Hi everyone! I've been landing my flip consistently now, so that means it's time to do it with more speed... eek! What are some good patterns to gain speed into the jump? I prefer the outside 3 entry, but open to ideas with either that or the mohawk. (Yes I have asked my coach, but its good to practice with variety :P)

I don't know how much advice you'll get here, because you won't find too many actual skaters on GS, mainly populated by fans of the sport. But some of us are skaters ourselves as well.

I'm not fond of the flip. I tend to lean too far to the inside and then too much weight goes onto my pick. To avoid this, I usually do a back LOI change of edge and jump quickly while the inside edge is still relatively shallow. I might fancy it up by making that a spread eagle from outside to inside and then pick up my leading right foot, swivelling it in order to use the pick, if you follow that . Powering the edge change seems to be what gains speed, although I have to say I never really thought about that :scratch2:. The speed just seems to pick up of its own accord.

Do what feels best to start with :)

Outside 3 is good. Mohawk entry is easier with high speed, but make sure you get deep enough edges when doing Flip from the mohawk, as it's easy to go too straight into it (and not get a proper inside edge/curve). Same thing with the outside 3 of course: Don't rush the jump, you need a good inside edge and a curve for a proper Flip.

Back power 3 turn (Rittberger step) into the mohawk is another, perhaps rather advanced option, but it helps with timing and getting those proper edges for the rotation, compared to going straight from forward skating into a mohawk, imo. It's a cool entry for Toe Loop as well.

And if you can do a spread eagle, that's a really good entrance for spicing up that outside 3 entry with stronger edges (Malin often does his quad from it). Spread eagle is also really good going into Axel.

My 2 cents anyway, good luck!

Edit: Oh, and if you just want to build some courage getting speed on the Flip entrance, then split jumps are your friend, regardless of which entrance you go for! Obviously you don't need to go crazy with the split, the idea just being that you get comfy with that faster speed in the entrance, with half a rotation and landing forward, so you feel safer.

To distract my over-thinking brain when I learned double flips, I did a right inside-edge Ina Bauer into a right forward inside three-turn, crossed my left foot over the right, then picked for the flip. Hopefully that makes sense (my left leg basically did the bauer then slid into a crossover without really coming off the ice when my right foot turned). Flips and loops were my favorite two jumps.

I must try that one 🤔. Anything where I don't sit on the LBI edge long enough for it to lean too deep. (My Lutz is better than my flip. I'd always rather jump off an outside edge in any direction. My Salchows aren't great either, even though they're supposed to be the easiest jump. This entry might work for that too.)
