Georgia maths book whips up storm
I saw this article and just had to share it.

Georgia (the one in the Caucuses, not in the US) is famous for a great sense of humor. Kudos to the educators trying to bring some of it into the classroom!

I think the idea is absolutely great. Math is hardly ever a favourite subject with children, and if this method will make students have fun while learning that hard and boring subject, I say go for it.

Kudos to the authors who cerated the book, and to the teachers who are using it in the classrooms.

Dasha :agree:

This is too funny!

Anything to make math more interesting and entertaining is a good thing I think.

I find the comment about "degrading to politicians" very funny. Maybe the politicians in question should behave better, and they wouldn't have this problem. :)

This is just TOO funny!!

Thank you so much for posting this; I needed a good laugh today! :agree:

I don't really see anything wrong with a little originality and humor as long as the content is still the primary focus and doesn't take on a secondary role. I'm not too fond of the drunken father bit, though. That may well be something some children have to deal with, but not all kids have drunken fathers (lol..well, maybe in Georgia they do) and I find that a little excessive and unnecessary. The rest sounds perfectly fine.

Brozeis, I do agree, but I don't think it means a "mean drunk father". A "drunk man" in Georgian culture is rather a man who has had a few drinks, and is in a good jovial mood. Georgia is not known for alcoholism problem; they tend to drink a lot of semi-dry red wine. A man who cannot hold a drink is really looked down upon.

What I'm trying to figure out is what kind of math problem you would use involving the drunk father. Something involving specific blood alcohol level? "If Vakhtang comes stumbling into the house at 2 AM and bumps into 4 pieces of furniture in the living room, 3 in the hallway, and 3 in the bedroom before passing out, how many pieces of furniture has he bumped into?"

(I apologize in advance to anyone who may be offended by that; I understand some may find this to be a rather shaky area. I apologize to the Murvanidze fans as well :) )
