Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

I don't think it's bashing as long as you're able to articulate what you appreciate about P/C as opposed to not liking about V/M.

For me, the biggest dissapointment about them not getting the OG is that it somehow feels like a celebration of the same old things in ice dance and failing to acknowledge the way P/C managed to change the sport (for the better) in the past 4 years. I remember seeing them with Pink Floyd as Juniors and with Woodkid in their first year as Seniors and thinking, wow, the French have something very special on their hands. But nothing prepared me for Mozart and how it suddenly was everything I never knew I wanted and needed in ice dance. The way they rise and fall and become the music, the way they always make you forget about the technical elements, the butter smooth quality of their edges, the perfect incorportion of contemporary ballet into their upper body movements, it all makes for a completely different aesthetic than anything seen before in figure skating. And I'm not sure if people realize this, but programs such as what Aliona and Bruno put together in the last two years, or the Shibs finally managing to find a style that works for them, are largely due to the influence P/C and the Montreal camp have had. People suddenly realized, wow, you can actually build a program under the current tech. requirements and still make it look like a composition that actually makes sense. You don't have to play a role and over-emote to have an emotional impact.

V/M on the other hand, while absolute masters of their craft, never felt like Innovators to me. When they announced their come-back, I remember them mentioning they felt like they still had things to show in ice dance. I was pretty excited about it to be honest because while I always admired their skill, they failed to capture my attention in the past and I always blamed it on the programs. But other than perfecting their craft, it doesn't feel like they brought anything new to the table, no other facet to their skating. And in the end, these two new OG medals feel like scoring one over D/W as opposed to being driven by any creative need for expression. This is where Tanith's movie comparison is so astute, there's everything to admire in an excellent block-buster, but it always smarts when the art-piece that actually pushes cinema further fails to win an Oscar against it.

I swear to God, if Didier tries to interfere in any way in their creative process in order to push for crowd-pleasing performances... well, I don't know what I'll do other than rant about it :eeking:

You are right. The friend I was watching it with immediately said that it seemed a vote for the past.

Once again, I am not 100% sure, but "change their style" sounds like "change their coaches", mainly Marie-France Dubreuil, who choreographs their last 4 FDs.

Changing choreographers is perfectly fine, as long as they have a stable place and coaches. They seem happy and hope they will be, no matter where they train. I do believe that Marie-France as a coach, or actually their coaching team, is the best for them, because they look very collected and like the SD showed us, nerves of steel.

Indeed.
You know... Interpreting Didier's remarks is sometimes quite challenging

«Les Canadiens se sont bien vendus, ils ont un style grand public, ils sont très bien habillés aussi, lâche-t-il. L'avenir appartient à Gabriella et Guillaume mais il faut que nous fassions un bilan tous ensemble et il va falloir changer de style pour s'ouvrir davantage au monde.»

It seems Gailhaguet is specifically tackling P/C's personal style. He indeed wants them to be more like V/M and A/P. In short: make us money.

Love the end of the article

"Au sortir du plus beau libre de leur jeune carrière, les intéressés apprécieront..."

He may have forgotten the experience in this case... Don't we all ? I'll say that a million times : 1st Olympic cycle. Some great champions don't have as much titles as they do and did not dominate as fast as they did - and stayed. It's unprecedented.

And let's not forget that the 1st Olympic cycle is totally Gailhaguet's fault when he refused to send P/C at Sochi. I'm not saying it would've changed the results, but some Olympic experience couldn't have hurt that much.

For P/C, it really is about the coaching team, and not just their coaches/choreographers. They seem to be very pleased and they always refer to the team in their interviews. Their mental coach was omnipresent. That warm and long hug between Gaby and the mental coach at the kiss-and-cry tells us much. Marie-France gave Gaby the same kind of hug during their first world championship. I also noticed the same of their physical trainer. In the NBC coverage last night, there were glimpses of the backstage activities. Their physical trainer was right behind them as they were limbering up their bodies. Both mental coach and physical trainer were by the rink watching and clapping during rehearsals. I don't think they'll ever ditch this coaching team at all. It almost seems like a surrogate family for them. So yes, changing choreographers is fine. In fact, they had Christopher Dean and Jeffrey Cirio help them already. But you are right, they do have to have this kind of stable and supportive team that is very much invested on them.

