Holiday Prep and celebrations

what is your favourite holiday piece ?

“The Song About Five Minutes”

(and it’s amazing to see it in HD!)

New England Christmas traditions are fairly well known, and therefore boring. You might not know that oyster stew is traditional for Christmas Eve, but otherwise any Hallmark movie will tell you all about it. Tree. Wreath. Stockings. Fruitcake. Cookies. Eggnog. Carolling.

But when we were first married, we lived in Kodiak, Alaska. There was a large Russian Orthodox community, mostly Aleutiq, there which dated back to when Alaska was part of Russia. Their Christmas tradition of "starring" is described in the link below. I never saw two starring groups meet out carolling, and then engage in carolling wars, but the Idea intrigues me!

Valdez is on the mainland, but the tradition is the same.

Twelve Days of Shetland Christmas - Day 6: Trip to the Original Cake Fridge and Teahouse (as seen in the Shetland TV series!)
Travelers help themselves to the treat and/or the craft they want and leave payment in the Honesty Box….

I have no idea how the BBC found out about it since Stonington is just a small seaside town in CT with a population of about 20,000.

If you are near enough, it is worth visiting. There is a door into the tree and you can see how this looks, all lit up, from the inside, too!

Stonington is famous!!
Will check if it will be available to visit in January when nephew, his wife and baby will visit .. Baby Thea will love the lights! Sister and I may go at Christmas although it depends on my BIL if he can spare her for an afternoon. Thank you for sharing the stories; wonder if it is near Noah’s where my older nephew, a chef, used to bake bread in the wee hours to sell to early morning customers..
A fond memory..
Just read it will be up til January 15…

I'm always the admirer of those with festive spirit regarding decorating and just celebrating holiday season basically staring 1st December.
It was sort of never a tradition inside my household, so I'm not very fond myself of such things, but I'm always smiling seeing decorated houses, lighting displays on porches etc.
As for my Christmas prep...it's kind of complicated this year. For the first time ever, mom will be abroad (work) while me and my younger sister will be together. And I'm already in my feelings just typing this. Come 24th, I will be a crying mess. We already ordered part of food I certainly won't be able to prepare by myself (my sister is not much of a cook or baker help and I simply refuse to get overdone by myself regarding preparations...), but there will be few dishes and sweet things I plan to make by myself.
I guess we will buy a small tree, some lights, festive tablecloth and...we will try to feel happy, despite mom not being with us in flesh.
Christmas or holidays are all about being with those 2 people for me, not much about festivities and whole package. And about calm, unhurried spending of this time (which is a nice and welcomed change comparing to how Christmases looked like before 2013 for me, being rather a fake pageantry of happy family cosplay, ending with tears getting into the borscht :)). As this year mom is not around, everything sort of hits me harder. Plus the older I get, the more emotional I am becoming over holidays.

Yesterday was our holiday luncheon at work, and all of the cookies were done and put out for dessert.

On the left are Italian Christmas Cookies. On the right are Chocolate Chip, with milk, dark, and white chips.

You can click the images to make them bigger.
