be watching for this team
P/B- more use of the straight jackets! they need a swiss spin coach haha and as recommended by lambiel, swiss chocolate. (i cant believe i still remember that fluff)
K/N- i love all their lifts and thats it.

D/S - parfait.

F/S - i kinda like the music and their final lift. interesting "butterfly" costumes to support theme
V/M - overrated OR their style just doesn't cut through me, they are fantastic skaters - technically and artistically, but ok....smile on....
B/A - great performance - not a big fan of the hold on the first part of their final combo lift and of course...their smiling
