Gabriella Papadakis & Guillaume Cizeron

Whiteboredom and beki you are both very right.

The majority, and I should say something like 99.9% of V/M fans really acknowledge P/C, their skills, etc. I'm a big V/M fan myself ! But those you hear aren't the casual or even big fans, they are the ubers.
When V/M skated lights out last week I was very happy for them, and I thought : "well with those huge scores and all the buzz since they had so much coverage AND their fantastic SD, P/C might not have that chance of gold. It's okay actually, I'm wasn't really disappointed, I'm much more looking for them to have a impact".
However, you could see all the hardwork last weekend. They were having so much fun in the SD and more importantly, they (almost) got all their levels and skated a faultless SD which was the 1st time since TDF last year (and Finlandia Trophy too). Now I heard people say they're overscored, well not if you have your levels 4. Like you said beki, they feel so much comfortable with that SD.

I was expecting the 200 tbh, because they hold the WR in the free. They needed 118.50 after the SD, they could do it. It's hard to ignore the audience reaction at the end. This was a really good FD and technically speaking, they are better than ever. This is just hardwork that paid off.
What I wasn't expecting was the buzz around the 200-mark though. They already reached 160K+ views on YouTube and 2M+ views on facebook (I posted the link in the previous pages).
They do have momentum ever since worlds, it's true. I (weirdly) agree with the TSL guys that even with V/M killer SD, the gap has drastically reduced and man, that Moonlight Sonata is golden. Very suited for an Olympic Audience, moment-inducing.
I'd say the SD is very current, very fresh, I really enjoyed it. I didn't know what to expect with Dean's choreo but I'm not disappointed.

V/M are totally capable of beating those records this weekends, I actually think they will in NHK if they get their levels of course. But just because they're not the 1st to reach 200 means that some people are allowed to become nasty and condescending. Yes, they are awesome, but that doesn't mean someone else isn't too. Ubers would rather point a team's flaws and forget about the hundreds things that make them great. I mean you can't just go with the argument "V/M are better, end of story". NO. Execution matters (Shibs high scores and lack of mistakes will tell you that any day).
Actually, everyone just needs to chill because the scores are going to be nuts all season, and I personally can't wait for the showdown, gold medal or not.

@ Whiteboredom : the D/W vs V/M fanwar was a thousand times worse. Not even comparable.
@ beki : their programs are indeed very suited for the Olympics. The SD music are 2 massive hits and the FD is what they do best.

EDIT : Sorry for the long post !

plus there is a lot of Canadian press that is fostering that feeling in Canada.

I mean if I were Canadian, I wouldn't even think that someone could challenge V/M ever, without even knowing who anybody else is.
I watched their broadcast for Skate Canada. What I admire was how much they supported their athletes. France should take advice from them on some points.
However all I saw was preparation for V/M to have that gold medal (fair enough of course) but almost no other outcome is possible. First, doesn't that add up to the pressure ? And second, you're feeding the ubers if you don't acknowledge your competitors correctly. On the D-Day if something different happens, you won't see how it came to that point. When D/W won, everybody was like : "but V/M skated perfectly, I don't get it" and not just people online but on TV shows where they were invited etc. Since this time, V/M are the world champs and have never been defeated the past season, there is even less talk about the other competitors.
(Disclaimer : I am NOT criticizing Canada or Canadians whatsoever. Just the media coverage with figure skating sometimes. Hi Carol Lane)
Just look at what happened with WeaPo in 2015. I understand if people get angry.

People feel threatened. It's their loss if they can't enjoy a good competition and superior skating.
I think it's gonna be a close battle come Olympics. Having fun and being free is the best mindset for P/C.

The ad bit at the end is cheesy the way sponsor ads always are, but it's great to get such a close look at some of the Moonlight Sonata moves. Maybe they should hire these guys to film the events!

Fully agree. Finding a promotion which is clearly related to Gold was clever.
And yes, this movie combines videos taken by a cameraman inside the rink and videos captured by a spider camera which is close to them. The outcome is really great.
Just for info, the step sequence you can see at the end is from the short dance.

Some hateful fans obviouisly do a disservice to their favorite skaters. I should admit both P/C and V/M have such "fans" who just show how pathetic and desperate they are. It is just needed to look at how skaters are friendly with each other, how they appreciate each other's work and talent. Of course, I am rooting for P/C and I want them to win, maybe I will be a bit disappointed if they don't, but I really like both teams and hope they will do the best they can to turn this OG into the most spectacular show. I think the competition will be much closer this year, and this is exciting.

