I think the COP system has worked remarkably well over the grand prix series and I wish nationals was going to use it. I think it's really hard on the skaters to switch back and forth. Watching the Grand Prix I have seen how programs this year have been taylored to this new judging system - very different from the 6.0 system where in-betweens get a lot less respect and jumps are really paramount. One of the things I like best about COP is how it seems to be bringing back the well-rounded program, but I digress. I think COP is around to stay and I think as many skaters as possible should be exposed to it and nationals is the perfect forum to begin this learning curve. I actually think as soon as they saw how well it was going they should have changed the format of worlds to COP as well. At this point, the 6.0 nationals will seem like something of a throwback. Just my two cents. What does everyone else think?

I'm starting to feel the same way... while I love seeing 6.0... and I kinda understand that system more... I really really really like the fact that the COP is a well-rounded way of judging

The old 6.0 system favoured the technical side of skating. That's why it worked well with figures - which were once the main stay of figure skating. The jumps became another crucial aspect of skating especially when figures were eliminated. It's not that the "in-betweens get less respect" they just get less attention because the judges are focussing on the jumps. How disapointing to read .. I wasn't aware that they were using the old system at Nationals. I like the new system, just as I was getting use to it. With the way the new system works, the skaters are credited for what we see on the ice based on elements etc.... And from the results this past season during the Grand Prix, I think its done a good job!
I agree--I think the CoP, while being a little difficult to understand at first, is very beneficial and better rewards the skater with the "total package". It's nice to see that attention to detail, musicality, artistry, and spins get more weight. I'm disappointed they're not using this system for worlds, and I hope the fact that they're using the old system doesn't change the chances of some skaters placing higher. Oh well, I guess we'll see.

I am not convinced the judges at Nationals can see the artistic mark and frankly given the failure of referees over the last ten years to call out judges for poor performance...what will change in the new system ?
The rot was not in the judging guidelines it was and continues because no one wants to id that panels by and large fail to mark the artistic elements correctly....the numeric values dont add up when you compare ranges....
ask why a techical spread in a competion of 3.0 to 4.8 and and artistic spread of 3.8 to 4.4.....it makes no sense.
Will it change ?
How can it ?
The same players are on the judging chairs the same lack referee performance will occur.
Panels get it wrong far far to often, not in the winner perhaps but surly in the top ten the errors become clear.
Dont hold out hope.
