I started skating again a little over three months ago, and while a lot came back quickly, the lutz (which used to be my favorite jump) did not. I'd set it up but then either chicken out or do a half lutz. The rare times I would try it I'd fall. I think it was all mental but I just couldn't do it. Meanwhile my oldest son who started skating at the same time is already working on lutzes and while he's technically changing to a flat or the wrong edge at the last minute based on the tracings, it's really close and not an egregious flutz. He doesn't jump very high or far yet, but can rotate a lot more quickly than I can. I expect my children to outpace me thanks to being younger, but it's annoying when it's something I used to be able to do well.
For a couple different reasons, I haven't skated very much for the past couple weeks, allowing my body and mind a break. Apparently that helped, because this morning I went and after a couple more basic jumps, I felt like trying a lutz, and it came easily. Then I did a few more, and I could do them every time. Tracings looked good. I was really happy about this, so just wanted to share. Sometimes getting demotivated and taking a little break can be a blessing in disguise.
