Goodness, Mao's exhibition program this year makes me melt. It is gorgeous as anything I've ever seen on ice. I think she's revamped it a bit this time, with the extra jumps and all, but I think it works really well.
At the same time, I don't think any of the other ladies in the field could pull off No Doubt...I personally wish that Yu-Na would bring back "Once Upon A Dream" at some point, but this program is a lot of fun.

You mean Just a Girl - music Yuna skated to? What do you mean by No Doubt?

Is it just me or does Yuna look like she's put on some weight since CoC exhibition? She looked very slim at CoC (which I liked) but now I notice that her pants are tighter and she looks like she's had a serving of Korean BBQ before she came on the show. Yu-na has such a delicate fine-boned frame that even if she were to gain three pounds it's noticeable.

ESPN360 showed the gala live this morning at 10:00 am est. Unfortunately they are not repeating it, instead repeating the men's and ladies' short programs , one of the dance programs ( not sure which) and whatever little of the men's free skate they broadcasted before losing the feed.
Oh good. Well, that's what I get for not checking the time zone. I've watched plenty of European events before and I should've known ... Anyway, I thought the video feed for the short programs were good (when I wasn't greened out due to congestion) and hopefully the cable version will be even better. I'm just happy Caroline skated in the gala.

As for Caroline looking older, she is older and bigger. Here's her JGPF exhibition from last year:

Her arabesque spiral is bigger. Her ending biellman is oh so high. What I don't like is that Caroline is sacrificing some of her elegance at the CoP altar. But that's okay. Even if she feeds the CoP monster more and more for a 3Lo combo or a 3A, she's got plenty to spare and she'll get it all back and then some. What I do like is that I'm seeing more facial expressions than ever before  (no doubt partly because there are more slowmo close-ups ;)). The lack of that sparkling personality cost her at least 6 points at the Cup of China, IMO.

Here is Sasha's God Bless America exhibition that was referred to:

Sasha's split jump is unreal  and yet I can imagine Caroline doing that in a few years time.

I must forewarn all of you here who have any language sensitivity at all: DO NOT read the comments section under the Yu-Na Kim LP video. The comments against Kim are riddled with profanity and then the comments defending her are extremely anti-Japanese. Tell me, do Koreans and Japanese really hate each other, or are we seeing on youtube mostly Kim FANS against Mao FANS, whether of their respective countries or not? I'm 66, and I suppose I come from a naive generation, but this kind of hatred-mongering language is disheartening to see from people who presumably are fans of figure skating.:frown:

I certainly wouldn't expect to EVER see that kind language on a kind, gentle, innocent website like here at Goldenskate - Now, would I? ;)

I LOVE Caroline's exhibition skate.

She somehow looks so grown up with the ponytail and red dress. And she really moves with such grace and confidence - she seems to loosen up and express much more in exhibitions. I hope she can tap into that freedom in her future LP skates (she's much more expressive in her SPs).

The bearing, carriage and elegance - ah, there really is no one quite like her.

I agree, she is wonderful. We are so lucky to have such a field of talented ladies competing. No favorites for me I love them all.

I really love Caroline's exhibition, too. She looks like her age finally! She looks like she's really enjoying skating, interpreting the music, and charming the audience (haha, I'm charmed anyway), instead of worrying about the jumps, the number of revolutions in each position, etc. And red looks great on her!

I know that exhibitions are intrinsically different from competitions, but I do think that she can benefit from competitive program choices that show more of her "sparkling personality" -- as someone said previously. The flamenco SP worked pretty well for her. My boyfriend saw both her LP and exhibition, and he said, "Wow, is this the same girl? But she's GOOD! She's PRETTY. And she's skating with SPEED!"

Thanks for the links. The seats were packed for the gala and the skaters all looked so happy. Did Kimmie do an Exhibition Skate? Did I miss it?

The original video posted for Caroline Z's exhibition was desynchronized for sound (audio behind video).

For a more properly sync'ed one, try this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=23_OEwFVpvA

I was wondering how come she started moving before the music, and how come she ended so long before music. :p The COE spiral and the ina bauer both look much better now -- right to some highlights in the music.

don't think so, think it was just the top 5.

I didn't realize it was the top 5. That's rough. So it penalizes the last-place finisher rather than rewarding the top however many, or at least that's going to be how it's going to feel like to that 6th person. :frown:

it's the top 5? I thought it was the top 4.

Well, Kim gets to go home a little earlier. ;)

Me too. Thank you, that is much better. I enjoy both Mao and YuNa's skating immensley but for me there is something special about Caroline.