C'est beau... je vais pleurer.
En attendant, ils se sont bien fait niquer.

The moral of these Olympics? Don't underestimate the power of the nipple.

Hahaha yes, get them exposure, they deserve it

I agree and the fact that they just keep getting better and don't stop proves it. It's not just a coincidence that Gadbois is 1,2 and 4 today. It looks on the outside at least, very stable and friendly, rivalry are based on the skating, but they all say (skaters + coaches) that respect is priority and there is no place for negative energy. It's unecessary. Besides, they don't always see each other or train together. It looks well put together.

Indeed, huge power. A bunch of those viewers might have been disappointed though not seeing any nipple in the Euro performance but hey, they discovered P/C in the process.
AliAle, I fully agree with your long post. I never dare speaking out loud about my thoughts on V/M, their style and what they brought with their come back by fear of retaliation and never ending sour discussions. But now they have their 2nd gold, open discussion might be easier.
I'm still amazed at how well the American skaters are responding to P/C. I have said it before but not having been able to follow any NBC coverage, it's good to hear they were spot on once again in their commentaries. Unfortunately, the only English speaking video of their FD was the one from CBC, not what I needed to hear today. Not too bad but still ...

I just found that interview an please somebody tell us what they are saying...i cant understand almost nothing...please:pray:

1st Olympic medal at 22 and 23. Gaby : we're very proud of ourselves, from our performance today to the experience here at the Games. It's a beautiful victory for us.

Did the wardrobe malfunction cost you the gold ? Guillaume : not directly, we could have stayed perfect technically but it was too hard not to think about it. We're not going to remake history, we don't know what would have happenned if the dress stayed on, maybe the scored would have been similar. It happens.

You were perfect tonight/this morning. Tell us about your daily life working your programs. Guillaume : just hundreds of hours of work, we started in June. Everyday 2/3 hours a day, I'll let you do the math.

Gabriella, what do you do from now, gold in 4 years I suppose. What do you do to improve ? Gaby : We're young and have a lot to learn, the level will rise, we'll have to keep up but we have a lot of margin and a lot of passion.

Thank you, your performance was great, you made us dream, blabla the end ;)

Re: the coaching situation. I don't know if anybody has already posted this video, but here you have a sort of reception for the silver medalists by the French Olympic Committee and Federation. Didier at the beginning, then around 11:00 they are joined by their whole coaching team. Well, the body language doesn't seem to say anything negative is going on between M-F and Didier atm, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed they are going to keep working in Montreal. They don't say much, could anyone be so kind and write for us what they are saying?

OMG so funny ! When Romain spoke : "Congratulations to Gaby and Guillaume, and thank you Mr Gailhaget for the support. It's silver, we would have liked gold but in 4 years... with even more money..." and he taps DG's shoulder ! :laugh2: (at about 11:10 min) They all burst out laughing and scream : "Romain ! Romain !"

I'm a bit sad that Gabby & Gui didn't get the gold this time, as it was really close, but I was so very happy that they got to deliver Moonlight Sonata as a real masterpiece on ice. Tessa and Scott were fab too, it was the theatre, while P/C were the symphony. I am hopeful for P/C for the future and to win in 2022! Four years ago they were left at home and not in Sochi, today they nearly won the ultimate prize.

Also, if you follow Guillaume's Insta-story, he and Gabby took a picture of themselves eating giant slices of pizza with the description "the first thing you do after you win an Olympic medal!"

They were magnificent in the free dance. It was a work of art, and I'm so happy for them.

Oh, I understood that he want to market them a bit more to get exposure.

I don't want them to leave Gadbois, well I want them to do what they want. Not being forced to do anything and be free in their creative process, otherwise, medals for medals is clearly "not enough" for them, as Guillaume said. It has been a long time since we had (internationally) skaters with such freedom and I don't want them to lose this identity.

I honestly don't know where else they would go to train. Gadbois owns 3 of the top 4 positions right now at the Games. Marina delivered the bronze, but Igor's teams haven't lived up to expectations. MF & co. are the best right now.
