Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Haha, yeah! Simon Reed is like the only B.ESP commentator who gets it right every time. Mark Hanretty usually does, too, but he's had a few flawed pronunciation instances. Chris Howarth and Nicky Slater are kinda hopeless and make Guillaume's name sound as if he's Welsh.

How do you know that Gwilym is the Welsh version of William? has someone commented before?

I remember looking it up back in 2016, when I was seriously weirded out by Nicky Slater's pronunciation of Guillaume's name at 2016 Worlds, and because I'm not a native English speaker and not at all familiar with certain names in the Anglophone world, I transcribed phonetically what I was hearing and "Gwilym" was the name that came up when I searched through Google. It said in the history of the name that it is indeed the Welsh version of William.

I'm very impressed! Welsh accents are very distinctive: the eurosporters say Gwilym in a very English way (like Gwillem). They are wrongly saying a French name as a Welsh name that is also said wrongly........ But that is how Gwilym is likely to be pronounced in England in general.

Here's the Welsh http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/wales/livinginwales/gwylim.mp3

Thank you for the informative post! :) (Very educational for a student of Anglophone Studies ;) )

I don't think you can lose a level for missing a double twizzle: I think you have to lose two? There was a discussion on it here recently, but I can't remember what the outcome was.........
The discussion was right after they debuted their FD in France, for anybody interested in going back and finding the relevant posts (mostly between me and Snow63 I think).

IIRC: It used to be that missing the double twizzle cost you 2 levels (e.g. when Guillaume had a bobble doing his 2Tw in GPF 2016 SD PSt and P/C got lev2 for that stsq) but now it costs you only 1 level (e.g. when Tessa botched her 2Tw in SkCa 2017 FD CiSt and V/M got lev3 for that stsq).

At least I THINK it went like that. Ice dancing is confusing!

It's exactly like that now. I don't remember which comentator (probably Ben) explained that it was going not going to be level4 for sure, but not necessarily 2 either.
I'm having a hard time following all those changes...

Congratulations to Gabi and Guillaume::love: they are great champions and wonderful dancers, poets. This free program is just sensational, a true masterpiece. Congratulations to them for their performances, their big score:laugh:. It was a wonderful weekend
I loved their reaction (and that of Romain) in the kiss and cry: they are natural, happy, surprised by their record.
and we have the answer to our question (if they went directly to France): they return to Montreal for a week. https://www.la-croix.com/Patinage-artistique-Papadakis-Cizeron-nouvelle-dimension-GP-Chine-2017-11-04-1300889506
I will buy kleenex for Grenoble: I will not resist to their Moonlight Sonata:luv17:

Buy a couple of them! I didn't think fo that when I went to the Euros last year and it was a big mistake  Anyway, enjoy it! And report to us back , please. :)

So surprise of the day : this version https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8c93G7D01LU of the Free dance has already 35K+ views and is #10 trending in France

I was just watching this version and reading the comments. Thanks to my friend google translate, I realized Gaby and Guillaume have quite a lyrical Russian fan club. Some beautiful comments, so I think they are yet again gonna touch many for the third year in a row.
I hope this video keep going viral, they deserve it because some are bitter out there. I frankly don't understand the need to go on an athlete instagram account to throw insults or mean comments. You're entitled to your opinion but no need to hurt people.

Funny how Russian fans have liked them since Mozart. That's awesome since Euros are in Moscow and I bet they're definitely going. Nobody misses a EC in Moscow.
I'm just ignoring all of that now... I did before but since their performances this weekend they don't have anything to prove anymore. People are going to freak out all the time until February. I'm not that much into the rivalry. I'm purely here for the skating. For sure I'd love them to win, and if they do that's awesome and if they don't that's okay too, as long as everyone is treated fairly. I'll leave the fight between the skaters and I'll enjoy the great skating :agree:

That's my strategy as well. It's a good thing, though, that their fans or generally people interested in figure skating expressing their opinions are heard, too. That there's a massive positive feedback, not only hateful comments. I guess it'll take time to fully realise what Gabby and Guillaume accomplished this week. Not that their job's done, they need to go back to work and don't waste time, but breaking WRs and also being the first person/couple to achieve sth is always a tremendous achievement!

Although I've been a fan of figure skating for years, I hardly watched ice dancing. I never understood the technical elements to begin with, and only responded to the artistry. I was primarily turned off by the acrobatic lifts that were put in the program simply for show, ruining the coherence and the art. It was not till I saw P/C with their Mozart program three years ago that I started to pay attention to ice dancing. Everything they do in their programs build up to something coherent and seamless, to what I consider as 'art'. I honestly still do not know anything about the technical elements of ice dancing, so I found it quite informative that someone broke down the technical elements of P/C's current SD on this video. Perhaps this will give me a good start. See video below:

It can take a bit of time to understand fully all the elements of Ice Dancing. And from one year to another, the number of elements required can change. You have more elements today than in 2013-2014 for example (that's why there are more points awarded too). If you want to see it clearly, I'll advise you to watch Meryl&Charlie or Tessa&Scott during the 2010-2014 time, because, it was all about the elements, making them very big, hence the "acrobatic" feeling. Today it's more about blending everything in, and with Gaby&Guillaume it's less easy to define what is where if you're not familiar with the technical (that's why they get a lot of points actually). I can explain a couple of things of course, but I don't want to crush this thread
I'll advise you to have protocols with you as well.

Go ahead and crush it, we could all do with a bit of learning, especially from experienced ice dancer like you (I read that somewhere on this forum, if I'm correct).

I dooo love their programs, especially free! This is just marvellous and simply masterpiece. They have something which VM lack, the beauty of youth, freshness, perfect physique of slender arms and legs... They are just like out of myth. This is the program for the two and show the best match. I can watch it hundreds of times...
