I was always incredibly confused, but now I get it! Nebelhorn Trophy 2003 was the first event under IJS, so it would make sense that the first total score ( and SP and FS) in that competition would be a "record" and that every competitior that scored above that pair/skater would be a progression of a "record."
Also makes sense with JGP scores could be records since they are earlier in the season, but quickly broken by a senior score later in the season.