I'm not sure that Google translate will be of much help, the text is in Russian. But still there is an opinion about Gabriella and Guillaume. The statement in a green block is lovely. https://rsport.ria.ru/blog_rian/20171104/1128232536.html

I try a translation... with Google... and withe an intermediate step in french (sorry :o:).
I hope I have preserved most of the content.

"...A similar duel is observed this season in ice dance. The two-time world champion Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron won the tournament in Beijing and reestablished the status quo: they improved their record on free dance, and, for the first time in the world, crossed the bar of 200 points. There is some suspense as to whether former world record holders, Vancouver Olympic champion Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir will be able to regain control: Papadakis and Cizeron's next step in France, on their soil, as Canadians compete next week in Japan.
Paradoxically, despite the two victories of the French duo at the world championships, there are many people who are not at all ready to recognize the pair as unique. "Do not go" and "skate on two legs" - this is perhaps the sweetest thing you can hear about your partner, even after performances as beautiful as that of Beijing. Is it true?
At one point, I remember talking about this subject with an exceptional dancer Ilya Averbukh. He frankly admitted that in the world of figure skating, it was always accepted to take into account negative evaluations and opinions, at least once expressed in the press or on television. He said, say, to a commentator that an athlete does not slide well enough or skips jumps, the next day all those who are not lazy start to pass it by word of mouth. Tags are attached, which is very difficult to get rid of.
Public criticism of one of the ice dance partners is not uncommon: such criticism has even been expressed to the current President of the Russian Figure Skating Federation and first Olympic Dance Champion Alexander Gorshkov - the skater was accused of penalizing his incredibly bright partner Ludmila Pakhomova. In the following years, Jane Torvill, Gwendal Peizerat, Roman Kostomarov, Meryl Davis became dancers of all sorts of derogatory remarks. All, I note, in different years, have won the Olympics, so this fact alone makes us think: is it really dramatic when one of the dancers is less brilliant or talented than the other?
Besides, everything is in order for a long time. Although the opinion of some of Papadakis skating is not very good, it is only one of the five categories of the component evaluation.
Papadakis is talented, in my opinion, in her incredible ability to feel her partner. Put Gaby back on Guillaume, tie her eyes, turn on the music and I'm sure she'll start moving in time, repeating every move, every move in every detail. If you believe in the reincarnation of souls, I usually assume that in a past life this amazing Greco-French was a graceful lizard, able to fuse with any object, barely touching it.
Thus, the paradoxical effect does not disappear : for the third season, the French skate in the same style, and the world looks at them with a resounding breath. I'll say more : a good half of the audience right now does not care what skaters do with their feet.

Jane Torvill, Gwendal Peizerat, Roman Kostomarov, Meryl Davis became dancers of all sorts of derogatory remarks. [/I]

...Enough said. :palmf:

I always find it intriguing when people criticize Gabriella for her skating. I really do. I mean it's not 2012 anymore. Her edges are freaking huge (P/C's Cist are goals all the time), her lines, awesome, and I'm not talking about the upper-body and arm movements because it's obvious (it's like liquid flowing in the FD).
I think people make a statement and those who are happy with it stick with it (and that's why a lot of people criticize the scores but time to move on).
Before 2014-2015 I wasn't going on the forums. So all that talk about Meryl being less talented than Charlie here just surprised me so much. How ? If it was the case it never showed. And if it ever showed I believe it's not true. You can't just "hide" it for 7 seasons in Seniors. Or twizzle like she did.

Did they ever say if they're planning to keep competing or not after the Olympics? I would love it if they did.

I believe they say they intend to in a written interview. Can't remember which one though. After all they're only 22 which is very young in ice dance.

I always love to see skaters super-focused just before the program, as they were and Evgenia, for instance, often is.

They were already moving as one before they started:luv17:

I can't remember what exactly I read or where, but I think they said that they do..... It wasn't completely definite but more that they are enjoying what they do and they haven't finished exploring yet so there is no reason for them not to continue........ Gabriella has also definitely mentioned that the average age of retirement for a female ice dance is about 27 ,so that would take them through to the next Olympics. I think we'll get at least two more years. They'll also get to cut loose next year in terms of ideas and choreography; and I think that will be an incentive for them to continue. If they get gold, they may think that they have ticked that box and can now retire; but they may also think that they have ticked that box and don't need for the next four years to be addressed to going for gold at the next olympic, so can do more what they want. In terms of writing out eight year plan back in 2015, I also don't think they would have had winning World golds in either of the years that they have written down as a goal; so in terms of their vision of themselves in the sport, they are probably very much ahead of any "schedule"; and will have planned for their career to extend beyond this Olympics, anyhow.

Yes, Gabriella and Guillaume will continue after the WG2018. This is clear. Their next goal will be the WG2022 in Beijing.
