Hi!

I’m a 28 year old adult skater, been skating for 2 years and a few months. I’m 5’3”, 125 pounds. I have all my single jumps except axel. Currently working on adult silver MITF. I skate around 5-6 days a week, about 8-11 hours a week.

I started out in Jackson Artistes, which I liked, but they broke down shortly after I got my loop jump, about a year after I started skating. I switched to Risport Royal Pros 250C with an MK pro blade and skated in these for about a year. Started having heel pain and developed Haglund’s on my right heel.

I switched 3 months ago to Aura Sky 50s in a 250B which so far I like a lot. Pain is gone, but I do wear a sleeve specific to protect the heel, and I use adhesive callous pads around the bump. The bump and my heels in general are a bit red after skating. My right foot is about a half size smaller than my left, and I have narrow heels.

I’ve seen an ortho and podiatrist, but neither were massively helpful. I’m frequently anxious about making the heel bumps worse (and it’s hard to measure that!?), and wondering if I should consider a custom or semi custom boot instead. I’ve heard of some people having success with narrow heel custom Jackson and Riedells, but also heard some horror stories. Looking for recent experiences!

Thank you!

Hi and welcome. I hate to break it to you, but you should have never been in Jackson Artistes at your height and weight. They're not stiff enough to hold an adult.
What is your foot type? That will help us tell you what boot brands would work best.

Hi! Thank you for your reply!
I have an Egyptian foot! Big toe significantly bigger than my other toes.

With an Egyptian foot you could look at Riedell, and Edea. Aura should be fine as well. If you'd like further suggestions on boots/blades let us know. :)

Thank you! Would you recommend going the custom route with Riedell? Are Jacksons not advisable for an Egyptian foot? I guess now that I'm looking more closely it's closer to a "Mongolian" foot perhaps.

Thank you again!

If your foot is truly Mongolian shaped then that changes the recommendations, because a Mongolian shaped foot is shorter and wider which would require a more broad fitting boot.

The toes are a bit more Mongolian—big toe significantly longer than the others—but overall shape is closer to Egyptian. Fairly narrow overall, especially narrow heels. Thanks for your input!

What did you end up getting? Same issue here with same type foot. My daugter's haglund's bumps are huge and nobody really addresses them. My landing foot is getting bad and it is so frustrating. Deep ankle bends is when I really feeling the pain of a blister forming. Hope you got relief! :)

Howdy! My first skates were very stiff (rating 90) and a full size too large. I believe that this is what contributed to me developing Haglund's bumps over the course of a year. More recently, one of my children developed them after a few months of skating regularly as well. These are an inexpensive, effective solution: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0D9JVM8PX

Take a serious look at your skate fit - it's possible that your boots are too large allowing your foot to move even if you don't notice it. I have had no problems since switching to proper-sized custom skates, despite them having no extra heel padding or other special accommodation.
