I just got home from SOI and if the crowd there is any representation of interest in figure skating than I think we're moving in the right direction. I've been to 20+ SOIs over the years and I have never seen that large of a crowd. The only seats left were up in the nosebleeds and I do MEAN way up. Also, if this makes sense, I could tell there were a lot of people who weren't figure skating followers by the things they clapped for. Ilia did 2 quads and got good applause but the crowd went crazy when he did a backflip. Both Ilia and Alysa got loooooooooong standing ovations and the crowd in general was very supportive of all the skaters. It was one of the better shows I've seen in a long time.

But this anecdotally of course is what I was hoping for (*hoping*, not predicting). Yes, other skaters are wonderful, but we need to be honest, Alysa is responsible for the sold out SOI. People come because of the buzz. They watch other skaters and love them too and want to watch more skating.

Alysa Liu Never Wanted to Be Famous
After winning gold at the Winter Olympics, the figure skating champ is taking her star power beyond the rink.
For a number of reasons, Alysa is a very special skater. I also saw SOI and the level of enthusiasm was off the charts. She exudes a glow and radiance that is more noticeable live, and more than I have seen in anyone else. There were girls dressed like her and wearing Alysa wigs, which I didn't know was a thing!
Ilia got a similar response when he skated, but he worked for it and did more tricks (multiple backflips, more solo bits). Not that Alysa doesn't want to please her fans, but she seemed almost nonchalant and not seeking it out as much. Who knows whether it will last, but it is certainly bringing in new fans and helping the sport as a whole.

I guess it all depends on your frame of reference. I've seen Alysa "live" twice this year and I wouldn't call her nonchalant. I think she is just who she is and is unapologetic about it. Said differently, she's her own person and you can like her or not like her. She's gone on record as saying she doesn't skate for medals - she skates to show what she can do and because she loves figure skating. Personally I think that's a very healthy attitude toward a sport that can be mind-bending in it's seriousness. So far I think she (and Ilia to some extent) have brought more people to the sport than anyone else in a very long time.

One thing that has impressed me about Alysa in this year's SOI, and that shows what taking charge and taking a break can do:
Alysa was not a highlight of the 2022 SOI. I am not hating on her, she didn't want to be there, and it showed. Her skates looked perfunctory. Now she wants to be there. And she appears to be enjoying herself on and off the ice.

I didn't mean for the word nonchalant to be a negative. I agree that Alysa has a very refreshing attitude about skating and winning. She obviously works very hard and wants to do well, but she has found some perspective about it and also balance to her life.
At SOI, she seemed to be very pleased with the crowd's rousing reaction but not desperate for it. I hadn't seen her live before and was struck with how much she connected with the crowd. She was so genuine and effervescent!
Someone has probably addressed it in this thread, but she crossed the threshold from being a famous figure skater into a cultural icon. She has so many options for other career choices, but I hope that she sticks around for a while and that there are more successful tours.
